We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It includes every feature that a traditional SAN offers and so much more.""Immediately we noticed huge performance gains, even on older hardware and once we implemented a 10GB link between both servers, the sync was near-instant after the initial sync was complete.""StarWind vSAN was very easy to integrate into our system and ran flawlessly during our entire use time.""A typical system administrator with minimal experience in Hyper-V, VMware, or Windows can do VSAN configuration and maintain VSAN operations.""The price was right.""Having the ability to scale horizontally if needed is a huge plus for future growth.""When using new (warranty) servers, you can forget about the storage service for several years. The users will not even notice the failure of two servers out of three.""The StarWind VSAN is always up and allows us to move VMS to other nodes for maintenance, without interruption to service."

"HPE Nimble Storage dHCI is stable.""Nimble Storage is a capable platform with high availability.""Nimble DHCI is really user friendly and not complex""We have the ability to increase the storage without any additional costs.""The solution is useful for taking storage snapshots, has high performance, and the CASL architecture is good for optimizing workloads.""It is easier to manage compared to the other vendors.""So far, the solution's performance is very good.""Very good in-line compression."

"Stability is one of the things we absolutely have to have, because if the HCI is down, our assembly lines are down, and that could potentially lead to our customer being down. If our customer is down, that's $10,000 a minute; and any time the assembly line is down, that could potentially lead to overtime. We don't get to charge one and a half times for something we billed just because you happened to build it on overtime. Any technology we bring in, has to be built for what I call "three in the morning." It can't be built for whenever everybody's in the plant, everybody can watch it, and everybody can babysit. It has to be built for three a.m. when you've got a skeletal staff there, and you just have to know that it's just running. As I stand here, right now, I don't have to check my phone, I don't have to check my email. I know it's running. Period""It is scalable, and NetApp Deployment Engine (NDE) makes its deployment easier.""The most valuable feature is the software design storage that really provided a faster, agile, easier to scale up and out storage path.""Our goal with NetApp HCI is to have no single point of failure.""It allows me to move a VM set and require extra performance. I can easily move them onto it and have it just run.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the SolidFire interface.""The most valuables features of it are the deduplication and the compaction because the ratios are much better than what we normally get on our FAS storage.""We like SnapMirror and we've been using it for many years. We also like the object storage tools, as well as cloud sync for customers wanting to integrate between the cloud and local."

Cons
"It would be great if it provided thin provisioned virtual disks.""This solution should be more self-sufficient, running without creating domains or failover clusters.""The only point they should improve is the amount of documentation available for the user, especially in the first preliminary phase in which we were testing the product on our own.""StarWind Virtual SAN architecture is slightly complex and requires the team to carefully identify and study how the solution integrates with VMware vSphere.""A mobile app to sync up for overview and status would really be helpful.""It would be great to have more automated tooling around managing the iSCSI connections in Windows""For someone entering the IT sector with little knowledge of storage, iSCSI, and virtual disks, they might not find the GUI immediately obvious.""The system performs as expected, but we're always looking for performance improvements regarding the best utilization of NVMe disks."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"I'm not sure if there are features lacking.""The product does not support file services.""Software upgrade is still more complicated than the competitors, so that's an area of improvement.""Cost-wise, this solution is slightly more expensive than other hyperconverged solutions.""Sometimes the technical support would get back to us in two hours, but other times it would take them two or even three days to respond.""The only issue I'm really running into is we have a SQL server that we're having a lot of high IO latency on one of my drives and it's my data drive from my SQL server. It's not really giving me any good information as to where that latency is coming from, so that's what I'm trying to track down and troubleshoot.""This year 2022, we have the possibility to include new kinds of storage with a high disk availability, such as Alletra 6000 and Alletra 9000. Those are the new storage available. If we would like to improve the quality and the capability and the high availability of these products, we can choose between different costs. This is another benefit from this HPE Nimble Storage dHCI solution of hyper-converged.""HPE Nimble Storage dHCI's website does not open properly or work consistently."

More HPE Alletra dHCI Cons →

"It is easy to install now, but could potentially be even simpler.""My biggest pain point is the installation part. I would like to see the appliance itself remove the entire switch that goes behind it and figure out how to do all the cluster interconnects within the box itself.""It would be great if they took something like kernel storage and integrated straight into the NetApp as well.""I'm not a fan of how they don't log you out properly from some of their web tools for management.""I would like for them to fall a little closer to like the VMware release model. The new features and new solutions tend to come from the VMware side. I would like for NetApp to follow along closely with VMware's release schedule.""At the moment, I am not looking for new features. Quality of Service (QoS) and capacity efficiency are the two things that I want to resolve in my customer's environment. QoS improves the performance of each tenancy, and with capacity efficiency, the customer can achieve more capacity as compared to the normal capacity.""The vCenter keeps crashing, meaning that there is no stability in our environment.""I'd like to see some additional graphics capabilities because I'd like to look at some virtual desktop integration for CAD software."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "I think it's priced right and it's extremely intelligent."
  • "The customers have found the solution to be expensive. However, when compared to the competition the price is reasonable."
  • "The cost of the licensing is reasonable."
  • "The price of HPE Nimble Storage dHCI is expensive."
  • "HPE Nimble Storage dHCI is much cheaper than the competition and has value proposition. Customers can see an ROI in three months. There are no additional costs, and VMware licenses can be reutilized."
  • "With the features that HPE Nimble Storage dHCI provides, I cannot say its pricing is more."
  • "The product is very affordable."
  • "I would rate the licensing model a three out of ten, where one is extremely expensive, and ten is cheap."
  • More HPE Alletra dHCI Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "This solution saved our organization time (35 percent) and money. We have a hefty group of developers, and if you multiply that by 30 to 35 percent, that is quite a bit of money."
  • "Where we lost nearly 75 percent of our infrastructure due to a malicious attack and were able to recover two and a half hours into it due to the integration, it saved us and all of our customers. Because we were able to recover so fast from the attack, the solution paid for itself right there."
  • "There are the overall infrastructure costs. Even though the initial costing was higher, we calculated for year-to-year for five years. That brought us into a position where we decided, we have to go for HCI rather than having distributor systems."
  • "All the licenses are included when you buy the program."
  • "You still have to pay for the licensing for VMware and Red Hat licenses separately. It's not all inclusive at this point."
  • "This solution reduced our maintenance costs. We were going to have to pay one to two million dollars to put in compute nodes. We are avoiding those costs."
  • "Licenses run on a yearly basis, and there aren't any additional fees other than the standard licensing fee."
  • "The licensing fees are renewed annually."
