Quotes From Members Comparing New Relic APM vs. Oracle Enterprise Manager

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
We are able to drill down and see what is going on in the system. It has given us better insight into the performance of the system. It has in-depth analysis using developer code for someone whose not traditionally a developer. It gives insights to non-technical people about what technical issues are most important, how much it impacts customers, and potentially, where we should be targeting our development teams when they have time.Sometimes, I monitor the user's time of response and use this information to improve the number of servers on the back-end. Or, I can use it to change my back log for front-end developers and improve their response times. It's very important in this case because I can improve the experience of the final user.It has helped us maintain a much higher uptime than we had previously.Server uptime is its most valuable feature. It is a one stop shop and integrated with PagerDuty seamlessly. The solution is pretty self-contained.

I have found the singular GUI feature very helpful. Fewer DBA resources can be allocated with Toad licenses.Oracle Enterprise Manager has eased the responsibilities among our DBAs. We can now assign individual tasks to separate DBAs.SQL Tuning Advisor, ADDM, Top Activity, ASM Space Manager, Incident NotificationsWith ASH Analytics, ADDM, Real-Time SQL Monitoring, SQL Tuning Advisor, we can measure SLAs, detect performance hotspots, perform deep diagnostics into specific tiers, tune applications, and remediate. It can also help with capacity planning, sizing, and maximizing overall performance in a large scale environment. This solution allows us to quickly drill down when there are issues. We use it extensively for performance tuning testing, monitoring, and configuration. The 13cR2 updates to the OEM family, strongly integrate Cloud (off-site, hybrid and on-premise) services providing a seamless way to see all of your resources regardless of where they are deployed.

Cons
The price needs improvement. They could improve the education process and how people understand that these tools are very technical. Right now, if someone was to pick it up from day one, it is a very steep learning curve. The monitoring is only as good as the alerts that it produces. By having it set up fine grain alerting, it is a bit of a pain.We have had issues with our agents going offline. We would like to receive more AWS-specific details from the New Relic Dashboard, like EC2 health. In addition, its difficult to have a predictive tool to see how the application would behave in the future when it basically only shows the historical data.

They should improve the hover text context. This would provide assistance whenever a task is attempted by a DBA.Patching. It's extremely difficult to determine what requires patching and the process to patch each component is slightly different. The product is pretty comprehensive, but quite resource hungry. This might be due to the majority of the application seemingly being written in Java.Better mobile access would be useful.Reporting and statistical charting is largely still left up the end-user to develop custom solutions.I would say mostly backup and recovery, through the Enterprise Manager. Or any corruptions, to be able to fix them through Enterprise Manager.I feel more dashboards can be added, especially those useful to higher levels of IT management.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The pricing and licensing are too high. They gave us aggressive discounts when they were brought in for the first time, but they have also kept them for the year-on-year renewals, which has been absolutely fine. The pricing and licensing are good if you have an account manager and a partner manager who are looking to help out.I recommend using the free version of New Relic. If you like the free version and understand its importance for your company, you can move to the trial. Then, you can migrate to the paid version. There is a picture which goes to your browser and it monitors requests from other users. However, it's impossible to use now because the price is very high. The feature is very nice, but I tried it during the trial period, and the current price makes it impossible to use.If it’s the right tool, it doesn’t matter what it costs because you’re going to get it back many-fold from your productivity.

There are a few bugs with the software which require opening SRs with Oracle Support which contribute to the day-to-day cost. Perhaps 8 hours per month is spent dealing with support, just as a rough guess. The basic functions are free. You only pay license fees for advanced features.Evaluate your requirements carefully. Elaborate DR and HA setup of OEM can become expensive.Be careful to only enable the packs for which you have a license as this is an issue we see time and again.Based upon 3 days of implementation by a single person, plus licensing costs would be approximately $60,000, including the virtualized hosts. As with all Oracle products, care should be taken when using any features to ensure that they do not activate licensed features that have not been paid for.It is part of Real Application Testing, so no new investment is necessary for clients who already are already using RAT.
