Researched Tintri VMstore but chose Nimble Storage: Increases reliability, flexibility, availability and reduces administrative time
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
InfoSight - analytics sight that collects data for all Nimble arrays deployed
We get storage access without the need for more human monitoring of those resources.
Not only is it high performing, but it is also more compact and fits better in our storage arrays than equipment from other storage providers.
This solution has given us reliability that is evident by the fact that it has been running for five years with virtually no hiccups.
I really like the form factor, which is nice and compact and small.
The solution's uptime is fantastic. It's 100 percent. In addition, Nimble's storage capacity efficiency is very effective.
The all-flash positions our organization for growth. It is much easier to use, and we do not have to worry about the I/O profile of the workloads that we putting on the array.
InfoSight has helped us resolved an issue where the snapshots were growing too big.
The most valuable aspect of the solution was how fast it worked on behalf of VDI desktops.
It’s very good at IOPS.
It is fast and reliable. There hasn’t been a single failure in three years of use.
The Deduplication feature in VDI environments. If Tintri says we can host 3000 VMs in our storage, I know we can host 3000 VMs there. Believe the results.
A very good support team that is available 24/7. They have real technical staff with strong knowledge.
Web GUI for maintenance and resource monitoring purposes is easy to use.
Upgrades are super easy and can be done during business hours without interruptions in production.
Its speed has been absolutely fantastic.
We have had some stability issues with one array which has happened twice during subsequent software updates but is due to a bad Postgres database.
The large hardware components may be difficult to fit into some standard racks.
I would like to see more advanced analytics in the next release of this solution.
An area that needs improvement is extending the life of the device after five years.
I would like to see greater integration with Microsoft's Hyper-V platform.
The way the market is going, supporting NVMe storage would be useful as a step up.
I don't think it is officially released yet, but the main reason that we chose Nimble is because of the sync rep feature. So, I would like to see that further evolve. This feature will be essential for our setups.
I would like to see more integrations.
Technical support is an area where we had several issues, and it was hard to get some support in a specific case we had. I'm not very satisfied with them.
I would like it to have the ability to store data other than virtual machines. At the moment, you can only connect VMs to it, and that’s a bit disappointing.
In sync and automated mirror between two Tintris is missing.
I would love more insight into each virtual machine statistic.
The Tintri Analytics site is excellent for long-term trending, but more data would be great.
The product could be improved by adding iSCSI support. We have had to rethink how we implement some of our services due to this.
Pricing and Cost Advice
We paid about $80,000 for our permanent site licence.
There are no licensing costs for this solution.
We buy the arrays outright, so we don't pay anything on an ongoing monthly basis for licensing.
Our hybrid solution could do with some more competitive pricing and more scaled-down deployments. Already, the smallest one is too much for us. We would flourish by having a smaller unit.
If you don't go cheap, it is eventually worth it. However, the initial investment is high.
It is a CAPEX investment. Over the anticipated lifespan, I would say the pricing is $10,000 a month.
The price has room for improvement.
Performance per dollar, when we looked at it, was the highest that we could get for what we needed.
The area it needs to improve is the pricing. It could be better.
Make sure that you have all licenses in one go. Options afterwards can cost extra.
An "all-in-one" license model would be better at this price range.
Ensure the storage system "natively" supports the protocols that you wish to use (i.e., CIFS) without the need for the overhead of internal "conversion VMs" that run the protocols.
Tintri is reasonably priced for the solution you get. Advanced features do require extra to use.
