Quotes From Members Comparing Nimble Storage vs Tintri VMstore

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Our upgrades are seamless. Whether we're adding storage, or upgrading the software, we don't take an outage for those upgrades.I have added expansion shelves on several of them. It is simple to do. You plug it in, you attach two cables, then you press one button, like "Add", and that is all you have to do.They do a good job of helping people do storage in a very simple way. They could probably improve an organization with just about anything. It is all a matter of ease of use, ease of the implementation, etc.Nimble Storage is a great storage solution which will give you a lot insight on the growth of your storage.InfoSight - analytics sight that collects data for all Nimble arrays deployedIt has totally taken away a layer of time and effort, management-wise, from two engineers to give that time back into developing more solutions. It has provided us essentially with a platform to go away and be more creative, knowing that that is stable and can do whatever we chuck at it.Regarding their support, you always get through to somebody who knows exactly what they're talking about.

The Deduplication feature in VDI environments. If Tintri says we can host 3000 VMs in our storage, I know we can host 3000 VMs there. Believe the results.A very good support team that is available 24/7. They have real technical staff with strong knowledge.Web GUI for maintenance and resource monitoring purposes is easy to use.Upgrades are super easy and can be done during business hours without interruptions in production. Its speed has been absolutely fantastic. Its VM-aware features have been excellent to use and integrate with XenServer as well.Tintri VMstore is rock solid. We have not had a single issue with stability. It is also very low maintenance allowing us to concentrate on project work.Support from our vendor and Tintri are brilliant. They have always answered all of our questions promptly.

Cons
The only thing that I can really compare Nimble to is all-flash because, right now, Nimble is a hybrid solution. I would like to see them come out with an all-flash alternative.I'd also like to see them incorporate tools that let me get granular with the VMs. I want to see an individual VM, I want to Snapshot and recover an individual VM.I would like to see native network attached storage (NAS) functionality. Our customers are looking for NAS, and Nimble can't give it to them. There are customers who want to do some different things with the Microsoft Resilient File System. There are some customers who want to do different types of connectivity. I do not know if I would call that an improvement, necessarily, because if you want that, you should get a different product. We have had some stability issues with one array which has happened twice during subsequent software updates but is due to a bad Postgres database.More reporting is probably the only thing that is really lacking. It would be helpful to go to the business and say, "This is how we've evolved with our solution, and this is why we need more." Being able to put forward a business case with data to back it up, essentially.I'd like to see more granular quality of service rules. Currently, I think currently there's not much room for maximum IOPS, but there's not an option for minimum IOPS for a given volume. The backup solution that they are using now probably has not been deduped.

In sync and automated mirror between two Tintris is missing.I would love more insight into each virtual machine statistic. The Tintri Analytics site is excellent for long-term trending, but more data would be great. The product could be improved by adding iSCSI support. We have had to rethink how we implement some of our services due to this.I think with the world soon becoming only SSD, possibly NVMe, and 3D Xpoint. It would make sense for Tintri to drop the hybrid array down the line.Active/active cluster between two Tintris on Hyper-V cluster.Speed of our VDI machines. We have a very high log in and log out ratio and machines are being refreshed instantly so we have a constant boot storm on our storage.Tintri need to be able to innovate faster but maintain the quality of their features.

Pricing and Cost Advice
If we had stuck with EMC, we would have spent a lot more. We have EMC in-house, we have a bunch of them. Switching to Nimble saved me millions of dollars over the past three years... Nimble fills a need for performance within a budget that is in the sub-million dollar range. The first two that I bought were incredibly expensive, compared to the last five to seven that I have bought. The price has come way down, and it has been a year or so since we bought one.If you are a super small company, the product is probably not right for you. It is out of your price range. Anything from mid-SMB up to enterprise, it is absolutely the right product. It is very pricey. You pay for what you get, and this storage solution is great. It is well worth the cost.It is cost-effective, which is important for a service provider, because you're competing with hyper-scale providers who do things at extremely large scale, who tend to kill you on price if you're not careful. It is expensive, but it is worth the “uptime”.Competitive. No licensing. Since everything is included. From a price/performance perspective, Nimble simply can’t be beat. From a TCO perspective, the stability alone pays for itself.

The area it needs to improve is the pricing. It could be better.Make sure that you have all licenses in one go. Options afterwards can cost extra. An "all-in-one" license model would be better at this price range.Ensure the storage system "natively" supports the protocols that you wish to use (i.e., CIFS) without the need for the overhead of internal "conversion VMs" that run the protocols.Tintri is reasonably priced for the solution you get. Advanced features do require extra to use.The licensing model is relatively simple. For things like replication, however, the licensing needs to be looked at.Prices are not cheap, but it runs.I think it is a very good solution. You get a good bang for buck.
