Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Prism Central allows managing the cluster from a single pane of glass, and it allows a deeper dive into the solution.""Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure's most valuable features are all the cloud facilities or benefits it provides for my data center.""You need to send commands through the command-line interface(CLI). This could be improved. The commands are done better in VMware.""The fact that there is only one interface to deploy a complete solution for maximum storage is fantastic.""The most valuable feature is the solution's ease of upgrading.""The solution is easy to use and the pricing is affordable.""Great flexibility and scalability.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS makes it easy to use and manage projects and it has a good reputation."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pros →

"Without any extra costs, I was able to provide a redundant environment.""The community support is very good.""Data redundancy is a key feature, since it can survive failures (disks/servers). We didn’t lose our data or have a service interruption during server/disk failures.""The most valuable feature is the stability of the product.""Most of the features are beneficial and one does not stand out above the rest.""We have not encountered any stability issues for the product.""We use the solution for cloud storage.""High reliability with commodity hardware."

Cons
"To have internal stability, we needed to network the solution ourselves. Performance depends on the application. Performance could be the lack of IOPS, memory and CPU and configuration issues.""The documentation could be improved.""The latency needs improvement""The reporting section of the dashboard could be improved to include more detailed reporting about the servers.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS is new technology in a competitive market. Pricing is too high for a new product and requires better discounts to be able to compete with IBM, Dell EMC, and HP.""Lacks sufficient integration with other vendors and public clouds.""One thing to keep in mind is that only experts can use it. It has to be in the proper hands, instead of going to XYZ people just for some cost savings. So lift-and-shift and migrations might be tricky, because it is not like a VMware.""Make it easier to manage."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Cons →

"It needs a better UI for easier installation and management.""Please create a failback solution for OpenStack replication and maybe QoS to allow guaranteed IOPS.""I would like to see better performance and stability when Ceph is in recovery.""Geo-replication needs improvement. It is a new feature, and not well supported yet.""The management features are pretty good, but they still have room for improvement.""If you use for any other solution like other Kubernetes solutions, it's not very suitable.""I have encountered issues with stability when replication factor was not 3, which is the default and recommended value. Go below 3 and problems will arise.""Routing around slow hardware."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."
  • More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The other big advantage is that Ceph is free software. Compared to traditional SAN based storage, it is very economical."
  • "There is no cost for software."
  • "Most of time, you can get Ceph with the OpenStack solution in a subscription as a bundle."
  • "We never used the paid support."
  • "If you can afford a product like Red Hat Ceph Storage then go for it. If you cannot, then you need to test Ceph and get your hands dirty."
  • "The price of this product isn't high."
  • "The price of Red Hat Ceph Storage is reasonable."
  • "The operational overhead is higher compared to Azure because we own the hardware."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
