We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It also provides a high degree of mobility, as the virtual SAN can be moved relatively painlessly between on-site devices and the cloud.""The features that I found most valuable are ease of use of the software that StarWind offers - with the first setup being a bit painful.""You can build cheap, reliable, replicated virtual machines clusters using simple servers with an all flash disk or SAS\SATA hybrid tiered by performance storage.""The most valuable feature for us is having the ability to configure our local storage using a limited number of disks and using the StarWind VSAN software to keep the cluster nodes in perfect sync.""Immediately we noticed huge performance gains, even on older hardware and once we implemented a 10GB link between both servers, the sync was near-instant after the initial sync was complete.""The Windows-based StarWind GUI is easy to use and understand and integrates seamlessly with VMware's vSphere portal as well.""Besides being 80% cheaper than the other alternatives, the simplicity makes reconfiguration and support much easier.""The backup is readily available for use, and the restoration process is easy."

"Performing a Nutanix software upgrade is a very simple and non-disruptive process.""Its most valuable feature is simplicity. It is so easy to use. Upgrades are easy. It is easy in terms of disaster recovery, failover, database provisioning, and reporting. Everything about it is just simple.""This operating system offers stability. Setup is straightforward.""One of the most valuable features that can be found, is the inclusion of a hypervisor for free.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS is stable. We didn't receive any concerns regarding any problems, The customers have no concerns about the reliability.""The hyperconvergence service, as well as the DR solution, are game-changers for Nutanix.""It's much easier and faster even when you want to create a server from a template or clone.""In general, being able to patch and not having to pay for SanDisk is the best thing about hyper-converged."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pros →

"It gives zero downtime and it works with two nodes rather than three nodes, unlike other solutions.""The most valuable feature of StorMagic SvSAN is its high availability. We have not had any downtime or data loss. Business continuity is highly important.""It helps us prevent any data loss while working with the failover clusters.""StorMagic SvSAN's best feature is that it is platform agnostic.""We compared two solutions for this use case, but we went with StorMagic because it had more capabilities than the others. It's also more reliable, especially in production environments that require availability and sustainability.""This synchronization is easy with StorMagic, and we can establish availability between servers.""What I found most valuable in StorMagic SvSAN is integration. As a software-defined storage solution, it's also very easy to use and it's the trend in the market today. StorMagic SvSAN also made the customer happy because the customer could use his existing hardware with it. The customer had rack-mounted storage, so he didn't want to purchase a dedicated hardware for storage purposes. He just upgraded his hard disk drives.""StorMagic SvSAN is a very effective solution and the interface is good."

Cons
"The software could benefit from more tooling to help with initial deployment.""The initial setup got a little confusing at a few points with differences between the VMware version in documentation vs the latest, etc.""The management console of StarWind Virtual SAN is pretty complex.""The setup and documentation for the installation with the free version could definitely be improved.""We don't really have any issues with this product.""They require more media visibility.""We have, in rare cases, received conflicting guidance between different support folks within StarWind.""The logs can also become very noisy when there is an issue, which is very infrequent."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"The pricing model for software and hardware subscription renewals can be improved.""Native File-Services are under heavy development and Container Services just came out.""Nutanix has a complex infrastructure, we have customers that consider VMware instead. Additionally, the performance could be better.""As far as what could be improved, they have some built-in backup functions already, but any built-in isolation features like vision security features and free LAN features become a security concern.""Deployment could be more user-friendly - currently, it requires certain skills with the network and nodes.""In terms of the IT different categories, I would like for the governing sections to be able to use it in the IT department. If they can have something like a one view management portal or software similar to VMware that would be an added value.""The process of migrating from old hardware to new could improve.""The latency needs improvement"

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Cons →

"In the next release, StorMagic SvSAN should include multi-node clusters, which would allow storage spaces to be used more efficiently.""The deployment of StorMagic SvSAN is very small. However, you need some time to do it. It's important to make a test deployment before the real deployment.""There are two features missing: there's no REST API functionality, and there is no date duplication in it.""If we want to want to replicate the VM to the cloud, or off-site, it does not allow it because of asynchronous. There is no option available.""They should enable data compression deduplication features for the platform.""In terms of what could be improved in StorMagic SvSAN, I don't have a major issue with it, but its user interface should be more customer-oriented.""The only improvement area I can see is their licensing. For example, the memory caching feature is only available in an advanced license. Normally, it's in a standard license. It would be better if they had memory caching features in the product. Some backup features should also be in the product"

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."
  • More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It's fairly cheap when compared to other options. But it can be improved as some features may not be available in the standard license. The vendor positions it as an edge product, so it isn't suitable to compare with VMware vSAN or Nutanix because that's another product altogether."
  • "The pricing of StorMagic SvSAN is fairly good because if you compare it with VMware, it's at a better price. This is an important thing to remember."
  • "The licensing cost is $7,000 per two nodes for two terabytes."
  • "70% cheaper than competitors and provides all the enterprise feature requirements at low cost."
  • "The price of the solution is reasonable. Our budget was two terabytes and the price met our use case well."
  • "The product has good pricing."

The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
