Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"It has solid performance and provides data locality.""It is a good solution and it is easy to work on their platform.""It consolidates our servers, and improves our electricity consumption and cooling as well.""The most valuable feature would be the ease of deployment. That is the most significant feature for me because I've worked with multiple vendors and it's always been very complicated to install the software and get everything running.""Best features are around data locality, compression, and deduplication.""The fact that there is only one interface to deploy a complete solution for maximum storage is fantastic.""I definitely find the reduced power consumption very valuable.""The most valuable features are its ease of use and its good performance."

"There is no in-depth config involved nor third-party needed, saving us time and money.""This product has given us clear visibility into what we need technology-wise to grow.""RecoverPoint give us peace of mind knowing any corruption or server issue can be rectified very quickly, making sure the business impact is minimal.""The most valuable feature is the fact that the storage is integrated with the VxRail so I don't have to go in between systems when I have to monitor my storage.""I can roll out the system in thirty minutes and the customer can work with it.""The most valuable feature in the VxRail solution is the software that binds the management portal and its ease of use of managing the environment. The guys don't have to worry about getting multiple solutions specialist. You can have one person looking at and managing the whole environment.""It is truly a hyper-converged infrastructure, so everything is there together.""It's a turnkey solution, which is good for customers, because they are buying into stability."

Cons
"I would like to see a fuller integration with the public cloud. It would help the user enter the hybrid cloud infrastructure.""As of now, Acropolis and VMware cannot talk to each other. Until we have some kind of interface, it would be much better for Nutanix if they built an interface which can talk. Otherwise, if I have a VMware stack and I already have a Nutanix stack, I create containers, I create clusters on VMware, I create clusters on Nutanix. All of these clusters cannot talk to each other. Then it has to be then subverted as a parallel execution. What happens then is that I have to work in two different environments within my data center. Practically, they are two different data centers but physically and logically, they are one. If they cannot talk to each other that creates a lot of issues. That is something which Nutanix has to develop because for Nutanix it is very simple. For example, Oracle is using a function called GoldenGate. They have a feature called GoldenGate which allows them to talk to various different environments which must really help.""If we can have certified compatibility with other companies, such as Oracle, then it would let us know that they function correctly together.""The GUI for this solution needs improvement.""If they can simplify the software slightly for the installation, that would make all the difference.""We could always use a performance upgrade, or simplified management.""They have offered some new features that I have not deployed so I assume that these issues might have been addressed already, but, at my time there was a networking problem.""One thing I've noticed is that, when you do a shift from VMware to Nutanix, it opens the setup of the VM that's currently running. If people from another site double click on it, it opens the VM instead of the setup of the unit. So I would suggest that this could perhaps be switched. That is so far the only change I would like. I would like it if they could fix the instance where you double click on a VM and it opens the VM instead of the setup. That's the only thing that's a major bother to me."

"The initial setup between the different Dell departments is fragmented. The engineers who come to rack/stack and do the initial config should be trained on all the areas and work with the different Dell departments whilst they are onsite to give a smoother install and better experience for customer.""At present, VxRail is a hyperconverged state of the art product being installed in a legacy way. We need hyperconverged install teams.""The only issue which is every now and again is that when you log in it will tell you that there's an issue with VxRail when there actually isn't. All that's required is a refresh or reload. The solution itself works but you may get some bad reports every now and again. Probably once every couple of months; there is no effect to the solution's capabilities.""I would like to see integration with vCenter if possible.""From a hardware and software perspective, there could be an improvement in the sales cycle, as there is a lot of hoops to go through to get pricing on a solution.""I would like better integration with VCF from VMware, which is the Cloud Foundation tool set, so we can easily provision servers very quickly.""I would like it to tier to the cloud effectively, making sure that cold data can be pushed out to some sort of Bitbucket.""It still has some maturity to grow. It needs to be more tightly integrated with its own family of products. It has shown that it is open with the other products within the market, through its stack, but it needs to have the proof in the market (with use-cases), and it has to have the scalability with the integration."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"Their technical support is really good. They have been very helpful.""There are a lot of features included with Nutanix that cost a lot with other companies.""They should lower the price. If they did they would fall into a more competitive market because the price does scare a lot of potential customers away when they get the quote.""Pricing varies greatly between license and editions.""Our licensing fee on the total setup up was about R900 000.""I think it's cheaper than VMware in terms of cost.""AHV is free! This is a great feature that should be taken advantage of."

More Nutanix Acropolis AOS Pricing and Cost Advice »

"Compare it to what you spent on your last solution.""We most likely pay yearly for support. The cost was justified by now because it stays up and I don't have to constantly open tickets. I probably rebooted the system once or twice. We haven't replaced any discs in the storage, we haven't had to do any disc replacements, so it just runs. You pay a little more but you cut down on the maintenance.""The price is a little bit on the higher side but the system and management are so quick and easy that it's worth it for the customer.""We were expecting Dell EMC to bring us something that would work very quickly and easily, but also be at a reasonable price point, and they did.""The price point needs improvement, certainly for smaller SMBs. The cost of it is still quite painful. I think all vendors should do a product which is capped either by terabytes, IOPs, or VM instances. It should be an SMB solution that's going to make hyper-converged solutions easier for SMBs to get hold of. It's fine for those big guys that have billions of dollars of budget, but not for customers who have barely a 100,000 dollars or pounds in budget.""The real ROI is the benefit of being able to do a true hybrid cloud, not having to move from CAPEX to OPEX in a pure break.""There is an administrative cost savings. Instead of having seven to 15 separate boxes that someone has to administer on 15 different terminals, you can do the majority of it from one interface. Therefore, it saves on manpower costs.""A typical node that I would sell to a customer has a list price be between $80,000 and $100,000 per node. Organizations typically start with four nodes. That's the hardware, software, VMware licensing, everything. Customers typically pay about half of that - approximately $45,000 to $50,000 a node. On average, it costs about $200,000 to get your foot in the door."

While both systems do a very good job within the nodal limits for scaling a compute environment - it is the networking layer that has the most impact on GPU sharing across a cluster.  From a practical perspective, VxRail nodes will typically offer a discount over native Nutanix nodes.  With Nutanix you also need servers, disk, networking and GPU's.  VxRail will be more integrated with sized nodes, Dell, Cisco or other networking and often the VSphere 7 licenses can be integrated - achieving a lower net cost.

Testing for optimizations on either VSAN or Nutanix to see which favors a vGPU system would be something I would like to see quantified.  My guess is they are network constrained and differences between VxRail and a build your own Nutanix environment will be negligible for the same network.  Would be good to confirm if there is an optimal point - say 40Gbps vs 10Gbps or 100Gbps for the inter-GPU message passing.

"Nutanix node you will be running vSphere on top on the underlining Nutanix software" This description is incorrect.

There is no "layer" between the hardware and the OS which is ESXI hypervisor on both cases.

Best option for vSphere 7 is the VxRail as it designed on VMware technology and built in integrates with vSphere, on a Nutanix node you will be running vSphere on top on the underlining Nutanix software.
