Researched Nutanix Acropolis but chose VMware vSphere: It is a fast, responsive solution that is easy to use
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
The configuration is easy, and it's flexible.
The cloud features in-site offering, which I found to be very interesting.
We are suggesting Nutanix to the management because of scalability and time efficiency.
The management interface of this solution is great.
The most valuable features are its ease of use and its good performance.
I definitely find the reduced power consumption very valuable.
It consolidates our servers, and improves our electricity consumption and cooling as well.
Flexibility. We're able to mix performance nodes with storage nodes easily. Unlike other vendors where, if we start a hyperconverged solution with them, we have to stick to a specific model, to a specific series with specific capabilities, with Nutanix it's very easy to mix and match the best solution, especially for a dynamic infrastructure like ours.
It has allowed us to be more resilient to infrastructure and hardware failure, reduced hardware costs, and decreased recovery time from failures.
The free ESXi hypervisor was a great way to get started, as it allowed us to introduce virtual machines so that users could start to experience the advantages.
We are able to patch our hosts during production hours with the ability to keep services running.
The vMotion in particular I think is the most valuable because this feature provides migrations of virtual machines in case you want to run do maintenance.
Production people can quickly reboot the server with ESXi Quick Boot.
The most valuable feature is vSAN, as it reduces the cost of SAN storage and maintenance.
We are able to create virtual machines and move them from one host to another, controlling the resources.
The most valuable feature is its ability to revert to previous snapshots during testing of various guest and application deployments.
In terms of the IT different categories, I would like for the governing sections to be able to use it in the IT department. If they can have something like a one view management portal or software similar to VMware that would be an added value.
There could be better support for high power ESX and other cross platform applications.
The storage and back-up facilities could be improved. We need day-to-day encrypting of the database.
I would have liked it if Nutanix were a hardware as well as a software platform.
The product could be improved with more security. The product needs a bit more experience in the market. I think you don't have the possibility to add other hardware. It could be improved with the ability to add and extend.
One thing I've noticed is that, when you do a shift from VMware to Nutanix, it opens the setup of the VM that's currently running. If people from another site double click on it, it opens the VM instead of the setup of the unit. So I would suggest that this could perhaps be switched. That is so far the only change I would like. I would like it if they could fix the instance where you double click on a VM and it opens the VM instead of the setup. That's the only thing that's a major bother to me.
The GUI for this solution needs improvement.
As of now, Acropolis and VMware cannot talk to each other. Until we have some kind of interface, it would be much better for Nutanix if they built an interface which can talk. Otherwise, if I have a VMware stack and I already have a Nutanix stack, I create containers, I create clusters on VMware, I create clusters on Nutanix. All of these clusters cannot talk to each other. Then it has to be then subverted as a parallel execution. What happens then is that I have to work in two different environments within my data center. Practically, they are two different data centers but physically and logically, they are one. If they cannot talk to each other that creates a lot of issues. That is something which Nutanix has to develop because for Nutanix it is very simple. For example, Oracle is using a function called GoldenGate. They have a feature called GoldenGate which allows them to talk to various different environments which must really help.
Reducing the cost of vSphere would be an improvement.
It would be great if the free version included a management tool that was a scaled-down vCenter Manager.
Get the HTML5 client to 100% parity to replace the Flash client.
I would like to see VMware vSphere provide a centralized patch service on the VMware level, regardless of your operating systems.
I would like more Amazon stuff inside of VMware.
Reporting on vCenter needs to be improved.
Generally, the user interface needs to be improved for non-technical people.
Two improvements that I would like to see are higher resolution console modes for guests and easier switching between consoles.
Pricing and Cost Advice
I think it's cheaper than VMware in terms of cost.
Our licensing fee on the total setup up was about R900 000.
Their technical support is really good. They have been very helpful.
The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price.
VMware is costly versus other competitors but is still one of the market leaders and expanding now with partners like AWS.
The license of VMware is a one-time payment and you can continue to enroll in support for troubleshooting and also administer the licenses.
The price is high, but you get back a lot.
Our ROI is good.
There is an average performance boost, especially if you use VM encryption inside the VMware with another product, like McAfee. You will see great improvement in these cases.
The licensing fees are on a yearly basis.
VMware does provide organizations with discounts. The customer service license fee we got discounts on from the supplier in order for us to get the best out of the license fees. That's our experience. We possibly paid less than our partner company. The partner is only local and not global like our firm.
The pricing is a bit complex.
