Once this solution is configured, it will help administrators centralize their management of the environment.
Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control gives us diverse monitoring capability that can be extremely powerful.
Using Enterprise Manager, I was able to create user profiles for all the instances that have the same profile. Secondly, it's easier to manage performance, to automate the AWR reports to run every half an hour, or hour. Then, if you have a performance issue you just open the report and you can see what was running the last one hour, the SQL statements, or what was causing the performance issues.
Of course, that you can manage and create the backup strategies from a central environment for all your environments, so you don’t have to do so on each database. You can set up the policy you want for each database, but you do it from a central environment.
One of the clearest examples is the agility of discovering processes/sessions that are burdening the database environment. With this agility, the DBA can more quickly verify this type of problem, in addition to checking locked sessions and not having to do several searches in views and tables of the data dictionary. The tool already does this for you in an agile way.
Another feature is the Resource Manager, where we can manage the consumption of resources of certain queries, separately in resource groups. Depending on the characteristics of the query, queries can be placed in groups that consume less database and hardware resources.
The solution provides very useful insights for application and database performance tuning. We were able to do away with guess work in determining where the bottlenecks were in application performance.
Advisors provide quick access to Insight and best practice information for performance tuning and configuration.
The most valued feature is the streamlining of the DevOps process, automation and orchestration. It provides the ability for the entire Dev lifecycle to actually be incorporated into a single stream.
For repeated installations and provisioning of VMs, we now have a clear definition of what has been installed, and we can monitor all that stuff.
The initial setup was straightforward. It's easy to deploy.
Before it would take months to deploy a VM, now, with this solution, we can deploy many VMs in one hour. We can do a stack of them with Mediaware.
The setup was complex in many ways. The first reason is that we have many teams who work on it so it gets complicated gathering all of the people. The second reason is that it can be complicated to install it quickly, within a reasonable amount of time.
The setup was straightforward. We upgraded to a newer version seamlessly. It worked really well.
We haven't hit any limits yet, scalability is good.
The whole VMR ecosystem allows us to serve multiple customers, multiple organizations and also multiple units per customer. We can cover every level without using the whole VRA and the rest of the ecosystem. We don't need to use a separate product to provide separate functionalities for the customer. We can cover all the use cases using only one product on our side which is really helpful. T
Because this solution provides insight into all of the areas within the IT stack, it would benefit from enhancements in security.
The product does have room for improvement in patch management.
Because all our banking infrastructure is based on Oracle, I’ve tried to register Enterprise Manager on the middleware level, let's say, WebLogic applications. But I cannot say that I can do all the administration from Enterprise Manager, that I can do from the WebLogic Admin Console. So, I think here it needs some improvement: Things that you can do on the WebLogic Admin Console, you should be able to do them on the Enterprise Manager, so you don’t have to log into the Admin Console.
Sometimes the alerts are coming a bit late, for example, an alert for the CPU. It depends on the threshold that you have, how long you want to check the CPU of the machine. I got some faulty alerts with Data Guard. I had stopped a synchronization for maintenance and then I re-synchronized Oracle Data Guard. It took some time to appear in Enterprise Manager and send me the right notification that Data Guard was up and running and synchronizing. I realized this because I went directly into the database to check the status of Data Guard, and it was telling me that it was running okay. But in Enterprise Manager, it needed some more time to update the interface.
One of the things that can be improved is the quality of results generated by BI Publisher. They are somewhat confusing when it comes to analysis.
The installation steps are very complex and the documentation for them is very generic and does not make very clear the correct steps from the installation to the addition of the host and database.
Another point that can be improved is the agent instability in the monitored hosts, because sometimes an agent has to be resynchronized to recapture the information.
Oracle Data Guard monitoring: There are no alerts for redo log transport failure.
We still struggle a little bit with the configuration as far as making sure that we have all the endpoints where they need to be, because that's not as agile as we'd like in the back-end. We're working towards that with our DevOps teams to make sure that we're touching the right endpoints and getting the right data.
in general, it took us a long time to get it off the ground. We had a lot of issues upfront and we determined that we just needed to scrap it. I think we scrapped it two or three times before we actually got it built the way we wanted, and we're still not where we need to be. We have had downtime. There have been some issues, but we're also two iterations behind on version.
The most important thing that we missed in vRanger was the possibility to mount several images instantaneously and present it so we can run it immediately.
The initial setup was complex because we have a high availability cluster. Especially when it comes to upgrades, we have a lot of downtimes and problems. The upgrade experience has been painful.
7.5 is not user-friendly, in fact, it's a nightmare. They changed everything on the graphic user interface, the mode where the user interacts with the product.
I have not found this solution to be user-friendly. It's really complicated. The demo shows that you can automate anything but they only show basic scenarios. If you want to do anything more complicated than that, it becomes very complicated to set up.
It's not cheap.
I would like to see more automation, more ways to automate automation tasks.
Pricing and Cost Advice
The licensing costs are largely too high.
We are using the free version. We are not using any licensed packages of Enterprise Manager, so I’m not quite sure how much each package is. As I understand it, there are different plug-ins that you need to buy for Enterprise Manager.
It made the provisioning of the virtual machines easier and faster. We can react more quickly to customers' demands.
A simplified version for small businesses would be good.
We do plan to see ROI with any new implementation of new technologies being implemented within our environment.
As far as value is concerned, it has been essential to our environment. We have been able to deploy VMs quickly and the developers have their own sandbox, so they can spin up and destroy VMs at their own will.
There is confusion between licensing levels. There are three different licensed versions of vRealize Automation, and there are different things which can happen in each of them.
vRealize automation really should be a front door to the whole VMware suite of products.
The solution has helped to increase infrastructure, agility, speed, and provisioning in the time to market.
We have seen significant ROI. We used to have physical servers, it took 90 days to get a server, order it, buy it, and get it in. We have it down to 10 minutes, building a server with virtualization, and now that's too slow. So, we let the customer do it at their speed. Therefore, it is pretty much up in a couple of minutes and they have a server.
