We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Exalogic offers integration with other engineered systems, which increases the throughput capability and enables processing of bigger and heavier workloads.""Scalablility: When we need to upgrade from an eighth-rack to a full-rack, the real downtime is less then an hour.""Provides high-speed network, strong storage features (ZFS), High Availability out of the box, and is Integrated with a large number of products.""The automation and provisioning of the environment, as well as the centralized monitoring, have all improved over the years.""Server consolidation. In a cloud architecture, moving the HA VM from one to other is faster. This is because of the InfiniBand network fabric between the compute nodes and storage nodes (ZFS Storage).""The main benefit of using the solution is for the performance it provides.""Enterprise high-speed interoperability: With IPoIB we can deliver to other environments, either IP-Ethernet-based or IP-InfiniBand-based protocol, both with minimum bandwidth capacity of 10Gbps, 20Gbps, or 40Gbps, redundantly."

"Because SuperCluster is a specially engineered system, we have confidence in that all the components are compatible with one another. Everything runs together as a well-coupled group of machines, and the performance is great (especially the memory).""In this setup, the traffic is distributed among the nodes, enhancing the overall performance compared to a scenario where all traffic is directed to a single server.""Our primary use case is for E-Business Suite applications the applications for the government, and most of the applications that use an HCM.""SuperCluster is basically a combination of Oracle, with Exadata and Compute node features, so it is a computing cluster that is integrated in a single infrastructure such that we don't need a separate solution for the application database, the data storage database, and everything else the application needs.""A valuable feature is the Exadata Storage appliance, optimized for database queries.""The two features that I find to be the most valuable are high availability and high performance.""Scalability and technical support.""Because it's classified as an engineered system, it's all integrated, it's all supported by one vendor. We don't have to go to multiple vendors for support, it's all integrated under Oracle."

Cons
"The solution needs to add a network virtualization feature similar to that of VxRail. If they could implement that, it would be great for the product.""Middleware application services, such as statistics, data mining, could be better.""The solution is prone to disk failures. This needs to improve. Over the past four years we've had to replace about six of them. They've failed almost every three to six months."

"A major issue for us is that after the most recent update of SuperCluster, they have now stopped all future production of new versions. That is to say, after M7 there was M8, and now there are no future versions planned (e.g. M9) in the market.""If they had an application that centralized the administration, not about the monitoring, but for the configuration, it would be better.""It's not working as we expected. We thought it would be fast and reliable but we are not getting the reliability. It's not stable.""If it had capabilities to integrate really well with DB2 or SQL Server or Hitachi SANs, those sort of things, that would be a real benefit. Right now, it's fully supported only under all Oracle infrastructure.""Speaking from a business perspective, our main problem is that our particular edition of SuperCluster is now at end-of-life status, making it obsolete and impossible to get support for. This presents a challenge for us, as finding a path to our next solution is not easy.""I would like to see control domain and zone management via a management console, similar to that of OVM.""We have faced network connectivity issues.""Not a very user friendly solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Get the price of the license you will need for the middleware that will be running on top of the Exalogic. Otherwise, you can use another middleware solution, as long as it can run on top of Oracle Linux."
  • "Pricing and licensing are two very delicate aspects when talking about Oracle, especially engineered systems. The prices are quite high compared with other similar products, so the CapEx analysis and investment return have to be very well studied."
  • "To expand the hardware's capability requires a massive investment."

  • "For us, the licensing costs are a large amount, but we are also paying for the rack, the SLA, and other extras. When I look into our organization's requirements regarding performance, machine load, etc., I believe that, while expensive, SuperCluster is nevertheless good for us."
  • "Due to the multiple products involved in our use of SuperCluster (including different software, hardware, etc.), I cannot comment on the licensing aspect."
