We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Scalablility: When we need to upgrade from an eighth-rack to a full-rack, the real downtime is less then an hour.""The main benefit of using the solution is for the performance it provides.""Server consolidation. In a cloud architecture, moving the HA VM from one to other is faster. This is because of the InfiniBand network fabric between the compute nodes and storage nodes (ZFS Storage).""Enterprise high-speed interoperability: With IPoIB we can deliver to other environments, either IP-Ethernet-based or IP-InfiniBand-based protocol, both with minimum bandwidth capacity of 10Gbps, 20Gbps, or 40Gbps, redundantly.""Provides high-speed network, strong storage features (ZFS), High Availability out of the box, and is Integrated with a large number of products.""Exalogic offers integration with other engineered systems, which increases the throughput capability and enables processing of bigger and heavier workloads.""The automation and provisioning of the environment, as well as the centralized monitoring, have all improved over the years."

"The most valuable feature is the simplicity of its scalability: being able to grow it without having to make sure you get the right disks and the right nodes. The solution is also easy to manage. It's all right there in the vSphere Client. You're not going through multiple things. You don't have to know, once you've created the vSAN node. You add storage, it sees it, and you create your data storage from there. Everything is right there for you.""All orchestration and monitoring are routed to the cloud.""VMware has been around for a long time are are doing a decent job at catching up with the latest technologies i.e. bringing in kubernetes and containerization. Overall, this is a great tool for virtualization.""The most valuable feature of VMware vSAN is the ease of management. VMware vSAN it's a part of VMware ESXi and when you do patching for VMware ESXi, VMware vSAN receives the patches too.""We are finding that vSAN is a lot more scalable and adaptable, because we can go in with hybrid arrays for our lower-end storage needs or with all-flash versions of vSAN for places where we need more performance, and it's coming in at a lower cost point than an actual traditional array.""Good performance, reliable and agile.""it's easy to scale, it's easy to predict IOP needs, and you can design for low latency using all-flash... Also, for setting up new clusters for VDI quickly, it's nice. You don't have to wait on an order for a storage vendor to ship you a system and help you configure it, you do it all yourself. And the sizing guides are pretty straightforward.""The most valuable features are its price point and that you can use existing storage; no specific storage requirements are needed."

Cons
"Middleware application services, such as statistics, data mining, could be better.""The solution needs to add a network virtualization feature similar to that of VxRail. If they could implement that, it would be great for the product.""The solution is prone to disk failures. This needs to improve. Over the past four years we've had to replace about six of them. They've failed almost every three to six months."

More Oracle Exalogic [EOL] Cons →

"This solution could be improved by having more than one controller for the environment. VMware depends on one controller for the whole environment, whereas Nutanix has one controller for each node. Because there is only one controller with VMware, if there was any drop, then the whole environment would stop working. In Nutanix, I have five nodes—there is one controller for each node and it depends on a virtual controller—so if the controller of any node is down, the whole environment will still work.""We plan to switch products since the hardware nowadays is a little bit outdated and we need to scale up a bit.""The solution functions as the marketing says, as long as you follow certain rules.""One thing in vSAN that I would like to improve is using vSAN as a repository for files or other things. For example, with Horizon, maybe we can save profiles with UEM on there. That would be a good feature that I would like.""Lacks sufficient storage terabytes.""This solution would benefit from better collaboration with Cisco for driver updates.""It could be cheaper.""Only the stretched cluster requires a minor improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Get the price of the license you will need for the middleware that will be running on top of the Exalogic. Otherwise, you can use another middleware solution, as long as it can run on top of Oracle Linux."
  • "Pricing and licensing are two very delicate aspects when talking about Oracle, especially engineered systems. The prices are quite high compared with other similar products, so the CapEx analysis and investment return have to be very well studied."
  • "To expand the hardware's capability requires a massive investment."
  • More Oracle Exalogic [EOL] Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The first 1-2 years of purchasing vSAN will be expensive. Thereafter, the longer you are running it, the more cost savings you will have."
  • "Its reasonable, compare with other storage vendors"
  • "Basically, vSAN is a license in addition to that of the classic VMware Vsphere, which is also mandatory."
  • "I would like to see this technology be made available to smaller businesses, who might benefit from high availability but struggle with the entry fee."
  • "Perhaps a bundle, like Essentials, would allow more businesses to make the leap to the product."
  • "We have increased our user productivity."
  • "What made us go with this solution was price point. When you can utilize existing storage infrastructure, and not have to continually purchase new SAN products out there that are going up in price as time goes by, then it's a wonderful thing."
  • "We did consider other hyperconverged solutions. It usually came down to price. vSan was the most cost effective thing."
