We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is a central solution in terms of how to actually use it. It has a very easy dashboard. Everything is concise. We are able to create custom sensors. For different parts of the business, we have many products across many environments, and it works for everything.""It is great for service level agreements and can comply fully with internet monitoring or any interface.""It is user-friendly. It is easy to set up health checks within PRTG and use scans. It is like a self-service tool, and anyone can configure their own settings within PRTG.""There was only one feature I liked about PRTG Network Monitor a lot, and that was bandwidth monitoring, though, in the newer versions of the tool, that feature is now a bit lacking. Pricing for PRTG Network Monitor is also not as expensive. It's a good tool, even for beginners.""It is easy when it comes to dependencies of devices, so if your router goes down, the three or four switches behind it will automatically be paused so that you don't get multiple alerts.""It has made our infrastructure more reliable.""The most valuable feature of PRTG Network Monitor is the different monitoring probes available.""The initial setup is pretty easy."

"The initial setup was straightforward. We didn't find it to be too complex.""The data collection from our VMs, containers, databases, and backend components is valuable.""Great monitoring of network devices.""The solution's most valuable aspect is its ability to get information about all of the security measurements in my environment.""The most valuable thing that we have seen within our group is the ability to ingest all this raw data and have it organized in a certain way so that different groups can get effective alerting from this massive amount of raw data that is out there.""The features I have found most valuable are log searching and log analytics, both of which are quick features.""The alerts are the most valuable feature.""Splunk has drawn our attention to how the network is running. If there are alarms on things that are not functioning, it gives us early warning on problems that could arise."

Cons
"PRTG Network Monitor could improve by having descriptions for the tab usages. The dashboards or interface could be easier to understand.""PRTG could use reporting tools and mobile alert tools. It should be easier to diagnose and respond to problems from a mobile device on the go.""The thing that we do struggle with a bit is in the historic data. If I want look over 30 days, because it averages out onto one graph, you can't zoom in and drill down information.""There seems to be a big jump from the basic scan to the really thorough scan. There is a big jump in the quantity of sensors it uses for certain things. One minute you might get ten and then the next you get 200. There seems to be a big jump between the two at times.""I have an issue with DFS, distributed file services... there isn't one by default. Taking into account the difference between DFS and DFSR as well would be great.""Other monitoring tools that I have used are easier to use.""Having a Unix implementation or Unix installation could be an improvement. Right now, it's based just on Windows, and that's a problem for some customers.""PRTG Network Monitor could improve the price."

More PRTG Network Monitor Cons →

"We still use Splunk Enterprise licensing. A lot of the newer features go into Splunk Cloud before Enterprise. We're not looking to switch our licensing over, so we're falling behind on the newer features.""The solution's stability is an area that has room for improvement. It needs to provide constant stability to its users.""Splunk would be better if some tools were integrated to be able to take action on security or network concerns.""The deployment can be quite complex.""The price has room for improvement.""I would like to see an improvement and some innovation in the customer interface.""The solution should have more sensors regarding fiber intelligence for security measures.""There is a lot of room for improvement with the automation."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
