We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is drill-down monitoring, which shows us from one interface the transaction chain from the front end to back end.""Infrastructure Monitoring and End User Monitoring are the product’s most valuable features to me.""FxV is valuable as we can playback the session.""Sometimes we can solve problems before they occur.""Real time database monitoring and alerting are valuable.""At a glance I can easily see what is going on with all of my VMware environments, including top consumers of resources.""The ability to track performance of an application or application suite over time is extremely valuable to our business partners and for our application development team with near real time results.""Capacity on database and file servers. I found the algorithms to forecast growth and concerns particularly intuitive."

"Extremely user friendly: Any IT professional can learn how to admin NPM in a short time.""SSL Certificate Monitoring and Expiry Alerting""The solution can be deployed quickly.""AppInsight for SQL: Enables us to see the relevant error log entries on the same page as performance parameters.""Monitoring of processes and services is the most valuable feature. It is not necessarily just the server alone in terms of the CPU or the memory. We can go in-depth into services and processes.""The product integrates with Remedy.""The application dependency feature identifies issues between applications and servers or within the network where the application is hosted. It highlights related problems, whether related to packet processing or other issues, enabling the creation of alerts and reports accordingly.""The most valuable feature is application monitoring."

Cons
"I want to see a new interface that contains HTML5 features. The current version of Foglight (on-premise edition) is so fusty in comparison with leaders of Gartner APM Quadrant - i.e. Appdynamics, NewRelic, Dynatrace.""My only complaint from Foglight for monitoring is that you only get a plot for five minute average for metrics like CPU and Memory, on the application side I can see metrics more quickly at 15 seconds for metrics like active sessions, heap. I would like to see the same for CPU and memory.""They need to improve the stability of FxM and FxV.""It needs a more intuitive way to create and implement custom "Cartridges" to be deployed through out a Federated environment.""The version compatibility needs work.""The “cartridge” concept for every little thing is a bit of a bother to implement.""I want to see mobile access application in the next release.""We are running a Webmethods stack (Software AG) and Foglight is unable to instrument. We are in a POC with Dynatrace and it was able to instrument with little effort."

More Quest Foglight for APM [EOL] Cons →

"The major concern in the product revolves around application performance monitoring since end-to-end application monitoring is not possible with the tool.""This product has no real downside unless they fail to continue development of its capabilities.""I think they need to make reporting easier and more simple & dynamic.""It should also be easier to upgrade SolarWinds. AppDynamics is harder to deploy but easier to upgrade. So AppDynamics takes a lot of time and effort to install, but you can upgrade it in minutes. SolarWinds is the opposite. It's easy to deploy, but upgrades take forever. To date, nobody can complete it on time, so the production environment is sitting idle.""Some custom applications cannot be monitored, and a lot more applications need to be included.""It lacks a user experience for measuring things like the end-to-end time for which a user waits for a specific response in the system. In the application layer, it has some very basic stuff. You have to build your own with manuscripts and things like that.""When you implement SolarWinds on a larger scale my customers complain about the speed.""The templates could use improvement. Currently, they are quite complex. They should have drag-and-drop functionality instead. It would make it easier to use."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I recall it being a very expensive solution relative to function and stability."
  • "The price is expensive for us."
  • "Foglight can be expensive I would go with the pricing at a three year deal."
  • "Since the product split – the licensing is a bit more complex."
  • More Quest Foglight for APM [EOL] Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I have always said SolarWinds is very “proud” of their products, meaning they are expensive. I cannot afford to purchase all the licenses I need for all the SolarWinds products."
  • "When planning for the number of licenses to purchase, make sure you understand all of the elements within an application required to really understand performance well. In our case, we quickly came to the conclusion that an unlimited license for SAM was the way to go."
  • "Nagios XI, WhatsUpGold, Uptime Software, PRTG, Manage Engine, and SpiceWorks are the other tools that have lower pricing and licensing costs. However, they can't compete with SolarWinds when it comes to the features and functionality that SolarWinds can provide."
  • "I would advise potential buyers to wait until the end of the quarter, end of year, or other time to place orders. There are actually great deals to be had at those times if your budget cycle can match up."
  • "Pricing and licensing is fair for what you get. It does have a great bang-for-the-buck appeal."
  • "SAM is not per server so the pricing model can be deceiving. If you have an enterprise environment, you will quickly exceed your licensing quickly. You should know this before going in."
  • "Understanding the counts of objects to monitor will determine the licensing need. In terms of pricing, it’s not cheap but it’s not expensive as larger vendors whose products don’t have all the features or integrations."
  • "The product might cost you $30,000 USD to buy, but scaling this solution requires the purchase of additional polling engines at $20,000 USD each."
