We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
The solution provides us with a single platform to move, manage, and recover our data across on-premise locations. Some of the guys have been using it to move a virtual machine from VMware to the Microsoft solution, Hyper-V. They back it up and then they restore to the different virtual machine provider, and that works great. The multi-tenancy is the most valuable feature for us because it's the only software that is fully multi-tenant and that has all the features we need to provide to all our tenants. It provides us with advanced features for MySQL and Oracle, among other platformsThe most valuable feature is sharing data sets like they're in a private cloud. We call it our "private cloud" because we can share anything that is inside our backup set with our colleagues or with other people, and yet, everything is still in Belgrade, in Serbia. It's not somewhere else on cloud servers. Everything is in our environment. We are using a KVM system in our cloud, and this solution works very well with it.It's a complete software that can protect all the main applications. Perhaps that's the feature I like most. The integration with the NetApp and other apps is also very nice. It's very stable. It's the leader in backup and archiving. It is much more scalable and flexible than everything else in the market.

I would rate the solution's web interface at eight out of ten. It's just fantastic and intuitive. It's so easy to use. I've never done any formal training on Rubrik, but I was able to quickly come to grips with its capabilities. The archiving, off-of-box, is awesome. It lets you put your data where you want it and gives you the peace of mind of having more than one copy of it. And it's smart about the way that it does the archiving. It doesn't just copy one-for-one. It does all of its processing of the deduplication and compression before it sends it off to the archive, which helps with our cloud costs. The solution’s ransomware recovery, from a security perspective, is one of the biggest features of the product. We don't have to worry about the operational complexity of air-gapped backups and can rely more on the immutability approach. It is a highly valued feature in this solution. The Live Mount is one of the most valuable features Rubrik has. It gives me an opportunity to run DR testing. For any patching or DR testing that I need to do, I'm able to run it as if it were my production system but, in reality, it's just a copy of my production system. The fact that the API is so available to us with the playground — there's an internal and public playground — is also valuable. We can write API calls — and although I'm sure there's a way we could hurt the data — we write those calls with a lot of certainty that we won't be destroying anything. We write these API calls using really easy mechanisms and generate automation a lot faster. Also, the web interface is really great. The design, from a user-experience standpoint, is really straightforward and easy to use... they nailed it. Usually, from the very first panel, the dashboard that you land on after login, you've got most of your functionality right around where you need it to be. You've got your new items on the left, you've got your support on the top right. Nothing really seems out of place or just stuck in someplace. The tech support is extremely helpful. The live mounting and compatibility of different operating systems is great.

It is incredibly granular and I really appreciate that. The fact that we are able to test the failover of live systems during regular hours is invaluable to our organization. We are in the process of switching over our production data center and Zerto has been a true time-saver that has cost us zero downtime. The most valuable feature of Zerto is its overall flexibility, where it can be used for standard DR or you can also use it for server migrations, data center consolidations, etc.We use to use VMware replication appliances to attempt to replicate our VMs to remote locations and servers, but Zerto's one-to-many replication options with deduplication have made the process much simpler without having to constantly worry about the versions of each driver. The ease of failover and test environments has proven invaluable.I really like how you can test the failover as often as you need. The ability to perform DR testing to ensure data integrity is critical.

Cons
Just to keep it running is time-consuming. There are five people on my team. Commvault was supposed to be one of the less time-consuming solutions, but in reality it takes 60 percent of our time just to keep it running, and that's not even fine-tuning it; that's just to keep it running. There is room for improvement in its user interface and web console, called Command Center. They are improving it every year so if they continue in that direction, I think it will be a very reliable console. They can always improve the interface design to make it easier. Sometimes, you need to click two or three times to do something. They should look at what tabs are used most and make them more accessible, to cut the time it takes to get to that information. This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it.I think the one thing that could be improved is the customer experience. The interface should be more user friendly. The back of virtual machines needs improvement. I know they're working on it. They're always doing new things but I think they still have a little bit more to do.Its competitor, Veeam, includes backup and replication in the same product. I don't know if Commvault has it or not, but they should if they don't.Support for this product needs to be improved because I have seen a couple of cases where it is taking more than the required time to solve issues.

We would like to be able to do granular restores directly from Exchange. Also, more granular management of VM backups would help. The deployment and configuration of the backup service is something that could be streamlined a little bit, particularly when you're trying to do a SQL workload. You have to install a backup service on the server. You only have to do it once and then you're done, but you have to do that on every server that you want to protect. There is room for improvement through a further extension of their Office 365 backup platform. In addition, it's still a bit cost-prohibitive to backup NAS. Those would be the two primary areas for improvement.[A] feature that the product can improve on is being able to restore Active Directory at a more granular level. For example, it would be good if we could restore actual memberships for users instead of the entire server.I have a personal want which might not necessarily make sense with Rubrik as a company or Rubrik as a software, but it'd be really nice if they could also handle things like item-level backups and restores of Active Directory objects and DNS and DCP objects. Its cost is high.I would like to have a built-in index searching ability of files/system files within the Rubrik interface to determine if a file or item exists, rather than just recovering it, and then doing a search for the file afterwards.Global management of multiple systems is lacking, as is reporting across multiple installed units.

It would also be nice if they could find a way to make it where one VM does not impact the entire journal history of the VPG.The GUI could be streamlined a bit more to enhance the administrative tasks. The setup process is time-consuming.I wouldn't mind seeing Zerto sold at a cheaper price point, although the cost is comparable to VMware SRM.The number one thing we have found we would like changed so far is the cost per VM. It would be great to get that pricing reduced.I would like to see better notifications when the sync is off for an extended length of time.I think Zerto could do better with size planning because it would be nice to analyze a server for a week and give an estimate on sizing the Journal.Increased granularity in how long to keep the journal would be nice.

Pricing and Cost Advice
Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers. Our yearly cost is around €20,000... The cost is based on the number of users and the amount of data. They sell it per terabyte. The price could perhaps be lower as well.In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually.Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair.

We pay yearly and it's based on the number of bricks. We do perpetual licensing... It was all based on the amount of storage we needed to use. We did a cost analysis compared to Tivoli and it was in line with other solutions. It is a great value, but its cost is still a bit high. The product is not cheap, but for good reason. It simply works and is very fast.Rubrik is not cheap. Hopefully, you can archive your data on cheap storage to keep the investment minimal. The cost was less than our previous provider, and this is a much better product.Rubrik is an all inclusive price. No additional implementation costs or licencing.

I would suggest getting a dedicated, well-informed rep.Zerto is not cheap but is an invaluable asset. You need to figure out how many critical servers and applications you have in your environment so you will know how many Zerto licenses to buy.The cost per VM is a bit high. The cost is not dirt cheap but also is not terrible. We found that in an event that was massive enough to cause an entire cluster to go offline we would be happy with our core services up and running. You are getting what you pay for, as this is a solution that requires minimal management after it is configured. While we find the twenty-five VM license somewhat inflexible, the actual setup costs are minimal as the product is so easy to install.
