We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The support team is available to solve any problem efficiently.""StarWind Virtual SAN is essentially hardware agnostic, allowing us to build out a specific hardware layer based upon the customer's unique requirements.""StarWind has provided us with a top-notch, well-supported, robust vSAN offering when other vendors have moved to hyper-converged solutions that are outside of our average clients' reach from a financial and resource perspective.""When we need additional storage but want to keep the size of the SANs manageable, the StarWind Virtual SAN has allowed me to do everything needed.""We like their high availability. It reduces the downtime for our entire organization's environment.""In the three years that we have been using StarWind, the product has yet to cause us any problems.""Having the ability to migrate machines live in our environment was made possible by this software.""Starwind made it easy to deploy fully redundant, highly available storage at a low cost."

"The solution was connected to alternate storage. It provides great scalability and reliability.""The catalog of APIs for automation has been most valuable, although they are quite limited.""We've had no issues with scaling the solution.""The program is stable.""Saves us a lot of space in the data center.""We're doing a lot of VMware for IT so this solution is really valuable from a VMH point of view. We're trying to assist our customers mainly with management, because that's what they want. The most important aspects are ease of management, as well as ease of configuration, allowing them to attach additional nodes and resources for the applications.""Perfectly suits customers dealing with the combination of future storage needs and, at the same time, keeping up their computing power.""The support team responds quickly."

"Integration with vCenter WebClient services and Cisco UCS Ecosystem, as it gives a Single Pane Of Management which lowers administration-cost (improving TCO)."

Cons
"Being able to run StarWind vSAN on top of any free UNIX operating system to build a resilient iSCSI/FTP/SMB storage system would be useful.""An update caused a syncing issue and it took over a month to resolve it""For someone entering the IT sector with little knowledge of storage, iSCSI, and virtual disks, they might not find the GUI immediately obvious.""The documentation is good yet is still lacking in a few areas.""The platform needs to improve user management and the web console.""If there are domain controllers inside the cluster, there needs to be some sort of logic allowing them to boot independently so all the rest of the domain clients can gain the authority they need to come online.""The only way I can see this product needing improvement is the consultation level of the StarWind sales and engineers.""The number of different ways you can set it up can make it a little daunting."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"It would be great to get earlier access to beta builds because we have to develop providers on our own. The APIs and enablers for custom automation could also be improved.""Licensing restrictions can be frustrating.""Exporting data from the dashboard is not very user-friendly. It's just designed in a way that it's going to cover let's say 90%, 80%, of the end-users needs. If you need more sophisticated reporting it's not easy to have.""They should provide continuous support for data migration.""The solution needs to offer more documentation and educational materials.""I am not really impressed by the technical support of this solution.""Needs some more monitoring tools.""The installation is complex."

"Stability during installations/upgrades is a big issue."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
