Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"The most valuables features are the relatively short learning curve, and the automation capabilities provided through the BIML add-in for SSDT.""It's already very user-friendly and has a good dashboard.""There are many good features in this solution including the data fields, database integration, support for SQL views, and the lookups for matching information.""The most valuable features for our company are the flexibility and the quick turn around time in producing simple ETL solutions.""I have used most of the standard SQL features, but the ones that stand out are the Data Flows and Bulk Import.""It is easily scheduled and integrates well with SQL Server and SQL Server Agent jobs.""Its compatibility with Microsoft products has been very valuable to our company. It fits well within the architecture.""The simplicity of the solution is great. The solution also offers excellent integration."

More SSIS Pros »

"I think Talend is one of the easiest tools for faster implementation compared to other tools.""Talend Studio has the ability to connect to almost anything to integrate data from files, databases, web services, etc.""The basic tools are easy to pick up and understand.""They're very competitive in terms of performance, which is a good selling point. It has very rich features. It provides a very rich feature set in the application.""The most valuable feature is integration.""The features that I like the most are the simplicity of the interface, and the ability to quickly develop with a predefined component.""I like the way that you can use the context variables, and how you can work those context variables to give you values and settings for every development environment, such as PROD, TEST, and DEV."

Cons
"I would like to see more standard components out of the box, such as SFTP, and Data Compression components.""Sometimes when we want to publish to other types of databases it's not easy to publish to those databases. For example, the Jet Database Engine. Before the SSIS supported Jet Database Engine but nowadays it doesn't support the Jet Database Engine. We connect to many databases such as Access database, SparkPros databases and the other types of databases using Jet Database Engines now and SSIS now doesn't seem to support it in our databases.""The debugging could be improved because when it came to solving the errors that I've experienced in the past, I've had to look at the documentation for more information.""I come from a coding background and this tool is graphically based. Sometimes I think it's cumbersome to do mapping graphically. If there was a way to provide a simple script, it would be helpful and make it easier to use.""This solution needs full support for real-time processing.""Improving the login procedure would make our reporting easier on monitoring our ETL processes.""We're in the process of switching to Informatica, and we need to work out data lineage and data profiling and to improve the quality of our data. SSIS, however, is not that compatible with Informatica. We managed to connect it to Informatica Metadata Manager, but we don't get good lineage, so we have to redo all our ETLs using the Informatica process in order to accept the proper data lineage.""The interface could use improvement, as well as the administrative tools. Jobs fail from time to time for different reasons. It's not a problem with Microsoft, or SSIS itself. The problems are external, but to find the problems and analyze them it takes too much time."

More SSIS Cons »

"The stability is good, but the performance is slower when I work on a huge amount of data.""The documentation from version to version could be more accurate.""Once you get past the basic tools, it gets pretty complicated.""Including either XML or JSON in the next release would definitely be a good transformation. I'm not sure if Talend has that feature, but it's one of those requirements that we are working around and have to do some parsing of XML so this could make it easier.""Performance and speed could be improved.""They lack in memory capacity.""I would like to sync a project and do an upload from that current version, and then from GitLab, be able to download the latest one."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"This solution has provided an inexpensive tool, and it is easy to find experienced developers.""My advice is to look at what your configuration will be because most companies have their own deals with Microsoft.""This solution is included with the MSSQL server package.""t's incredibly cost effective, easy to learn the basics quickly (although like all ETL tools requires the traditional learning curve to get good at) and has an immense user base.""It would be beneficial if the solution had a less costly cloud offering."

"License renewal is on a yearly basis.""The pricing is a little higher than what I had expected, but it's comparable with I-PASS competitors."

There are two products I know about
* TimeXtender : Microsoft based, Transformation logic is quiet good and can easily be extended with T-SQL , Has a semantic layer that generates metat data for cubes . price approx 40K$, works with tables
. Attunity (Bought by Qlik) : technology agnostic , nice web interface , expensive > 100K€. Works with transaction logs

There are many other pure ETL tools
* ERWIN has a nice one ,

We have experiences only in Pentaho Data Integrator (open source competitor of the Oracle Data Integrator).
But OLAP exporting wasn't in our scope until now.

Depends upon the technologies being used. If you're using Oracle for both OLTP and OLAP then you'll get a lot of value from an Oracle solution.

The other question is how up to date do you want your OLAP DB to be? Goldengate is a good answer if you're looking to minimize latency, but it can be expensive. ODI is less expensive but better suited to bulkier data sets.  If an Oracle product wasn't the option I'd probably consider something like Informatica.

Hi Karoly, Thanks for your input. community: https://forums.pentaho.com/ is not allowing new registrations for new users. I guess they accept queries from customers only and not from any one. Do you know any other forum, community, SMEs contacts who can help on queries?

Hi Karoly,

Thanks for your response !!!
Is Pentaho Data Integrator available as freeware/open source tool? Does it come in basic, standard and enterprise editions flavors?

It integrates data from various heterogeneous systems like multiple variety of databases (SQL server, Oracle, DB2 etc), files (XML, XLS, CSV, text etc)? Targets can be any type of DB , file etc.?

What all flavors available like Basic, Standard, Enterprise editions? All editions are free/ open source?

Thanks,
Rajneesh

Overview
SSIS is a package is an organized collection of connections, control flow elements, data flow elements, event handlers, variables, parameters, and configurations, that you assemble using either the graphical design tools that SQL Server Integration Services provides, or build programmatically. You then save the completed package to SQL Server, the SSIS Package Store, or the file system, or you can deploy the ssISnoversion project to the SSIS server. The package is the unit of work that is retrieved, executed, and saved.
Talend offers robust data integration in an open and scalable architecture to maximize its value to your business. Simple, graphical tools and wizards get you up and running quickly with native code generation that streamlines development.
