We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Being able to upgrade machines and software during business operations just by switching nodes has been a huge improvement. We""With proactive support, StarWind deploys and configures the solution for you.""The redundancy of two identical nodes that can run alone allows us to have truly "no single point of failure" in our computing and primary storage infrastructure.""The most valuable aspect of StarWind is the all-in-one solution that they provide.""It is the perfect solution for hyper-convergence at a fair price. Our customers have Hyper-V and VMware environments, with Windows servers and Linux.""Product functionality and performance are wonderful.""Being able to log on to the GUI to see specific data and usage statistics, executing clones, starting and stopping VMs, etc., is great.""The solution has provided our company with a fully redundant virtual environment at half the cost of a traditional SAN implementation."

"The team behind it was very engaged and had the skills and ability to support a service provider.""Creating snapshots within seconds for big disks has helped our different migration projects since it allows us to perform them in a short period of time.""The two 10GE networks provide redundancy and increased performance as they serve as two separate networks doubling the throughput and doing multipathing and load balancing. We now have a high performance shared storage system which enables us to run on private cloud. Our previous system used bare-metal hardware, which provided high performance but inflexible management. Now we have best of both worlds, SSD-class performance with flexibility of a private cloud system.""The speed of the storage solution also allows us to provide service to applications that are very I/O intensive.""Performance, redundancy, scalability and cost-effectiveness. StorPool delivers superbly in all of these areas.""With StorPool we were able to build live failover on top of our LXC infrastructure. This allows us both to live-migrate containers between compute nodes without any downtime and, in case of an entire node suffering any type of failure, we can bring all containers back online within a minute on a spare compute node."

Cons
"The only area that surprised me had to do with the fact that each host runs a StarWind virtual machine used to maintain the health of the vSAN, which individually uses 24GB of memory per host. You should keep this in mind when determining the resources you will need when selecting hardware and components for your specific setup. If I knew that, I would have chosen to add more memory per host to make up for the use.""It would be nice if the software told you a new version was available and prompted you to do the upgrade to keep everything up to date.""The only critique I might have is that the support is overseas in Eastern Europe and, on occasion, there has been a language issue. But in general, they're as good as can be...""Although the setup documentation was very complete and succinct, I found StarWind documentation to be a bit sparse.""We need to be very cautious in following every step when updating the physical host. We must move over each VM and drain roles from the servers to ensure everything goes smoothly without interruptions. If this were a more automated process, this would be less taxing each time an upgrade is needed.""The only issues are when Hyper V itself has limitations and I'd love to see support or enhancement in the area of direct-attached GPU cards.""I'd like a better UI and some limitations on "breaking it."""One area for improvement of the solution is that I had to get Windows, which I really didn't want because of the extra maintenance or overhead, as well as viruses, etc. It's going to take time for them to get their Linux to that point. They already have Linux but it's not as mature and they don't really support it on HCAs. They have it for individuals who want to use it on their servers, but not on HCAs."

"Live and historical performance statistics would be useful, though my understanding is that this is on the way in a future release.""It would be good if, with next releases, StorPool provide a better GUI for monitoring and statistics. This would make our experience even better and complete.""he only place we feel they could improve is the time it takes to bring new features to production.""I have personally met with multiple Storpool engineers and spoke about different options and features. There are too many features that we don't know or use yet. My recommendation would be to promote the new features and give users different examples of how they can be used and how we can benefit from them.""At times we need to check the disks and do some minor operations. A friendlier user interface would be useful in such cases.""Monitoring and statistics UI is a bit clumsy."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "A desired feature or service would be the ability to have a hardware subscription plan that ensures routine hardware updates in conjunction with hyper-converged software."
  • "Its cost was reasonable."
  • "This was all completed at an affordable price point for an SMB, which was also a key element for an NPO."
  • "When I researched they came the most cost-effective."
  • "The other solutions we were looking at were priced much higher than this and they didn't necessarily have full redundancy... Nutanix and VxRail were in the final running... but it came down to our price point."
  • "I honestly feel that there's no one else in the market doing what they're doing for the price point that they're doing it at. That's why I asked them about investing in their company. I think that the options they're providing and the software that they have is sort of revolutionary for the price point... The total cost was $24,400."
  • "The Nutanix piece was about $45,000, getting close to $50,000 with all the licensing involved, whereas the StarWind was less than half of that, after Microsoft licensing and such."
  • "We looked at Nutanix and found it did almost the same thing but for more money. In fact, StarWind was nearly one-third of the price; it cost us £36,000. That includes five years of monitoring... The Nutanix was near enough £110,000 for relatively the same amount of performance and storage."

  • "It provides us with a significant reduction in TCO due to their pay-as-you-grow licensing model, which means we don’t have to pay upfront for hardware and licensing for capacity thStorPoolat we don’t yet need to use."
  • "StorPool's pricing and licensing model is very transparent. As always, one has to due his due diligence when choosing a product like distributed storage solutions."
  • "StorPool software is cost-effective and gives us a pricing advantage over our competitors."
