Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The solution is stable and the performance is good.""The solution is excellent at blocking spam.""The solution is "set and forget". You pay for it and everything is done for you.""Symantec’s spyware and malware signature database is very good compared to other products.""Symantec Messaging Gateway has a good GUI, and it is very powerful in detecting viruses and spam.""The setup is pretty simple.""The anti-malware and spam features are valuable.""Symantec Messaging Gateway is stable and scalable. Installation is easy, and the deployment and maintenance can be done by one administrative person."

"SpamTitan learned faster than I thought it was going to, based on other products that I've used. There was a lot more feedback. The other products are based on the users, but this one, with its AI, seems to produce tremendous improvements day-to-day. I told the teams it was going to take two to three weeks but, within a week, we had dropped the amount of spam that was getting through.""It has reduced the risk of getting viruses from emails by almost a hundred percent. We are giving services to hundreds of companies, and it makes our work a lot easier when SpamTitan is filtering threats.""It's catching things that might otherwise have gotten through in the past. That was when we were working with a site that didn't put emails through two antiviruses before they got to our system.""Overall, the intuitiveness of this product is pretty good.""Another good feature, related to geo-blocking, is the ability to specify exemptions. We discovered that some of our customers, even though they are located in Canada, have an Exchange Server sitting in Japan or in the Netherlands. It seems they have branches or their head office in other countries. Having this exception feature is helpful.""Another feature of SpamTitan that I like is the reporting. We are able to identify the users or accounts that have been attacked most. We can see information that shows us the sites that the user goes to, and that helps in launching an investigation of that user and how they use our resources.""I like the fact that SpamTitan filters out phishing and spoofing links. They call it AI-driven threat protection. Though I'm a highly educated, advanced computer user, I still like not having to pay attention to where the link is going. I can trust that SpamTitan will filter it out nine times out of 10.""The fact that it does exactly what it says on the box is what I find most valuable about SpamTitan. They've reduced our spam by about 99 percent."

Cons
"What's lacking when you compare it with Proofpoint and other threat protection solutions is that it does the basic stuff, but we need more advanced threat handling.""The solution takes up a lot of memory.""Sometimes the solution picks up false positive for viruses during scans.""The false positive submissions must be improved.""We've had issues in the past where the user finds spam, and Symantec does not recognize it as spam.""The documentation could have more detailed examples of how to use the product in various situations. As more companies shift to the cloud, they could better integrate the on-prem and cloud versions through an on-prem client.""Messaging Gateway's advanced malware detection could be improved.""The biggest problem is it's an on-prem product and we're trying to get out of having equipment in data centers."

More Symantec Messaging Gateway Cons →

"There is room for improvement in automation; better wizards for deployment, for example.""The only improvement that comes to mind is updates. We are technically on TitanHQ's private cloud. We are responsible for updating our platform when a new version comes out. I would personally prefer to have SpamTitan just notify me, and say, "At this specific time on this specific day, we will be upgrading you to the newest platform."""When in the control panel, the context menu that appears when you right-click on an email should present options for adding the sender to the whitelist or blocking them.""Some of the menus on the dashboard could be easier to navigate. It takes a little while to find things.""We had to do some stuff with eFax in order to get eFaxing to come through. Had we known that ahead of time, we could have had that ironed out before we went live. However, we just didn't realize it was going to interfere with it. After we implemented it, we realized it was interfering with some of our eFaxes, so we had to go figure out why""I would like to implement a secondary delivery pool for mass mailings, having an alternate pool for mass mailing lists since there is only a single mail queue with SpamTitan. For example, if 10,000 emails are being sent, then the queue will be large. Unfortunately, without a secondary delivery pool, legitimate emails will wait in the queue to be delivered to my email. Therefore, I would like to have two queues: one for everyday emails and another for mass mailings. Now, I have to decide whether to buy a second SpamTitan license just for this reason because I am very satisfied with the functionality of SpamTitan overall and don't want to use another sender's appliance for this.""There should probably be a little more explanation on why one day, the email from one company goes into quarantine, and the next day, it doesn't. To me, it is a little bit random at times.""If I had to actually find a negative, it would be the speed. I wish that the interface were faster. We have very fast internet, but there is definitely some sluggishness between pages on the interface. Does that deter me? No. I just wish it were quicker."

  • "The price of this solution is low. When you do purchase everything is included in the licensing cost."
  • "We are on a per-user or per-mailbox monthly subscription. We are happy with the price of the solution. When comparing it to other solutions it is much cheaper."
  • "The cluster was an additional cost. We had to get some more licenses to get to that level. It's well worth it because it means peace of mind for everyone."
  • "Compared to all of the others, including the solution we used previously, SpamTitan is cheaper."
  • "The price is good by today's standards. You actually get what you pay for."
  • "The price was great compared to other solutions that we looked at the time."
  • "Our pricing has pretty much stayed somewhat the same. Sure, there has been an increase or two that keeps up with inflation, but that is everybody. When we switched from AppRiver to SpamTitan, we saved about 20%. That is $1,000 to $2,000 a month. We went to SpamTitan and WebTitan. It was $1,000 savings a month for SpamTitan and another $1,500 a month savings for WebTitan."
  • "It is very good. We actually ended up saving money from our previous solution."

    Reviews from Real Users

The solution saves employees' time. Many of our faculty are physicians who don't have much time to check their emails, especially if they need to scroll through and delete spam mail, which can hide important messages. A cleaner inbox is easier to use and saves time, probably an hour a week per user. That might not sound like much, but we had physicians with inboxes so full of spam they stopped checking their emails, which is no longer the case. Our catch rate is up significantly, and our false positives have dropped considerably, saving the end user time.” - A PeerSpot user who is a DevOps Director at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics

“I can't tell you the number of times that their web interface has saved me. I had server issues but I still needed to be able to look at what emails I would have received if my email server had been working correctly. SpamTitan has a reporting functionality that showed me what emails would have been sent. I could actually see the content of those emails. For me, several times, that has been a real lifesaver.” - Walter H., An Enterprise Architect at Unified System Solutions, Ltd.

“Its algorithms are doing a very good job in terms of the false positive rate. We have some regular mail that gets caught and some spam mail that gets through, but they're just balancing the line between spam and regular mail. We do catch a lot of spam, the amount of spam on an average day ranges from 65-85%. The Link Lock also reduces the risk when clicking on a link in an email, it removes a lot of concern about harmful links.” - A PeerSpot user who is a Cloud & Infrastructure consultant at a tech services company.
