We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
It's a complete software that can protect all the main applications. Perhaps that's the feature I like most. The integration with the NetApp and other apps is also very nice. It's very stable. We are using a KVM system in our cloud, and this solution works very well with it.It's the leader in backup and archiving. It is much more scalable and flexible than everything else in the market. In the VM, we have Live Recovery, Live Mount, and Live Sync.Global deduplication and the indexing of the data object are the most valuable features. It saves costs on the product side by doing compression and deduplication. It will help you and make your life easy to reach the data that you need within the minimum downtime when it's required. It's an enterprise product. It's a stable product. We have good support. Almost all databases are in the scope.

The most valuable feature is the instant restore option. The user interface is good. What I find most valuable about this solution, is that the user experience is very simple. The technical support is good. The really amazing feature about Veeam Agent is that when you're using the central deployment model, you can actually use the instant VM recovery feature, which is really a pain point that I find some days. The solution is very user-friendly and has an easy to use interface. We can manage it easily. It allows for a simple backup. The initial setup was straightforward. It's not complicated. It takes around half an hour to implement, but it depends on the performance of the server that you are installing the backup software on.It's most compatible with VMware. It can restore single files instead of having to restore the whole machine, once again leading to savings for the company.

The most valuable feature is the ability, from a console, to manage the different computers to be backed up.I am very pleased with the compression, especially with some of the larger SQL databases that need backup. The amount of compression is impressive. The initial setup is easy and very nice. The network solution is the most important feature, because we have our own backup server and are doing file backups for our customers. The most important features are the backup and the availability of the Universal Explorer. The in-transit compression is great. The agentless backups are the big selling point on this, as well as being able to send out across sites so that I can do a restore at either of our two locations. We are now using it 24/7 because it is serving as an online backup, and very soon, the DR will activated on the product. We invest in the backup so the continuity of the data is not affected.

Cons
I think the one thing that could be improved is the customer experience. The interface should be more user friendly. The back of virtual machines needs improvement. I know they're working on it. They're always doing new things but I think they still have a little bit more to do.This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it.Its competitor, Veeam, includes backup and replication in the same product. I don't know if Commvault has it or not, but they should if they don't.Support for this product needs to be improved because I have seen a couple of cases where it is taking more than the required time to solve issues. We previously had difficulty with the support being foreign. The setup is not that straightforward or easy. Even the documentation is not generic or public like other products. You have to be a partner or you have to have a specific account and download it from the vendor themselves. You need quite a lot of human resources to maintain a Commvault environment, to keep it operational. Also, it would be nice to if there were an easier way set up some Commvault components.

We are currently waiting for the continuous backup process.I would like to be able to install Veeam directly to Linux instead of having to go through a Windows server. In the next version, I would like to see an increase in the locations online. I have found that other products have good pickup location. It would be much better if more applications were supported on the Linux side. For example, their agent for Windows not only can back up the Windows machine, but it can also back up Active Directory for granular restore, SQL servers, Exchange, Oracle, SharePoint, etc. When it comes to Linux, only Oracle databases are supported. There are workarounds, though. In terms of the physical environment, I'd like them to integrate it with other kinds of solutions. We don't just work with Microsoft or Linux, but other kinds of infrastructure data as well. It's scalable, but it's not scalable on every platform.Scalability, if you are talking about Linux, is good. However, if you need to backup more types of solutions or Unix systems, like HP/UX, AIX, etc., it's not compatible. It could use deduplication features.

I have had issues where it was working and then it stopped and I had to diagnose what had changed or gone wrong to get it back up.The reporting can use some improvement. I still use the old StoreGrid Cloud while I'm migrating the rest of my clients over. I am able to export all of my clients' usage for the month, which I then import into my billing program. It helps me speed up the billing process. Also, I can generate a report that gives me statuses of everyone's backup, which I don't get from Vembu Backup Online either. I would like to have something similar where I can export everyone's usage at any time for all their backups, so I can use that to import them to my billing program. We have not been able to move our backups from one drive to another one. We can only create a storage pool. However, if we want to change a drive, it is not possible to delete one drive as long there is data on it. For this, we have to call the support. While they can solve this, it is not out-of-the-box.The deduplication could be better. It doesn't give the level of deduplication that I would get with a product that's stored in a more standard file format. I would prefer to be able to use a non-deduplicated store on a third-party deduplicated medium. The only place where I would really want to see improvement, out the gate, is more granular scheduling... If I want to do an offset or to only do two backups on Friday and Saturday - versus whole hourly incrementals during the week - I don't have that granularity right now.We are still exploring its features, but we want to see more features that we desire over time.In the beginning, when we had some hiccups, I would chalk that up more to a learning curve for the product. One thing we have noticed is that we get various error messages in the Vembu console, but sometimes we, as the user, cannot remove those error messages. I have to chat with support and they have to log in to remove them.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The price could perhaps be lower as well.In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually.Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair.

The costing is very competitive. The solution is rather expensive and I think the price is too high. It's a subscription based license, which is started on a yearly basis. Currently the licensing is split between three editions: standard, enterprise, and enterprise plus. As long as you check the comparison between the additions and make sure that you have what you need, there are no extra costs with Veeam.Licensing costs are $300,000 USD yearly, and we pay for three years at a time.

The pricing is pretty reasonable. The pricing is reasonable. I am okay with it.The return of investment was very fast, within half a year. The best thing about the product is the license management. It is a true managed service provider solution. It has a good price. The licensing is quite flexible, which is one of the most important things for us.The high availability is too expensive for our customers. The pricing and licensing structure are spot on. I don't think there's anything out there in the market that does either the licensing structure or the pricing structure better. The subscription model that we're signed up for is very good. The only thing that is something of a sticking point is the fact that you can't do PO-based licensing. It's all just credit card. The pricing could have been cheaper.
