We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
It most valuable features are seeding and faster backups over small links.Veeam replication gives migration tools/options for VMware.I enjoy the ability to quickly search for VMs through the Veeam console. It has helped us to protect our IP address and critical information.Features with the most value are Instant VM Recovery, SQL Explorer and Exchange Explorer. Before Veeam, we had backup infrastructure sprawl. Veeam was able to reduce our overall backup windows while reducing our dedicated backup infrastructure.Vendor integration for many of the enterprise features have allowed for us to have greater performance from our storage vendors further improving on our commitments to protect our clients' data.Replication and restore object in Exchange boxes with possibility to select part of Microsoft directory.

Failover using Zerto is simply a one-button click, and it does everything else in restoring the VMs at a different datacenter (recovery site).Zerto is an excellent solution for cloud-based environments, but for DIY clients who have another site to recover their systems it also works well. The replication being log-based is awesome. You can set the number of days a VM can be rolled back in case of corruption or virus infection.Since the log files are continuously transmitted, the granularity of restores is amazing.Files can also be extracted from the VMDK at the remote site even when the VM is off.A new feature is the One-To-Many VPG allowing a VM to be replicated at up to three different locations, including local.VMware VM replication over narrow WAN bandwidth.

Cons
It could use DR features similar to Zerto. The remote SQL server has had multiple sizing issues within the logs and SQL backup space and sharing with other database apps. The product is missing some commonsense features and tools for an enterprise backup recovery product,The only issue on which we would like to see for improvement would be, potentially, the ability to do some different things with recovery, like faster recovery onsite.Physical backup is always where room for improvement could be but Veeam has always stated they are not going in that direction.Multithreading of health check process: This can take too much time to process on large jobs and/or large VMs.Additional executive summary reports for the entire infrastructure would be a nice to have. One challenge that we have encountered was on the long-term retention of data. Be sure to look into a dedicated deduplication appliance.

Adding or changing VPGs (Virtual Protection Groups) may require restarting replication. An integrated encryption would allow for faster initial install and connection to the remote cloud site.Their offsite backup is a bit clunky, but it will probably improve. It needs to support more public cloud. It works only for a virtual platform, it does not support bare metal. The only issue that I observed was that depending on the number of virtual machines that are being replicated, you will have to provision the appropriate bandwidth for the link that the replicated systems will traverse.Migration of complex VMware and Hyper-V solution. Using Zerto to replicate to azure and S3.I would like to see a couple of details regarding awareness of VM events coming outside of ZVR.

Pricing and Cost Advice
Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions. We have increased our scalability while being able to free up senior resources from recovery activities. I estimate our overall savings to about $20,000 per year.I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive. The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy.Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along. The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment.Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive. The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better.

It's a little bit expensive.Licensing is VM based so you can buy packages or single VM. Price is not low but the power of application is high, so you will get your money back.Licensing is based on the number of VMs to replicate. The first thing should be to get the number of VMs to replicate based on your business needs.Zerto’s licensing model has changed a bit over the last year and they are in alignment with others. It is pretty simple and more economical.Pricing depends on your future growth. Start small and then scale up.
