Quotes From Members Comparing Veeam Backup & Replication vs. Zerto Virtual Replication

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Before Veeam, we had backup infrastructure sprawl. Veeam was able to reduce our overall backup windows while reducing our dedicated backup infrastructure.Vendor integration for many of the enterprise features have allowed for us to have greater performance from our storage vendors further improving on our commitments to protect our clients' data.It is a good solution for backups and reporting.Features with the most value are Instant VM Recovery, SQL Explorer and Exchange Explorer. It is a good product, in regards to performance, as well as data protection.Replication is the most valuable feature. The ntegration of physical agents with our cloud connect service is positive. It most valuable features are seeding and faster backups over small links.

During a failover to a DR site, Zerto can automatically change the IP address of servers. With Zerto, we were able to replicate our virtual servers to a remote DR site across a WAN connection. The initial setup was very straightforward and easy. We were able to start replication within minutes of the initial setup.Journaling allows us to leverage Zerto's journal for sub-minute recoveries, instead of having to wait for the storage array to replicate.Failover using Zerto is simply a one-button click, and it does everything else in restoring the VMs at a different datacenter (recovery site).Zerto is an excellent solution for cloud-based environments, but for DIY clients who have another site to recover their systems it also works well. The replication being log-based is awesome. You can set the number of days a VM can be rolled back in case of corruption or virus infection.

Cons
Multithreading of health check process: This can take too much time to process on large jobs and/or large VMs.Additional executive summary reports for the entire infrastructure would be a nice to have. One challenge that we have encountered was on the long-term retention of data. Be sure to look into a dedicated deduplication appliance. The tech support needs improvement.Physical backup is always where room for improvement could be but Veeam has always stated they are not going in that direction. In Linux, I suggest you backup for a PostgreSQL database.Cross-hypervisor replication can be improved.Recovery speed is slow. Full recovery on large machines (1TB+) takes too long

I would like them to add a VM host replication option. Being able to replicate host configuration between sites would be a huge benefit. The full site recovery is not up to SRM standards. It is difficult to manage failing over between sites if you are at the site that was impacted.Adding or changing VPGs (Virtual Protection Groups) may require restarting replication. An integrated encryption would allow for faster initial install and connection to the remote cloud site.Their offsite backup is a bit clunky, but it will probably improve. It needs to support more public cloud. It works only for a virtual platform, it does not support bare metal.

Pricing and Cost Advice
We have increased our scalability while being able to free up senior resources from recovery activities. I estimate our overall savings to about $20,000 per year.I would suggest to others that they buy the full license when purchasing this solution.Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions.I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive. The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy.Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along. The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment.Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive.

We believe the pricing, setup costs, and licensing are easy to understand. The pricing seems very reasonable. It's a little bit expensive.Licensing is VM based so you can buy packages or single VM. Price is not low but the power of application is high, so you will get your money back.Licensing is based on the number of VMs to replicate. The first thing should be to get the number of VMs to replicate based on your business needs.Zerto’s licensing model has changed a bit over the last year and they are in alignment with others. It is pretty simple and more economical.Pricing depends on your future growth. Start small and then scale up.
