We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
The stability and restore options on the solution are very good. While there are some complexities, Veeam tries to keep the product simple and offers a good knowledge base. It's quite structured, so you can easily take one subject and learn about it simply by reading through the documentation. The solution is already far more advanced than our customers require. It offers advanced scripting and automation pre-testing to support the custom library and custom tasks. The deployment is quite simple. Users are generally happy because of the familiarity they have with the features. The solution offers good transparency for the end-user.The most valuable features are the fast replication and recovery of data. The administration and management integrate with multiple solutions, not just with one or two environments, even if they're not VMware products.

It is incredibly granular and I really appreciate that. The fact that we are able to test the failover of live systems during regular hours is invaluable to our organization. We are in the process of switching over our production data center and Zerto has been a true time-saver that has cost us zero downtime. The most valuable feature of Zerto is its overall flexibility, where it can be used for standard DR or you can also use it for server migrations, data center consolidations, etc.We use to use VMware replication appliances to attempt to replicate our VMs to remote locations and servers, but Zerto's one-to-many replication options with deduplication have made the process much simpler without having to constantly worry about the versions of each driver. The ease of failover and test environments has proven invaluable.I really like how you can test the failover as often as you need. The ability to perform DR testing to ensure data integrity is critical.

Cons
We need the solution to offer IT storage. The solution should allow for interfacing with other public cloud vendors. They could work to build something around that concept. The pricing is much higher than what our clients expect it to be.It would be helpful if the enterprise edition was more complete. It's not as complete as the enterprise plus edition is. For instance, in the enterprise version, we can only use one accelerator with the cloud provider. It means if I have my Cloud Connect, I cannot connect another site of mine with another cloud connect and use an accelerator of Veeam. They should change this. The security of encrypted data could be better. We were interested in investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in VMware. VMware right now is one of the biggest solutions in the world, in terms of the IT environment. But for Cloud Connect it's not. I think they need the cloud version to reach more customers, to enable the cloud version to be used by more people.

It would also be nice if they could find a way to make it where one VM does not impact the entire journal history of the VPG.The GUI could be streamlined a bit more to enhance the administrative tasks. The setup process is time-consuming.I wouldn't mind seeing Zerto sold at a cheaper price point, although the cost is comparable to VMware SRM.The number one thing we have found we would like changed so far is the cost per VM. It would be great to get that pricing reduced.I would like to see better notifications when the sync is off for an extended length of time.I think Zerto could do better with size planning because it would be nice to analyze a server for a week and give an estimate on sizing the Journal.Increased granularity in how long to keep the journal would be nice.

Pricing and Cost Advice

I would suggest getting a dedicated, well-informed rep.Zerto is not cheap but is an invaluable asset. You need to figure out how many critical servers and applications you have in your environment so you will know how many Zerto licenses to buy.The cost per VM is a bit high. The cost is not dirt cheap but also is not terrible. We found that in an event that was massive enough to cause an entire cluster to go offline we would be happy with our core services up and running. You are getting what you pay for, as this is a solution that requires minimal management after it is configured. While we find the twenty-five VM license somewhat inflexible, the actual setup costs are minimal as the product is so easy to install.
