Boomi AtomSphere Integration Other Advice

RA
Senior Manager, Integration Operation at ManpowerGroup

For Boomi, if your integration scope and work are limited, you can go with it. But for complex landscapes with multiple systems and close transaction monitoring, especially in finance or insurance, then you should look for more futuristic tools.

We've worked with many integration tools. For Boomi specifically, I'd rate it a six out of ten.

In my company, we use many video conferencing tools. I have seen that in video conferencing tools, the counterparts are very different. I have experience with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Tencent Meeting.

I was not deeply involved in Boomi AtomSphere Integration since it was already up and running when I joined my company's project. I could look back in the past to find out the product's history, and that is the most I can do. I know what the product is used for, but I can't go too much into the details.

Whether I would recommend the product or not actually depends on what a customer wants to achieve with the solution while also considering factors like the experience of the integration team and the kind of support a customer has in their company. It is not just about the technology but also the skills of a company or the partners with whom a company has relations.

Compared to Boomi AtomSphere Integration, there are easier products around, like MuleSoft or Jitterbit. I see MuleSoft or Jitterbit evolving since they have established a lot of integrations, depending on the markets and other things. From my perspective, Jitterbit was easier to operate and set up, while MuleSoft tried to simplify their product a lot when compared to Boomi AtomSphere Integration. MuleSoft started off as a very complex product, but now it's getting easier and easier, and MuleSoft now has a lite version. I didn't hear anything about Boomi AtomSphere Integration, especially in terms of major product improvements, which I know about.

I rate the overall tool a six out of ten.

I think it's important to find a good partner because there's always going to be new technology you'll want to implement, and working with a partner that knows how to integrate new systems is very helpful. The expertise is more about the things that need integrating on top of Boomi. If you only know Boomi and not how things work on the SAP side, you're only covered for around 60% of the work needed.

I rate this solution eight out of 10.

I'm just a customer and an end-user.

I would advise potential new users that they need to have some deep expertise on the Boomi platform to be able to successfully do what they want to do with it.

Out of ten, I'd rate the solution at a seven. It does the job well and it's robust, however, it is needlessly overcomplicated, and the documentation could be better.

The platform is good. I recommend it to others. I advise others to go for it if the use case is heavy. They should prefer using other tools if there are just a few connections. The platform is not consumption-dependent but connector dependent.

I rate it an eight out of ten.

This solution is made for large companies. Smaller organizations don't use these kinds of middleware applications because AtomSphere is used to integrate between large products like SAP and Salesforce.

My advice to anybody who is implementing this solution is to have a very good FDD. The functional description of the business processes should be very well described before starting this kind of project.

Overall, this is a very good product.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Self Employed/Independent at a consultancy

I worked at a Dell Boomi implementation partner. A large part of the in-house team of integration consultants who work with the customers have been certified upfront to guarantee a level of quality in delivery.

If an organization wants to implement and support the integration platform with their own development staff, I would advise them to partner up with a Dell Boomi partner for best practices and to receive training.

When selecting a vendor team, my advice would be to have a formal RFI/RFP and to have a Proof of Concept (PoC) in place for the short list based on customer specific use cases.

Secondly, I would base a final decision/selection on the ‘organizational fit’ between the organization in question and a possible implementation partner. How much the partner can unburden an organization in this field, as the partner chosen should be the expert, is also important. Not only is qualitative and on-time delivery key, but also support.

Additionally, I would look for a partner with a proven track record of support.

In both cases, on-site reference visits can help to get additional insight in the product and a possible implementation partner.

Besides the advice on partnering up with an official Dell Boomi partner, it is good to know that by using the very visual and mature IDE, non-IT minded and skilled people can also learn the platform rather quickly.

We have several integration trainees who are on-boarding the platform and have no knowledge, background, nor experience in IT. This seems in line with, and a confirmation of, the ‘citizen developer’ idea.

The platform is offered standard as an iPaaS on the Dell cloud platform. I am not aware enough of the capabilities of this cloud platform. Considering AWS as an option for a private cloud for hosting seems logical.

OM
Digital Challenger at a tech services company with self employed

On a scale from one to ten where one is the worst and ten is the best, I would rate Dell Boomi AtomSphere as an eight.

What would make it better from my perspective is not just a question of features. There is actually a problem in that market, and that is offering a tool that a company can use by themself without the help of a local partner. I think that is where Boomi as a tool might be just a bit too complex. On the other hand that is also the power of it because the complexity allows you to do more complex integrations. The nice thing is that it is not a case where you have to ask your external partner or technical person to do everything for you. It is really a tool that you can learn to use yourself. I think the point is to be sure you have enough qualified partners and resources locally who can help you when you need it. There I see that Boomi could be a problem for some people depending on location. Because I'm speaking now for Belgium and the Netherlands, in our region it is okay. It can be better, but it is okay.

That is a very big point against Jitterbit. Jitterbit has almost no partners and zero in Belgium. At least not certified partners. That makes it a bit harder to get local support. And I know that for my typical customers — companies that would have from 50 to 1,000 users — that they like to have a local person who can come and coach and help and train, and then also design. In the end, the client wants to do the things themselves, but they want someone to help them to start up. That help is something they prefer in their local, native language and in their local offices. That is something that Boomi provides, even though they could be better in the partner landscape. But for Jitterbit, it is actually non-existent in Belgium. It could be much worse and much more of a problem elsewhere.

There is a roadmap that I saw and it looks very good for the future development of the API, so I have the feeling that Boomi will have the API management issues fairly under control. They can always improve the number and type of connectors that they have for the integrations. What you typically see is that products have various types of connectors in e-class integration at the surface. You have tools that are very focused on sales and marketing, integrating things like your Facebook advertisements, CRM and your leads, and other kinds of integrations. That is not really where Boomi is currently positioned as a big player. There are other companies and products that do those things better.

Then there are other tools that are for really big enterprises or complex systems, and these are very expensive solutions. That is also not where Boomi is positioned. Boomi is mainly focusing on integrating a lot of midsize business databases, CRM systems, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and things of that sort. They do that very well. But they might want to focus also a bit more on social media and that kind of marketing tool to expand their market base. Maybe not doing that is a strategic choice. But I know that they have a lot of funding from Dell — much more funding than Jitterbit has. They must easily have ten times the funding. They have to use it to improve the product compared to the competition.

So basically in the next releases, they could just improve on the partner landscape, the API management model, and maybe add more features for versatility to do more than they do now.

We're a partner with Dell EMC.

We use the on-premises solution because of storage. In Turkey, the cloud is not available for the most part. Our customers are specifically finance organizations, and they are not allowed to use the cloud, due to country-wide regulations. Most of our implementations are on-premises.

We're using the latest version to test in other environments. It's been good so far.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten. For what I've seen in the live environment, it's good. However, I'm reserving a few points to see how it goes as I learn the system.
