Domo Previous Solutions
We had Tableau. However, the problem with Tableau is it was part of the corporate team, and you had to wait a long time to get at least the way they set it up, where you had to make a request to get your data into the data warehouse. Then, it had to get loaded and cleaned and architected and then approved and pushed out to the production instance. You could start to run your reports after that. They might have to structure it so we just gave up on Tableau since it was such a heavy enterprise system, the way that the one company was using it.
That's the reason why the chief technical officer for our division brought in Domo, as it was a rapid solution that users could get in there, and analysts could start working right away and running reports and analyzing data. That's the only comparison I have. We were a Microsoft shop, and I don't know why we didn't consider Power BI. However, Smartsheet was the tool that was being used, so it didn't really come up as an option. My guess is if I go to my next Microsoft shop, I'll use Power BI instead of Domo since it's probably already in-house and cheaper, and it's pretty flexible and fast.
A company that I used to work for switched over to Power BI.

The vast majority of people in our company who are using Domo now were using spreadsheets and pivot tables. The more sophisticated ones might have been using Access databases. As a corporation, the official tool selected previously was Yellowfin. It never really launched successfully. Yellowfin is a good tool, but it was a case where it went through our IT department but they didn't have the business focus or the right resources to dedicate to it. I think they're doing a Yellowfin 2.0 for some of the standard, global financials, but in general, it wasn't as easy to use and it would have significantly increased our dependency on our IT group. We wouldn't be anywhere near where we're at right now if we went with Yellowfin.
Just about all of these tools are decent, and they are a quantum leap from spreadsheets and pivot tables. We picked Domo because it was scalable, easy-to-roll-out, and did not burden IT. It has also been easy to create additional content and it's been effortless to maintain because it's software as a service.

We previously used Tableau. We shifted to Domo because Tableau was getting expensive and the features that we get in Domo are what you get in Tableau.

We had a custom tool. It was proprietary and it wasn't that great. It was mostly scraping the data and pasting into an Excel-style sheet in the website. I wouldn't say it was a business intelligence tool at all. Rather, it just showed you flat numbers for reports.
The CEO brought Domo in. He saw that we were growing and he thought it was an interesting tool. He showed it to us, we sampled it. We used it for a few demos and we decided to go with it because there wasn't anything else that gave you the cloud space without charging you for it. They're really good about that. You can take up as much space as you want for data and they don't charge you for it.
We needed something more versatile than what we had and something that was managed on the cloud that we didn't have to touch too much. They were able to provide that for us.

We used Tableau prior to using Domo. It was because of the organization and licensing that we switched to Domo.

I received a presentation of up-and-coming types of software and in the business intelligence category there was one slide on Domo. I went to their website and I looked at their demo. I said, "Holy smokes, this is what I need." It wasn't like I was looking for a solution. I just found Domo, and realized, "Okay. This can change my business."
Back then, we were a two-person company. I went to my board and said, "I'm going to spend $50,000 on this business intelligence tool," and they looked at me like, "You're crazy. Have you lost your mind?" And I said, "No, no. Trust me. This is going to be good." So we bought it. It wasn't sold to me.
We were thinking of building our own CRM that would be part of our own applications, a backend to our own systems. But we skipped that when we took on Domo.

We were using Excel prior to Domo.
All the organization's data is really important. With data you can measure how you are performing. The challenges in using Excel were, number one, integrity. Maintaining extra spreadsheets over time is really hard. Gathering and updating the data is really hard. Second, of course, is that there is a lot of manual work in Excel, unless you have someone trained to do queries or Visual Basic macros. That can help speed up the reports, but it may take time, again, to develop queries and programming for Excel. The driver for our switch to Domo was to speed things up and be able to deliver reports on time, accurately, and more reliably when compared with Excel.

View full review »I've worked with many of the BI tools out there, and while I'd say every organization has specific needs, I've never seen user adoption happen so quickly. It's been amazing. Domo was the right fit for what was needed at my current organization. The next company may need something else for different reasons, but Domo has been so successful that I would recommend giving it a look.
We also still use SSRS.

In the first year, when I joined the organization, I was introduced to Domo. Prior to that I had experience with Tableau. When I started diving into the details of Domo, I got to know it and found it has the best GUI. And it already has an ETL tool embedded in it, for extract, transform, and load. That was not available in the other tool I used.
Traditionally, things were done with Excel, but I don't think it is quick enough to turn things around for our clients.
View full review »Yes, I have used Excel, SSRS and Tableau for BI deployments and would do so again before ever deploying Domo. The sales team sold a non-technical executive on the concept of being able to chat about the data, which is a useless, gimmicky feature at best, since now your employees have to look an additional place besides email and IM for prior threads.
