Avamar has long been the best in its class, but that's changing as new solutions emerge. However, Dell has traditionally been a leader in deduplication and compression. Avamar enabled us to shift data from on-premise local appliances to data centers and multi-tenant infrastructure. That's a powerful feature. because customers can back up to the cloud without upgrading o high-capacity links or congesting their backups.

Another valuable feature is Avamar's support for endpoints and workstations. Businesses want to back up their company laptops, and they can't get that functionality from many solutions. Avamar can provide clients a multi-tenant portal, which isn't something other solutions can do.

The Dell Avamar tool is easy to configure and highly reliable for backup. It requires little maintenance, not like Commvault. Commvault has a very tough UI and requires much more team effort to configure and install on both the server and client ends. Avamar is a simple and straightforward backup system. The backup performance is also good. There is no resource pressure on the clients during backup. The duplication feature is precious for reducing backup time.

Every product is good and bad, but its claim to fame is that it is scalable. We're doing more than 3,000 VMs. Every single night a complete image backup to disks and replication are easily done in under four hours.

It is stable, and it ties very well with VMware API. If you've got VMware in-house, it is a very solid product.

Avamar is a very effective product when it comes to protecting the virtualization system and end points. Data Protection Suite has three recovery and backup protection solutions and Avamar is one of them. It's a very effective product and can be used for replication and high-end enterprise applications. The solution doesn't require a specific backup admin in the environment, every application admin will perform their own backup and data protection process. It's very easy to use.

Dell transformed disk-based backups. Basically, we moved from tape to disk-based backups. We moved from IBM PSM on tape, to Dell-based backups using an appliance. These appliances are purpose-built backup appliances. Avamar and DataDomain are both purpose-built and they are extremely popular — soon to be number one in the backup appliance market. Avamar is associated with compliance, and DataDomain is more of our target. They are extremely reliable and scalable — they provide the best de-duplication on the market. They are very easy to use, set up, and manage.

Graphically, it's very user interactive. It's got a very nice interface. Compared to NetWorker, although Avamar is more user-friendly, it lacks support for certain plugins, like SAP HANA, for example. In this particular project that I'm working on, they need to back up SAP HANA but Avamar does not support that. Also, regarding compliance, they need to tape out. Avamar does not support that out of the box.

We are talking about a complete end-to-end solution which comes with its own hardware storage to back up the data on tape-less. It should be on desk and desks solution, which comes with Power Protect and is called data domain. It offers a very small footprint for long term, backup retention, in the realm of 55 times a single duplication ratio. This means that if a person backs up something on one, he will have one petabyte of storage, which can store up to five petabyte of backup copies. This combination makes Dell EMC one of the most perfect solutions available.

Dell EMC Avamar has many valuable features. It's very stable and it's easy to manage. It can be used instead of NetBackup or HP Data Protector backup.

Customers like it exactly like it is. They don't want new features from Avamar. Dell EMC is linked appropriately to VMware and they can implement some mechanisms from VMware more deeply than other vendors. This is one of the keys with Avamar.

The implementation is very simple. And, of course, EMC has a complex dashboard that can integrate all their backup solutions for the clients. They can use this software tool for backup and another one for disaster recovery and they don't need a complex dashboard.

Everything is pretty simple in this product.

It's based on HTML5 which allows for dashboards to have the maximum integration. It is up to date technology.

It also allows you to make a robot backup from a remote site to a central site with a very good compression

I am impressed by the ease of troubleshooting due to the internal database. You can get a lot of information from the backup jobs and that is very useful. For example, the program has a very nice importer called Clientele Activity.

Sometimes when you run backups for products, you will get the information about the backups - some successful some unsuccessful. You also often get information about some clients who don't run any data backups. So from a troubleshooting point of view, it offers valuable information that you can work on.
