Dell ECS Previous Solutions

I have experience with Centera, which is also a Dell product but the old one. That's also an object storage kind of solution, but that's an absolute technology now. I know of the technology on the cloud as well, like the NetApp StorageGRID, which is the same technology as the object storage.

I have used NetApp previously, and Dell ECS is a better solution.

My company evaluated file storage and object storage products from Pure Storage before Dell ECS.

My company chose to work with Dell ECS since, with Pure Storage, it is very challenging to get resources capability-wise. Dell ECS was slightly cheaper than Pure Storage.

We worked with the EMC Centera product previously. Dell EMC announced the end of life of the Centera assistance, so we changed to ECS.

I've been working with storage for 20 or 30 years or something like that. I've been with IBM, NetApp, and other EMC products before Dell. I've had experience with HPE, 3PARs, and Nimble. I've used pretty much every storage product on the market.

The difference depends on basically the customer and what they have from the beginning. Each product has its positive attributes. It depends on what the customers are going to do with it. We have other archive products that are at least as good as the ECS.

We did use a different solution previously. It was an HP product. The solution was older and we didn't see a new version that met our needs, so we switched over to Dell, which had a very good reputation and price.

I have some experience with HDS HCP and right now I prefer using this because of complementing solutions (HCP Anywhere version 3, HDI). In my opinion, HDS in Germany will have a lead over the other vendors (DELL EMC, NetApp, IBM, HPE).

We wanted to know about new solutions for storage so we read about the performance. We had more and more servers on the front-end. We needed to scale out, to easily scale out our storage solution.

Our most important criteria when selecting a vendor are that they provide local service - installation service, after-sales service, replacement service, and the response time. Also, we need a new technology that can scale out our storage.

I have experience with mixed-vendor solutions. For example, with Cisco, they sell the S-Series Storage Servers and you can use this hardware with software from another vendor. However, with a multivendor system, you can have trouble with interoperability between hardware and software.

The other problem with a multivendor solution is that you don't have packages that are tested for performance, so you don't know what to expect. In this cloud-based configuration, you have a product that is fully tested. Even if the performance is less than you hoped then you at least know what to expect in advance of implementing it. When we sell it to our customers, they are fully aware of what they are buying.

With a Cisco solution, you have more control over what you are purchasing. You can choose the amount of memory and cache, for example. The problem is that you aren't sure how much processing power you will need to get the results that you want. This is because they do not test the specific hardware and software bundle. With EMC, you have a tool that is guaranteed to work as marketed.
