Dell NetWorker Valuable Features

The solution only backs up change blocks. So, the backups are skinny, and we can revert our VM. If we did a Windows patch on a VM and the VM didn’t boot, we can restore our change blocks instead of restoring the whole VM. It takes minutes. Anybody could drive the GUI. We don't have to be a backup and storage person to use the product. It can be done quickly. It is its biggest value.

In Dell NetWorker, it is very simple to back up VMs. Finally, the backup of VMC is working reliably and is simple. We are also backing up to data domains, which are well integrated with NetWorker.

Additionally, we are backing up to tape. Everything works fine. There is mutual compatibility so that we can move backups and clone backups from data domains to tape. It's great. Also, we are using a cloud tier to offload backups on Data Domain 6800s.

The standout feature of Dell NetWorker is its expertise in handling our VMware environment. It makes the whole backup process for virtual servers, especially in large VMware setups like ours, a breeze. The proxy setup in the VMware part is super handy. Another great feature is Client Direct, which lets our clients send backup data directly to Data Domain or backup storage. This is a big win as it skips the network traffic, making backups smoother and more efficient.

The most valuable feature of the solution is a function in Dell NetWorker that works if the data that you are supposed to restore is resilient. If the data you want to restore is incomplete, then it has some functionality that will restore everything that is okay and skip the part that is not okay, so you get almost everything back.

With NetWorker, I'm still trying to use it more now, as I wasn't so much in the past.

I like how easily I am able to recognize the labels, the barcodes on the tape. With NetWorker, once you know your tapes and you have your record of them, you should be able to identify them easily.

The updated graphical interface is better than it used to be.

The initial setup is very straightforward.

The solution is very stable.

We find the product to be scalable.

The performance is improving. It used to be that NetWorker's performance was not very good but after integration with Data Domain, and after they switched to a quality-based network solution, the performance increased.

Over the past five to six years, the speed that NetWorker connects between networks and servers has improved. It used to take a long time.

We are using DD Boost and it is helpful.

The possibility of recovering up-to-the-moment data is very useful. You can have any backup registry onsite. There's a special database, which will contain all index orders. The only thing you have to do is set up the backup medium with the proper backup. It's very easy to use.

There is really broad coverage as to what can be protected. That's the thing from the point of view of the usage and from the point of view of the technology itself. It's very important how it can operate easily and how it can be integrated with Data Domain.

Once it's set up properly, it works very smoothly. It's a pretty straightforward setup.

The solution is stable.

It has lots of great features, and we don't find anything lacking.

It is very scalable.

Whatever you want to back up, you can do it with Dell EMC NetWorker. It is a very solid backup software. It is the oldest backup software from EMC, and it comes from Dell EMC's legacy.

It has deduplication capabilities, where you have two similar data sets. This helps to speed up backup processes because it takes a shorter amount of time to do a backup because it has the deduplication feature already. Though, you have to buy this deduplication software separately from the license.

  • Very nice tools (nsrwatch, nsradmin) in CLI for administration, monitoring, and management. And GUI is available with enterprise level as well.
  • NetWorker’s commands are executed directly from shell/command line (you don’t need to log in to the DB or to any other kind of tool).
  • Very good backward and forward compatibility between NetWorker’s versions. You are not limited by higher version on backup client side.
  • Availability of cumulative hot fixes.
  • NetWorker server is supported on Windows and Linux OSs (unlike Commvault).
  • List of supported OSs and their versions is really long and it is the same for DBs and applications.
  • Provided documentation from EMC is quite good and well organized.
  • Block based backup and parallel save stream features are really helpful for classic backup of big file systems and lot of small files.
  • DDboost protocol speeds up backups and saves bandwidth of your LAN.
  • Possibility to create and use your own scripts in backup process or in administration.

Although Dell EMC NetWorker is a little bit more complex to combine with other products, it is really a very strong product. It became stronger when we started doing backups to disks instead of to data simulators when we import the Data Domain. The solution became stronger because the backup to disks is faster and the duplication ratios and compression are very high so it will save lots of space at this storage size. The granularity of the Exchange Servers is very good.

Dell EMC NetWorker is a very solid Backup software. It is the oldest backup software from EMC. It comes from Dell EMC's legacy.

The most valuable feature of NetWorker is the wide spectrum of available plugins for each and every software you can back up. For example, SAP, SAP S/4HANA, Oracle, and AIX.

Networker is very good backup software. It always provides you with incremental backups.

When you reach out to your maximum license availability, or you exceed your license limit, NetWorker never stops doing your backups.

With one terabyte of a license, you can back up a hundred terabytes of data back up. They never stop doing that. We always need to follow a fixed software but some customers have an overcapacity license, and they are happy about this feature.

It has a rich set of features.

Data domain is the best feature in this solution. I think that this application was better when it was a backup window for a huge number of VMs.

Networker with Data Domain  has a great value in integration with VMware regarding the enhanced backup window and high value of deduplication and capacity saving we can get with this setup especially in case of protecting high number of VMs.
