Fortinet FortiNAC Initial Setup

Batu Akalin - PeerSpot reviewer

We had no problems integrating FortiNAC. We didn't have another NAC solution, so the integration was easy. In the first stage, we monitored the system, prepared the policies, and applied the policies to the network step by step. The installation took about two weeks. One person is enough to administer the solution, but we have a partner who performs annual maintenance.

The initial setup was okay because we had help from the Fortinet experts. It was a new application for us, so obviously, there was lots of learning involved. However, we were able to explain what things needed to happen, and they were able to actually show us, "Okay. That one, we do like this. This one, we can do like that." Also, we had some additional things that weren't included in our environment, and the support engineers were able to provide those solutions for us. We continue to buy more solutions from them that work with what we have procured already, including firewalls, radio servers, and a variety of plug-ins.

This product is quite complex to set up and you have to purchase two or three days' worth of professional installation, which is an added initial expense. This is understandable because it is not something you can pick up and just run with.

While we are familiar with the product and find it straightforward to deploy from our perspective, our clients may find it challenging. Therefore, we believe it's essential to offer the simplest implementation methods and documentation to assist them effectively.

The initial setup required someone with experience. I would rate my experience with the initial setup around an eight out of ten, where ten is the most complex. So, it was moderately complex.

The documentation was comprehensive and well-documented. I didn't have any complaints working with it.

It is straightforward to deploy Fortinet FortiNAC until you reach the compliance part. If you have a simple compliance rule, you have just one policy. However, with Fortinet FortiNAC, we can create layers of compliance, and that's when it gets complicated since there is no visual way to see those layers. You need to know your configuration to understand the layers. If someone new accesses the Fortinet FortiNAC solution and tries to look through your policies, they will need time and training to understand how the layers of compliance work.

Initial setup is pretty easy. If you're doing a VM setup, you do the registration on the Fortinet portal, and then you set the IP addresses. I think it's pretty good when you're implementing it the first time, it's very easy but when you get to tests, which are the UAT's, you're most likely to have a few issues that you need to be aware of.

Deployment time depends on the kind of customer. For example, the current implementation I'm doing has an assessing vendor. 90% of the network is wireless and 10% is cabled in network. They have more than 80 access features, more than 80 routers, and two wireless controllers. They have a number of databases and different firewalls - to use that fountain it slows things down. You're also dealing with Domain users, contractors and Guests in different locations. Obviously this will take more time than a project with less infrastructure devices. It really depends on the nature of the infrastructure.

It is pretty easy and straightforward. A default implementation can take two days. It is not that complex, but it also depends on the use cases that you have for the FortiNAC solution. So, it can be a really simple implementation, but it can also be months of implementation depending on the use case.

The installation is not straightforward, it can be hard.  The documentation should be better in explaining to process in more detail. The installation requires too much experience and knowledge about network infrastructure. It's not easy, you have to be an expert.

The difficulty level of the installation and time depends on many factors. For example, one of our customer's installations was simple because they only had to block one site and only had one hardware vendor, such as Cisco.

Our second installation was more difficult because the customer had many different hardware vendors, such as Cisco, Huawei, Aruba, and Extreme as part of their infrastructure. This requires configuring different settings on every device, it can be complicated. This can take a lot of time.

The initial deployment took three days however we encountered many issues. The main factor was our network set-up was not fully understood by Bradford prior to purchase and deployment. This created many issues while we were in production with 10-15% of our users having connectivity problems every day. We were not fully operational until 3 months after deployment.

Initial set-up was done via a “Quick Start” where the bare bones are implemented by and on site tech. This is not meant to be a full implementation but to get the foundation in place. The on-site tech was knowledgeable but again, we had issues with understanding out network set-up and its complexity which were not discovered in the quick start.

The initial setup is complex. How long it takes to deploy depends on the complexity of the project, for example, if you are setting up the solution at branches or just at one location. So long as the team is cooperating and coordinating, it shouldn't take more than three months. You only need one to two engineers to deploy the solution. Afterward, you may only need one person for maintenance.
