Fortinet FortiNAC Valuable Features

Batu Akalin - PeerSpot reviewer

I like FortiNAC's integration with other Fortinet devices. They work together well, but the solution also works with other network devices. FortiNAC has improved our security posture because we made some use-case scenarios for unauthorized devices. When unauthorized device IDs enter our network, and the associated team sees a new device, they can block the attackers.

It's a very good solution and one thing I have noted is its simplicity and the ease of the set-up process. Of course, we worked with experts from Fortinet who helped us set it up, but if you look at how easy it is to follow the instructions, like the simplicity of the UI, it's like a daily language. If I want to block an access and I think it should flow a certain way, I can do it that way easily. In other solutions, like maybe Cisco ISE for example, I think you need to be a bit more technical to really understand what you are doing.

The most valuable aspect of Fortinet FortiNAC is the control it offers. Deploying the solution allows us to enforce our network access policy, ensuring outsiders cannot access our internal network without requesting and receiving proper authorization. This system effectively flags unauthorized attempts and directs guests to a dedicated guest network, preventing them from reaching sensitive production resources.

The device fingerprinting feature was helpful in creating and enforcing access policies. The device profiling feature allows you to create fingerprints and define acceptance policies based on that.

The most valuable feature of Fortinet FortiNAC is compliance, which we can do with the clients and the endpoints on the network. We can specify many rules to check if the device is on the domain and if there is any allowed process running on the endpoint. We can use the Fortinet FortiNAC to monitor if the antivirus is working and is up-to-date on the endpoint. If there is something wrong with the endpoint, we can quarantine it so that the endpoint won't have access to the internet or will only have access to the NAC portal that tells the user what is wrong with their endpoint.

Compared to other NAC vendors, Fortinet’s user interface is more user-friendly. The UI of other NAC products is very complex. We can customize the dashboard.

The most valuable feature of the solution is having visibility over the IoT devices on the network. It allows the organization to see all the machines on the network, who is accessing what at which time, and what they are doing.

We can couple the tool with Active Directory, Fortinet Single Sign-On, or FortiGate. If we have a big enterprise with 1000 users and want to manage a fabric of switches and access and underlay BGP and IS-IS, we can do it with FortiNAC.

With FortiNAC, we don't need to configure the mass client site or access points. For example, we don't need to configure the switching site for a client's site. With Persistent Agent, it makes it much easier.

There are quite a number of things that are valuable about this solution. Having dealt with Cisco ISE, I realize that FortiNAC is different in a way that gives you granular visibility of the entire network infrastructure related to IOT devices (Who, What, When, Which information). It's helpful that you can know what's going on from your phone, your tablet, and from home. The solution provides containment, reporting and security event-alarm mapping and saves log and carries out further analysis for cyber thefts. It really is a good solution.

Fortinet FortiNAC has good user account customization.

We can change the logo for the portals to meet the customer's needs. The portal default language is English but it supports all languages, such as Turkish. The portal can be optimized very easily.

Device profiling is a good feature, we can block devices, such as iOS or Android.

Endpoint compliance is a great feature that allows us to restrict and quarantine devices. For example, if a device is not using the latest version of an operating system or antivirus program we can detect it and prohibit their access. If certain conditions are met with the customer's policies, we can let them have access. Otherwise, our endpoints compliance rules block or quarantine their devices on the network.

Out of 6500 wireless devices we see issues with less than 0.5% of clients. Though the product has many features we only utilize a fraction of them. We use the product for registration and management of our wireless network (NAC). The most valuable asset is visibility in to what a client is and who is using it. By forcing guests/users to register their BYOD devices we know who they are and can then apply appropriate web filtering policies to them based on a number of factors. We can then use that data to export reports etc on usage of our wireless network as a whole and troubleshoot as needed.

We are only consultants, so we implement FortiNAC for our customers. The good part about FortiNAC is that it works seamlessly across either public cloud, private cloud, a hybrid one or on premises. So, depending on the client's requirements, I usually suggest that they go for public cloud where they have remote locations, and that they go for an application where they have a large deployment, adequate network and technical staff to support the requests.

The features we generally propose is basically agent-based authentication and the agent case solution product for wireless endpoints, which allow them to do automatic registration, and the third would be the health checks.
