Fortinet FortiAuthenticator Initial Setup

Network admin at Penobscot Valley Hospital

It was complex when it came to the active directory portion of the product. Knowing what was required to have the active directory integration with the authenticator was a little tricky, and figuring out how the users' email addresses were going to be displayed. When you go to Office 365, it redirects it back to the authenticator and you have to make sure you have the right configuration and the right domain because it inputs it based on your domain name. It was difficult to get that figured out.

The product's initial setup phase was easy. It is also easy to deploy.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

The time taken to deploy the solution depends on the familiarity of the user with the solution. If you are familiar with the product, deploying it takes about a minute.

The deployment was not complex, but it is not quite easy to deploy it on the desktop. It took three to four hours. We took half a day because we were new to the product and our employees were also involved in other tasks. The network team in our organization maintains the solution. There are six people in our network team.

The initial setup is complicated. However, considering the complicated tasks it does, it is fine.

In general, you just spend about three days designing and implementing the solution.

The deployment is done in the customer's environment and as per what they require. So, configure the LDAP integration and SAML integration with the existing sources. Then I started to create the SAML services and RADIUS services for firewalls. I then copy to add the tokens before authenticating the users. Then, they can pull it down from the OTAP service.

The initial setup is complex. It would be helpful if customers get assistance from professional services. They can customize it depending on the architecture visibility. It is easy to design if they hire a knowledgeable architect. It takes less than a week to complete.

In terms of implementation, it performs quite well.

Regarding setup, I would say that it is straightforward but not simple. It's not a job for the novice, but it is straightforward for an experienced engineer. Also, my clients normally ask for help.

The solution gets deployed on physical, virtual, and SaaS.

The cloud deployment felt limited, but there was valuable information on the Internet. A lot of testing needs to be done, and the deployment is easier for those who understand how to do it on the cloud. We needed support here and the support team could not figure out the issue. Eventually, one of the support team members helped, but there was still an information gap.

We typically only need to perform installation updates or implement changes if infrastructure changes occur at the customer's end. This doesn't happen often, once or twice a year. When implemented correctly, it's not complicated to manage, so it isn't required. We have a team of five engineers responsible for deployment, maintenance, and all other operations related to the product.

The initial setup is easy. Only the Fortinet Access Control is difficult. The network access control solution is a difficult topic as well. It's not that the product is difficult. It's the environment, connecting to the switches, the firewalls, the zones, and the difficult appliances. FortiAuthenticator is easy to use and install.

However, I know FortiAuthenticator, so the initial setup was easy when I saw this product. The initial setup for all of the Fortinet products is typically easy.

The deployment time depends on the difficulty of the destination environment. Our last installation took four days. After that, we created the system's documentation, which took one day.

Initial setup and configuration are very straightforward. From a technical perspective, you need to know where to do the PDS but if you have a technical background it should be very straightforward. I just bring the VM or the trial license and I start to do the POC, usually with the VM.

Initial setup and deployment sometimes need integration with FortiGate, and sometimes via the captive portal. It takes a maximum of an hour, but it also depends on the end-user and what they need to be integrated into the system, like features such as SMS gateway parameters.

The initial setup is a valuable point on Fortinet products. Most of the time, putting the theory into practice on the devices is quite friendly and straightforward. As long as you can read through the menus, you can find your way around the solution and make it work. A 10 minute surf through the tabs will give you an idea of what you can do and how to do it. Documentations and guides are also available when needed.

This is a high value point on Fortinet - the way everything is laid out in the web UI is user-friendly and quite straightforward.
