Good intrusion prevention and easy to set up but the pricing is high

Pros and Cons

  • "The solution gives us a lot of visibility into our security."
  • "The solution requires better management. When it comes to central management capabilities, improvements can be made."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for network firewalling and intrusion prevention.

How has it helped my organization?

We get a bit of visibility into network threats and we can successfully mitigate those threats by using the product.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature would be the intrusion prevention for us for security reasons.

The setup is pretty straightforward.

The solution gives us a lot of visibility into our security.

The product is quite stable.

There are pretty good capabilities for scaling.

What needs improvement?

Currently, this product is difficult to manage. It needs to be more user-friendly.

A lot of improvements can be made into the overall architecture of the firewall. It's lacking right now. It's something they need to work hard to improve.

The reason for the lack of cohesion in the architecture is due to the fact that Cisco acquired this company and then they merged two products, the Cisco ASA and the Firepower product, into a single product. As a result, the product is not as mature as some of the other comparable products out in the industry.

The price is in the high end of the spectrum, again, comparing to other players in the industry.

The solution requires better management. When it comes to central management capabilities, improvements can be made.

Better reporting in terms of analytics and dashboards would be very useful in future versions.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for about five years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability overall has been good once we get it up and running. We've not seen any issues once we've launched everything. It isn't buggy or glitchy. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability on the solution is good overall. They have a central management console that can assist with the process. The only issue there is we feel like there's room for improvement on the administration side of things.

When it comes to a user installing the networks, all the users essentially traverse this firewall, but when it comes to the administrators of the product, we've got five administrators in networking, they pretty much use it on a daily basis.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support has been good. We're satisfied with the level of service we get. They know what they are talking about. They respond promptly. Overall, they are above-average. I'd rate them eight out of ten.

Of course, there's always a little bit of room for improvement from any technical support service. In general, it's always about the speed of resolving an issue, responsiveness, et cetera. These are common industry wide. We always want everything resolved faster.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used FortiGate. We switched as we wanted something that had easy management capabilities, so we moved to Cisco. We thought that Cisco would be a bit more mature.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is a little bit difficult. It's pretty straightforward, although if we look at it relative to other products on the market, we feel that the other products are easier to set up compared to this one.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is actually pretty high, especially if you compare it to other solutions that are out there. They are comparable but cost less.

What other advice do I have?

The advice we would give to other organizations is to look at the administrative overhead, and also to pay close attention to when the company is deploying it. We feel that there are certain feature functionalities that might not be mature depending on a company's use case. Everything depends on use cases. A company needs to evaluate its own unique use case, and look at the product feature functionality. A company also needs to look at some of the administrative overhead before they choose the product to make sure that it is suitable for their environment.

This solution overall I would rate at seven out of ten. I would say it's a good product if you look at the primary functionality, which is intrusion prevention. It's is one of the best out there, however, the issue is it's been wrapped around an administrative layer which is quite difficult compared to other products. They've got a really good engine as far as IPSs go, and that's the most important thing.

Good VPN and filtering features, 100% stable, but needs a better graphical user interface and more training

Pros and Cons

  • "The VPN and the filtering features are the most valuable. Its VPN is very strong, and its services are very nice. The main problem in India is the service. There are not enough Check Point and Fortinet Firewall services, but for this product, the service is very good."
  • "Its graphical user interface could be improved because not everybody is technical. There is a lack of knowledge, and they can give some training for this solution."

What is our primary use case?

We basically use this solution to filter traffic so that the network can be secured and no one can hack the network. We are using WatchGuard as a gateway security product. It is installed on the gateway to filter the traffic for our network, stop access to malicious websites, and protect our interwork network from any kind of hack attempt from outside.

We are also using the VPN feature. The traffic is encrypted via a VPN, and no one can hack it. We are using the latest version of this solution.

What is most valuable?

The VPN and the filtering features are the most valuable. Its VPN is very strong, and its services are very nice.

The main problem in India is the service. There are not enough Check Point and Fortinet Firewall services, but for this product, the service is very good.

What needs improvement?

Its graphical user interface could be improved because not everybody is technical. There is a lack of knowledge, and they can give some training for this solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for three months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is 100% stable. Our technical team had tested this product before buying it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have approximately 500 to 700 users who are using this solution in our company.

How are customer service and technical support?

I haven't used their support.

How was the initial setup?

It is easy to install. If we have all the required information about static IP, private and personal IPs, and network series, it takes just 10 to 15 minutes to install.

We have seven technical guys for its deployment and maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is not expensive. Other products like Fortinet and Check Point are of the same price.

What other advice do I have?

I would 100% recommend this solution to others. We plan to keep using this solution in the future.

I would rate WatchGuard Intrusion Prevention Service a seven out of ten.

I have not contacted technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we have tried an open-source SIEM solution. SIEM is a traffic analyzer, and conflicts can be fixed. With Trend Micro, you can only categorize it.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was easy.

This solution can be deployed in two days.

What about the implementation team?

I did not use a vendor to implement this solution. I did it myself.

What other advice do I have?

We are trying this solution as a POC.

It's a nice product and it has really helped limit the attacks.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Reliable hardware, highly stable, and global technical support

Pros and Cons

  • "One of the main features is that the hardware is extremely reliable."
  • "I think they should bring back remote VPN for users."

What is most valuable?

One of the main features is that the hardware is extremely reliable.

What needs improvement?

I think they should bring back remote VPN for users. However, I understand the attempt is to have these functions inside the firewalls and not the routers or the IOS devices.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is great. I feel very confident working with them because I have a customer that has a router running for almost 10 years and in other cases more than 10 years.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support has been impressive. I know there are no other brands that have the same good service.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have been working with Palo Alto Networks and Fortinet in the past but they do not have technical assistance centers around the globe as this solution does. However, Palo Alto solutions are more intuitive, the graphic user interface is better, and has higher performance. Cisco is catching up and closing the gap with new releases.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Palo Alto networks are more expensive than this solution and this is why you will see more products like this one in Mexico.

I have been working with the next-generation firewalls by Palo Alto and the license tends to be better. For example, Palo Alto Wildfire, the licensing is more dynamic than Cisco products.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Cisco IOS Security an eight out of ten.
