Fortinet FortiMail Initial Setup

EG
Manager for Information Technology at BIC

The initial setup isn't too complex. I'd rate it seven out of ten.

If people know how to set up email security, it is easier. You have to have the basic knowledge of how to set up email security and how to create policies. Any security person who's been in this field for a long time will be able to do it within an hour or two.

You do require a minimum of at least two to three people to handle it. You need to have one from the incident-response team who will handle the incidents, analyze the incidents, and then, basically, take a response or action on the activity. Another person should be available to generate reports and, basically, review the reports and provide them to audits and the compliance team. You also need a person who knows the whole system by heart and who's experienced in it.

We only need five admins to manage the solution.

The solution was installed before I started at the company. That said, my understanding is the setup process is very easy.

It's not very difficult. It's quite easy with GUI. Within a short span of time, you can easily configure the firewall and FortiMail and integrate them. It's not a big deal. I would rate it as eight.

We received it in December, and within one month, we tested it. After some time, we went live with Fortinet, which took around seven days. So, the deployment process took about five to six weeks.

A person setting up the tool must have the technology and domain experience. The preliminary deployment can happen within three to six hours. The tool's fine-tuning happens over one to two weeks.

The initial setup of Fortinet is not suitable for everyone; it requires a solid understanding of how email systems function, making it less accessible for entry-level or junior technicians. Proper comprehension of mail concepts is crucial for a successful deployment. Incorrect configurations may lead to misleading outcomes, potentially causing disruptions in both incoming and outgoing emails.

Regarding the time taken for deployment, If it is in gateway mode, then it will not take more than two to three hours. If such necessities are not there in place, it will take more time.

Though I wasn't part of the team that installed Fortinet FortiMail, my impression was that the installation was straightforward because it had some documentation on how to do it, and it was easy, so you won't have much trouble installing Fortinet FortiMail. You just need to learn the dashboard first, which is normal for first-time users of any other application. The solution did have a very user-friendly GUI.

Fortinet FortiMail implementation didn't take long. You first put it on the testing platform with a test domain, then you implement it in a production environment, where you'll learn how to use it, and determine how to best put the solution in production. Next, you set up or orient email traffic to the platform, then let the admins and Fortinet FortiMail support team do the work in terms of finetuning the solution and figuring out how to implement it based on company requirements. Though I don't have exact information on how long the deployment took, it was just a short period. For example, for Fortinet FortiMail to be up and running, it took just a couple of days.

The initial setup is not easy to handle on your own. I, for example, required the assistance of a vendor.

The initial deployment took about 14 working days, about half a month or so.

We have two technical people, engineers, that can manage the product.

With the right guidance, the product's initial setup phase is not that complicated. Fortinet FortiMail provides good documentation and a support team to help users.

The solution is deployed with the help of Open Virtual Appliance (OVA).

The time taken to deploy the solution depends on the organization, but generally, the deployment process takes around seven days to complete in SMEs.

I rate the initial setup a nine out of ten.

If there is only one gateway in the environment and it's the first deployment, it's easy. However, the initial setup can be difficult if you have to integrate and migrate from different products or solutions.

It took about a week to deploy the solution. But it depends on the difficulty of the environment. Sometimes, we must migrate policies, rules, and other configuration parts from different old mail gateways, such as Symantec Brightmail. And it's not too easy to configure all of the parameters exactly in the new environment.

They provide two types of Fortinet FortiMail. The first one is the box you need, the hardware. You just have to mount it in the rack and there is a configuration, actually, that you have to learn. If I am going to configure that it will take three to four hours. Then we can launch it live and move it into the production environment. Then there are other solutions that are VM-based and their configuration is the same, but the two differences are that it is not a physical box but a virtual machine and requires designing like ESXi or Hyper-V.

The initial setup is easy. Anyone with an experience in email security solutions can install it. Deployment time depends on the environment; it may take as little as two days or up to two weeks. It requires one executive to implement and maintain it. The product needs tuning every one or two months for maintenance. The engineer has to check for email caches.

The initial setup was straightforward.

The deployment time varies depending on if you are doing research, or if you are going to post on your site regarding FortiMail. If it is one domain it will take one day, or if it is for ten domains that have to be checked on to see the main flow and to see everything, it can take anywhere from one to three days.

We had only one staff member for the deployment of this solution.

To have it fully deployed and for fine-tuning, it will need ten working days. At some points, there is mail that you receive and not able to detect them, for example, all of the mail you are getting are spam or are getting quarantined or they are not quarantined, they are just trespassing in, you need approximately ten days. It's similar to machine learning, where you can learn your emails and how they flow.

Simply put, the implementation is one to three days and for fine-tuning, it is ten days.

It was complex because you have to collect all the right information from the customer, then you need to put it into the equipment as rules, so it's complex. The solution also evolves, and from time to time, you have to fine-tune it to implement the new features and increase the level of security.

Installation is effortless with all Fortinet products. With simple settings, the initial installation takes half an hour tops. Then, if the customer wants a custom configuration, that might take five additional minutes. Customers almost always want something, and we have to update the configuration. One admin is enough to handle everything. The admin has to talk to the customer. You can do some templates, but every customer's needs are different. For example, sending 5,000 emails from one source to a destination is a big problem. You could get flagged as spam. But for some personal reasons, this setup might be needed because the customer is in a relationship with others, so perhaps he will send advertising emails to the customers, so 5,000 is okay. You can allow just this functionality for just one person and deny it to others. So it's adaptable for the needs of each customer, but one admin guy is enough.

I believe that the complexity of the initial setup depends on the customer's environment and their need. This can increase or decrease the complexity of deployment. Generally, it takes between 10 to 20 working days to fully deploy. And then we require only occasional support for maintenance, again depending on the case.

The FortiMail deployment takes about two weeks. It depends on what needs to be configured and the size of the system. We only need three admins with one as the super admin and two as partial admins.

Every day we are using the system to monitor the emails. Every day we check our system and the quarantines. You should check the graylist domains. As you know the FortiMail depend on customer behavior. By your behavior or your incoming email's behavior, you can tune and fix policies with your environment. You have to take the time to do it.
