Stable with good technical support and easy to manage

Pros and Cons

  • "The initial setup is pretty quick."
  • "Compared to, for example, Hitachi NAS, the solution is not mature at all. It's just in its infancy as far as technology goes."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution as a platform of NAS for users that use NFS devices.

What is most valuable?

The solution is very easy to manage.

Overall, the product has great performance.

The initial setup is pretty quick.

We've found the pricing to be okay.

Technical support has been great so far.

The stability of the solution is reliable.

What needs improvement?

Compared to, for example, Hitachi NAS, the solution is not mature at all. It's just in its infancy as far as technology goes.

That means there are some features that just arent yet available on the product. When we ask for customization or certain features, we'll get a response saying "it's not available yet" or "that's in the pipeline". We have a complicated enterprise, therefore we need more features, perhaps, than the average user, and in this sense this product is limited.

We're on a dark site. We don't have internet access. This isn't great for FlashBlade, which needs to be connected to the internet. It's a website, so it needs to be connected in order to provide reports. Therefore, reporting isn't available to us.

We'd love a better dashboard that offers more accurate metrics. We'd like more details about what is happening on the system, so we can notify the clients as necessary.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've only been using the solution for three months. It hasn't been too long.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is quite stable. We don't have any issues with it crashing to freezing. It's reliable as far as I can tell.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We've only been using the solution for three months. We haven't really tested scalability. It's my understanding that it is scalable however, I don't have any first-hand experience in the matter.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've contacted technical support in the past. So far, we've been quite satisfied with their level of service. They've been very good to us.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to use Hitachi NAS, which is a much more robust product. It's been on the market for a while, so it definitely has a few more features than this solution.

How was the initial setup?

I would describe the process as pretty straightforward. It's not too complex.

It only takes a day to set everything up and deploy it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of the solution is reasonable. It's not too expensive. We've found it to be pretty fair and we haven't been surprised by any costs.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer. We don't have a business relationship with the company.

Overall, I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

We'd recommend the solution to others. It's worked well for us so far. Of course, it would depend on a company's use case and what they need to achieve.

A great product with good support, stability, and features such as cloning and snapshots

Pros and Cons

  • "The cloning and snapshot features are the most valuable. With snapshot backup, we can clone a big database in minutes. We take a lot of snapshots for clients in different environments."
  • "The admin tools and the integration with other products and clouds can be improved. It should also be easier to identify and troubleshoot problems in this solution. It takes a long time, and it should be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for different machines, Oracle Database, super server database, and a few BDI projects.

What is most valuable?

The cloning and snapshot features are the most valuable. With snapshot backup, we can clone a big database in minutes. We take a lot of snapshots for clients in different environments.

What needs improvement?

The admin tools and the integration with other products and clouds can be improved.

It should also be easier to identify and troubleshoot problems in this solution. It takes a long time, and it should be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution since 2012.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Its stability is very good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. There is scalability for processing. We have small and large organizations as clients.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is very good, and the documentation is also complete and useful for us.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our clients were using other solutions, such as Hitachi, and they switched because of its scalability, functionality, and support.

How was the initial setup?

The cloud setup is easier to implement. The on-premises setup is a little more complex.

We deployed it a few weeks ago. It took one to two weeks for planning and two weeks for final implementation, but it can take longer if there is any kind of migration or change of product.

What about the implementation team?

We deployed it ourselves. We worked for NetApp from 2012 to 2015. We did a lot of implementations in Chile, Argentina, Columbia, and Peru. It is very familiar to us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

All features are included in the license, whereas with an EMC solution, you have to pay separately for extra terabytes.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated HP and EMC. The main differences were the support, functionality, and cost of NetApp.

What other advice do I have?

Last year, NetApp started to move away from Chile and the Latin American region. They are not selling the solutions directly. They have an agreement with Lenovo to sell NetApp products worldwide with the Lenovo brand.

I would advise others to take the help of a good implementor and get proper certifications. It is also very important to understand what do you want from the solution.

I would rate NetApp AFF a ten out of ten. It is a great product with great support.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Very stable, good performance, much faster than other solutions, and has native cloud integration

Pros and Cons

  • "Its performance is most valuable. This solution is much faster than other as well as older storage solutions. The performance of the system is very good. We are getting 50 times better experience than the older storages. We are using AFF 300. It also has native cloud integration and most of the features."
  • "Its pricing should be better. Its price is competitive, but they need to improve the pricing. They have different licensing models, which they need to improve. My expectation was cloud integration, which they have, but it is a different license. Therefore, people cannot enjoy it. If I want to use it, I need to pay extra. There is a cost involved for everything, but it should reach everyone. It is similar to having a Rolls-Royce, but you need to pay extra for the key. If you want the key, you need to pay."

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have around 3,000 users. We plan to increase the usage of this product.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is good. I am satisfied with their support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have been using only NetApp in this company, and it is good. I also have experience with solutions from Hitachi, EMC, Dell, IBM, HP, and others.

How was the initial setup?

It is very easy. It hardly took four hours.

What about the implementation team?

We used an integrator for deployment, and we are satisfied with the experience.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They need to improve its pricing. The storage market is dying. So, they need to improve the price because it should reach all people. NetApp is one of the top ones, and they are charging a little bit of royalty as compared to other storage solutions.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate NetApp EF-Series All Flash Arrays a ten out of ten.

User-friendly, best technical support, but needs more stability and capacity

Pros and Cons

  • "It is easy to set up, easy to use, and user-friendly. It is easier to work with HPE 3PAR than with Hitachi. Its technical support is also good."
  • "It is suitable for medium-sized businesses and data centers with less number of users and less important data. It is not really an enterprise-level solution. It needs more capacity. It is also not really stable. It should be more stable. It should also support any server model. It is really weak in this area."

What is our primary use case?

It is used in data centers. We are using HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8400.

What is most valuable?

It is easy to set up, easy to use, and user-friendly. It is easier to work with HPE 3PAR than with Hitachi. Its technical support is also good.

What needs improvement?

It is suitable for medium-sized businesses and data centers with less number of users and less important data. It is not really an enterprise-level solution. It needs more capacity.

It is also not really stable. It should be more stable. It should also support any server model. It is really weak in this area.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is not really stable. It should be more stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is good, but it needs a bigger capacity for an enterprise data center. We have around 1,000 users.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is really good. HP is the best in terms of technical support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. It is easier to install than Hitachi. You need two or three people for its deployment.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Hitachi over this solution. We plan to keep using this solution because it is useful for one or two of our projects.

I would rate HPE 3PAR StoreServ a seven out of ten.
