Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform Initial Setup

Deploying the Hitachi platform is simple. I have extensive experience deploying storage, so it is no big deal for me. Most storage brands have similar features.

The setup is in three parts. One is the field setup, with someone coming in to do the initial configuration, which would have an IP address, and work away from it.

Followed by the Professional Service setup, which is architecture and design. It's a very versatile box, so that setup is very tricky. We have to get it right the first time.

If you make a mistake and don't design or architect the platform correctly, you're going to have to unwind, which can be done with the help of snapshots.

With the vCenter, you control these things, and in this case, the controller. And you take a snapshot and put it on another box.

So it could be easier to deploy.

The initial setup is straightforward. There is no complexity in configuring everything. The deployment takes a maximum of one or two days.

We typically receive a scope of work from the customer. Once the scope of work is finalized, we ascertain the specific workloads that will be allocated to this storage and determine the assignments related to this storage product. Once the scope of work is completed, we transition into the deployment phase.

The initial setup was easy. Integration is straightforward, with options for Fibre Channel or iSCSI connections. We typically choose Fibre Channel for its efficiency.

The installation and configuration process took approximately three days. It's fairly easy to maintain. The process is well documented.

The product's initial setup phase is complex and complicated.

The solution can be deployed in six months because our company needs each and every implementation node and the report required for it. Implementing the tool takes around six months.

For the implementation process, my company first had to have a meeting with Hitachi, after which we were given a plan which was discussed in our organization's internal meeting. My company goes through the two or three types of installation proposals received from Hitachi, and then we finalize it so that the implementation process can be started. A person from Hitachi is physically available on-site during the implementation process.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model. In 2016, when my company wanted to implement Forcepoint, we found that it was available only on the on-premises version and not in the cloud.

I rate the initial setup phase a nine on a scale of one to ten, where one means it is a difficult process, and ten means it is an easy process. The product's installation phase is easy.

There are boxes available under the product, and they get implemented depending on the different kinds of workloads in my company, because of which, the tool may get used in clouds, VDIs, and GPU servers for high-performance computing.

The solution can be deployed in two to three hours.

I was part of the project from the initial internal requirements. The initial deployment was somewhat complex when it came to the installation because of the network connectivity. It was more difficult, in this specific case, than with other platforms.

We used the embedded management for the installation. It made the latter part of the deployment easy, but the first part was very complicated for us.

We're a relatively large customer, so we do not perform installation ourselves. Service partners typically perform it. We have three people managing the storage, three working with the storage area network, and five handling the backups.

The initial setup of the Hitachi VSP was relatively straightforward for us. Hitachi deployed an engineer who handled the configuration and initial setup process. Subsequently, they provided training and guidance on managing and monitoring the system and providing storage for various needs, such as integrating with other cloud platforms like AWS.

The deployment duration can vary depending on the size and complexity of the setup. In our case, as it was for a tier-two data center, the deployment process took approximately two months. This included around one month for preparation and approval processes, followed by another month for delivery and configuration of the storage components.

Setting it up is not very easy but it's also not so difficult. The time it takes depends on the size of the solution. While it's not so time-consuming, you have to plan for a process that will take at least 15 days. These products are always deployed in high-end, sensitive customer environments, where we are playing with their data, so it does take at least that long.

A senior storage engineer is enough for the deployment. With the addition of a junior-level engineer, the two of them can handle the maintenance.

With Hitachi's embedded management, the initial setup is easy. Only one management software is required and it's embedded in the box. But for the centralized management, there is another product that is deployed on another server.

The embedded management is very easy compared to previous systems where we needed to install a client on the management station. But most solutions have an embedded management platform.

The product's initial setup phase is not very difficult since it doesn't take much time to do. In my company, we work with an IT technician and Hitachi's field engineer during the deployment phase of the product, but I don't know how the setup is done.

The solution is deployed on the cloud. It currently works on an integrated setup or is better described as a hybrid integrated setup. The tool is integrated with multiple cloud technologies, but I am not sure how it was done or works.

The solution can be deployed in a few days or around a week.

It's simpler than earlier storage solutions. There are a lot of things that we had to do in the past, but setup and implementation are very simple here. Deployment takes about a week or so. It usually takes no longer than 15 days at most, from the site readiness stage to completion.

The setup is very easy to manage and configure. The initial setup and takes one hour more or less. And when I check the old disk and processor or the memory cache, I check the blade also. Next, I changed the disk, created the configuration, and installed the old disk. This takes maybe one hour extra. Depending on the performance of the old disk and the capacity, it could take maybe three or four hours. Sometimes, it takes eight. Then I created a SAN, a port, the host groups, the DP pools, and the dynamic provisioning. And for performance troubleshooting, I take a dump. For example, I check the read-write performance of the IO as well as the performance of the port, the workflow, the workload, and the memory cache.

I would advise others that are wanting to implement Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G Series to look carefully at the tools they need, such as management. It is important to evaluate this tool, it can be very useful. If they don't have these tools needed then it can be very difficult to receive reliable information.

I rate the product’s deployment one out of ten. The deployment process lasted for three months. The initial deployment encountered numerous performance issues, leading to instability and frequent disruptions in production. The on-site engineering team was actively engaged for almost three months to address and resolve these challenges.

The integration process of Hitachi VSP into the existing IT infrastructure is not straightforward and is a bit complex.

If you are migrating from Hitachi to Hitachi, it has not been a problem for us because if you have an existing model they will do the migration to a newer one. In case if you are going to change different OEMs you will have to have the right model equivalent for migration. For example, if you have an HPE solution equivalent to the Hitachi is 5100 then the migration is possible.

The initial setup is not straightforward. You need to be a storage expert to install the product and work with it. It's not that simple and discouraging.

If it wasn't so complicated to install it, it would be better. Every step takes a lot of time in the system. But it's a very steady system. It works after the initial setup.

Deployment took two months before we started to migrate data. There was another month for the data migration and two months was the machine hardware install, the software updates, and resilience checks from my side.

After all the setup and the discovery of the product, we started to schedule dates for data migration and move all the relevant data subscriptions.

The installation of this solution is a little bit hard. In these kinds of products, the original companies are often interested in setting up the product in the customer's environment.

We are located in Iran, and there is a lot of tension and lack of communication because of our locale. There are restrictions in a lot of our data centers that preclude us from having special software from the original company, and because of that, we face a lot of problems when using these kinds of products.

The initial setup and configuration are usually done by the CE of the vendor, and after the initial configuration is complete, These products are sent to our data centers.
