Huawei OceanStor Previous Solutions

Senior Networks Manager at STZA

We have worked with Dell EMC. The Dell EMC storage with comparable specifications was presented to us at double the cost. This is the primary reason we opted for OceanStor. While our initial preference was Dell EMC, their pricing was significantly high.

On the other hand, a direct comparison with Dell EMC might be unfair, as Huawei OceanStor wasn't even born during Dell EMC's production. The maturity level of EMC is much higher.

In comparison between Dell EMC and Huawei OceanStor, I would assign a rating of ten to Dell EMC and five to OceanStor. However, it's worth acknowledging that OceanStore has improved a lot in performance.

We have been working with many different vendors such as Hitachi and NetApp, but I found Huawei OceanStor to be a better choice compared to others. They provide efficient performance with advanced data protection features that ensure data integrity and protect critical business information.

I have used other solutions, such as Dell and Cisco. The main difference is a matter of compatibility. Most Dell storage, have compatible with the new processors. Huawei uses its own company processor, which is not as compatible with our customers' needs.

We also use IBM and HP for storage. It's not all Huawei. The usability across all of the solutions is similar. The only difference is the documentation for OceanStor isn't readily available. That said, their support is very responsive. The others require you to go through third parties that will analyze the issues first.

We had an Hitachi SAN AMS 2100 system, that provided us a great service along a lot of years, but that at the moment was completely obsolete (limited FC speed, disks starting to fail frequently, low relative capacity). The storage was not in par with the new servers and their capacities. The main cause of removal was the lack of official support.

In the past, I have had lots of experience with different storage vendors. I worked for many of them. I have found that most of them are using the same disks, so it is hard to point to things that differentiate them. For the most part, the functionality is the same but the functions have different names.
