Hyper-V is mostly integrated with Microsoft solutions and has high availability
Pros and Cons
  • "II prefer customers to use Hyper-V because Hyper-V is mostly integrated with Microsoft solutions."

What is our primary use case?

I'm mostly implementing Hyper-V solutions. Most of my clients are implementing Hyper-V on-premises, and on cloud my clients are using Microsoft Azure.

I am a Microsoft architect. I'm certified in Microsoft. My company is located in Cameroon and many countries in Africa and out of Africa. In my company we are working on Microsoft solutions at 80% on Windows Server, SQL, Exchange, Microsoft for Business, ISO. We are training with these solutions and implementing them.

    What is most valuable?

Most clients are using Microsoft solutions. I prefer customers to use Hyper-V because Hyper-V is mostly integrated with Microsoft solutions. For example, when you have Hyper-V, it doesn't make sense to pay more for another license to buy VMware. For me, it's a waste.

With the Windows data center, I can have an infinite number of virtual machines. In the past, VMware was very important maybe 8 or 10 years ago, but with Hyper-V it has navigation ability and it's integrated with Windows Viptela 16 for free. People want navigation and high availability. All these features are included with Hyper-V for free when you have a license of Windows Server.

    What needs improvement?

For Hyper-V, the copy and paste function could be improved. You cannot continue copying from the host machine to the virtual machine. It's very difficult. You can paste text if you want to extract the command from the virtual machine. You can save the command on the host machine and pass through the main activity to paste the command on the virtual machine. It's good but sometimes when we want to work very quickly, it would help if Microsoft integrated the possibility to paste a file from the host machine to the virtual machine.

The integration tools are sometimes not very smooth. Most clients can't develop it very well because most administrators are working on host machines or from a laptop administering virtual machines. So the administrator working on a laptop  must have the possibility maybe from the host to paste on the virtual machine.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable. I have never had a problem with Hyper-V's stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable because you can migrate the virtual machine for Hyper-V to the cloud easily. Each time they release a new OS, they are adding new features so far it's scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I've never had an issue with Hyper-V where I needed to ask for support. I can resolve most issues myself.

    How was the initial setup?

    Deployment is very easy.

It depends, but it can take two or three hours to implement it. If the infrastructure is difficult, it can take one or two days. It depends on the number of virtual machines currently in use.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution 10 out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

It helps migrate all of our servers and saves us a lot of time.
    Pros and Cons
    • "We can perform maintenance on equipment during the day because we can live migrate all of the machines from one server to another."
    • "Microsoft increased the price for this solution when adding the Storage Spaces Direct feature."

What is our primary use case?

We use this product primarily for virtualization.

How has it helped my organization?

We can perform maintenance on equipment during the day because we can live migrate all of the machines from server A to server B, and then work on server A. This saves us a lot of time. It used to require working after hours for us to do this.

    What needs improvement?

I think the management tools have room for improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

    More than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I find that this solution is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very scalable. We used four staff members for deployment, and that was sufficient for our needs.

How is customer service and technical support?

We infrequently have a need for technical support help.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward for our organization. Once we understood it in the lab, it took maybe two weeks to completely understand it and document it. Then, we could send it out to our global branches.

    What was our ROI?

We are a not-for-profit, so I do not see any ROI for us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Microsoft should have not required a data center license for the new feature of Storage Spaces Direct. There is a new feature that comes with Hyper-V called "Storage Spaces Direct"  What that storage does, it allows you to use the storage in host A and use the storage in host B, and make them work together like they're one shared storage array. The computers don't know that they're putting data on server A or B. To them, it looks like one big pool of disks. Before, we used to have to buy a separate storage array, external to the servers, and tie the servers to that array. But this new feature that comes with Hyper-V let's us use the storage inside the servers, it saves money. But Microsoft tacked on a higher price for their software to use that feature, and that was just terrible. We would be using that feature more if it did not demand a data center license.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We do also use VMware vSphere. But, we use Hyper-V more. Some people have different desires. Some people want a Lexus, and other people are happy with a Honda. Both are great cars, but one is a lot more expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I would like to see deduplication and compression in a future roll-out of the product.

    Easy-to-setup platform with good scalability
    Pros and Cons
    • "It is an affordable platform."
    • "They should include a few more hardware components for integration with servers."

    What is most valuable?

It is an affordable platform than VMware for hosting older versions of Microsoft Windows like Windows XP and Windows NT.

    What needs improvement?

They should include a few more hardware components for integration with servers. It would work great for the Hyper-V environment. Additionally, they should consider cloud virtualization features.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Hyper-V since 2016.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product worked well for hosting a few Microsoft solutions.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable platform. We have 100 users for it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

    We have used VMware before.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup process is easy. It takes about two or three hours to complete. We have to follow the installation documentation. It requires one person to maintain.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product's price is low. We have to pay a one-time cost.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Hyper-V an eight out of ten. I advise others to go for it if they have an interactive environment.

A cost-effective solution that offers great value, but it falls short in terms of performance
    Pros and Cons
    • "For me, the setup of Hyper-V was an easy process, which took only one hour from start to finish."
    • "In terms of performance, when compared to VMware, it is much slower."

What is our primary use case?

In our company, we develop software internally, and many of our development systems are virtual systems hosted on Hyper-V. Additionally, we have virtual machines for office automation systems such as Exchange Server and Rack Server, which are also hosted on Hyper-V.

    What is most valuable?

The clear cost structure of the solution is its best feature.

    What needs improvement?

In terms of performance, when compared to VMware, it is much slower. This applies not only to the system performance but also to the virtual machine performance. Particularly, the disk I/O is very poor, in my opinion. Additionally, it is lacking in many features that are offered by tools such as VMware.

I currently have all the features I need. Therefore, I do not think that there is anything I need to add to my wishlist. Moreover, the company I work for is not that big. I am the sole IT personnel in a company with only 30 employees.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Hyper-V since 2010. I am currently using Hyper-V 2019. Basically, I am a user and a customer of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    Hyper-V is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scaling the solution is not a problem, as increasing the capacity is as simple as adding to the base cost, which results in a doubling of capacity. Personally, I use Hyper-V software, while the rest of the company uses virtual machines.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Apart from Hyper-V, I mainly use Microsoft Exchange as an administrative user to create system accounts and perform related tasks. However, for more technical aspects, I rely on my partner.

    How was the initial setup?

For me, the setup of Hyper-V was an easy process, which took only one hour from start to finish. The installation involved simply adding a roll. So for me, the setup of Hyper-V was not particularly a special task.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Cost-wise, what one gets is directly proportional to the price paid. If the need for capacity doubles, then the price also doubles. We get all the licenses for the solution through a third party.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Rather than going with any other solution, I choose to go with Hyper-V because of its very clear cost structure.

What other advice do I have?

I'm not sure if I'm the best person to suggest to you whether to use Hyper-V or not since I think it really depends on your situation. However, let's say we've known each other for ten years as colleagues and talking as friends, if cost is your main concern, then I would definitely recommend using Hyper-V. But if you're looking for high performance, I would recommend against it because it's not as good as other options like VMware.

Considering the performance-related issues of the solution, I rate this solution a six out of ten.

Has a tight integration with Azure
    Pros and Cons
    • "The initial setup of Hyper-V is far easier than VMware."
    • "Hyper-V could benefit with improvements to their management interface."

What is our primary use case?

We are partners with Microsoft. We install 50% of VMware and 50% the solution from Hyper-V, depending on the customer's request.

Mid-level businesses who want to create their own data center, and they are using other Microsoft systems.

    What is most valuable?

Hyper-V and VMware are similar. However, Hyper-V is less expensive. Hyper-V also has a tight integration with Azure. This means that you can have some VM on Azure and some VM on premises, and you can move a VM from Microsoft data center to a local data center on the customer's side.

    What needs improvement?

Hyper-V could benefit with improvements to their management interface. Also, there are some features that are better on other solutions. For example, VMware is easier to create 3D acceleration than on Hyper-V.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Hyper-V is quite stable. I do not have any issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The biggest cluster we have in the field is a node cluster.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Hyper-V is far easier than VMware. You can deploy the solution in a matter of hours.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Our customers consider other options, however for mid-level businesses who want to create their own data center, Hyper-V is easier and less expensive than using both VMware and Microsoft Windows server for VMware for Veeam.

VMware has some features that are better. It is easier to create 3D acceleration, however the licensing model is not good.

What other advice do I have?

    I would rate Hyper-V an 8 out of 10.

Has an easy setup process, but the performance speed needs improvement
    Pros and Cons
    • "The initial setup is easy."
    • "I encounter issues such as mouse cursor problems, dependencies, lagging, freezing, and unresponsiveness using Hyper-V."

What is our primary use case?

We use Hyper-V to test multiple virtual machines and servers to be deployed.

    What needs improvement?

The product performs a bit slowly compared to VMware.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

At the end of the day, Hyper-V is a Microsoft product. Thus, it provides better stability and is convenient to use.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I prefer using VMware more than Hyper-V. It is a convenient-to-use tool. I encounter issues such as mouse cursor problems, dependencies, lagging, freezing, and unresponsiveness using Hyper-V. These challenges led to a decision to migrate to VMware for virtualization.

    How was the initial setup?

    The initial setup is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is an inbuilt tool included in Windows Server. There is no cost associated with it if customers are already using Microsoft products.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Hyper-V a five out of ten.

    Low-maintenance solution with good capacity
    Pros and Cons
    • "Hyper-V's technical support is good - they're responsive and sort cases based on criticality and category, so they get dealt with quickly and by the correct team."
    • "We've had many issues with Hyper-V's stability, including resource crunches and memory leakage."

What is our primary use case?

    I use Hyper-V for virtualization.

For how long have I used the solution?

    I've been using Hyper-V since 2012.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We've had many issues with Hyper-V's stability, including resource crunches and memory leakage.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's straightforward to scale Hyper-V, but the automation isn't great. Hyper-V doesn't understand 80%/20%, so you need another technical resource to work on the coding voice, and we had to deploy a script for that.

How are customer service and support?

Hyper-V's technical support is good - they're responsive and sort cases based on criticality and category, so they get dealt with quickly and by the correct team. The only thing I didn't like was that we had to send them log collections from our data center to review.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Neutral

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward as the deployment was done through the SCVM Manager. This allows the user to create virtual machines without any need for IT support. Deployment is nothing but installing the operating system on one physical server, so it takes between an hour and a half and two hours, and altogether, the project takes a month to a month and a half.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Hyper-V is included in the Microsoft Azure license for no extra cost. However, they charge for technical support calls on an hourly basis.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Hyper-V to others because it has good capacity and requires little maintenance. I would give Hyper-V a rating of eight out of ten.

Easy to implements with familiar features and easy to expand
    Pros and Cons
    • "The implementation process is simple."
    • "Sometimes there's a bit of slowness in the VMs."

What is our primary use case?

We have a project for disaster recovery. We are using an arc server. We have to use the basic server, each biometric server, in the virtualization environment. In the virtualization environment, we are using Hyper-V. In the software, in the arc server, they get the image from the metal and put it into the Hyper-V environment.

    What is most valuable?

It is familiar. It's very comfortable with Windows. I can configure it easily, with no hassle. That's the main thing I have seen is that the licensing, when we talk about the standard version, they're giving the rule license for free. That is a good benefit for assembly companies.

We can use the solution for free when you want to try it out.

    The implementation process is simple.

    What needs improvement?

We haven't had any difficulties with the solution. We're happy with it.

Sometimes there's a bit of slowness in the VMs. The performance could be a bit better.

We'd like to see a bit more done with the migration capabilities.

The solution needs to offer better local or regional support.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've dealt with the solution for five or six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We'd like to see the performance improve a bit.

In our experience, for the most part, the solution is reliable. We haven't experienced any bugs or glitches.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are five people directly using the solution. I'm not personally using the solution on a daily basis.

It is scalable and easy to expand.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support has been a bit slow for us. Sometimes, due to regional time changes, there are issues. Therefore, when I raise a ticket for an issue, it takes time. We are in Sri Lanka, and there is no regional support here. We'd like them to have more regional support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We've also worked with VMware and Sangfor. The main difference is that the Hypervisor should be not at the OS level. It should be at the hardware level. That's the main thing Microsoft has to improve.

In VMware, we saw they have VMotion. In the Hypervisor, that feature is not there. We didn't manage to transfer some images, We would have to do it manually. It should be automatic. That would be added to Hyper-V.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward. It's not overly complex.

The deployment was quick. It took 15 to 20 minutes.

I'd rate the solution five out of five in terms of ease of setup.

We don't really need any maintenance to be done on the product. Once a month, Microsoft may provide us patches, and we tend to implement those, However, that's it. We put those in place to protect us from security issues.

    What about the implementation team?

We did have help in the sense that we searched the internet for assistance and answers to our questions. We did not engage with a vendor. We handled the setup ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'm not sure of the exact pricing of the solution. The cost may be a bit higher than VMware, however.

What other advice do I have?

    We are service integrators.

We are working with the latest update.

I'd advise that a potential new user should look into their requirements. It's difficult to change a product once it has been issued. You need to know what you want.

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
