IBM Spectrum Protect Implementation Team

Robert Hedblom - PeerSpot reviewer
Cloud and Solution Principal Architect at sumNERV Provider AB

We have automated the deployment process. So we deploy it in a few minutes. But if you're a first-timer setting up Spectrum Protects, you will say because you did wrong, then you have to redo it. It's because of talking from experience.

So what it takes a few days to get that properly set up a few hundred Protect servers. So, the deployment takes a few days.

Information Technology Infrastructure Manager at a financial services firm with 5,001-10,000 employees

I have been involved in deploying IBM Spectrum Protect. The process is generally straightforward. The solution is widely used by enterprise companies, and there is a robust community and a wealth of knowledge available.

Maintenance of IBM Spectrum Protect isn't particularly challenging, provided that proper sizing and performance planning are undertaken from the start.

Key to the smooth operation is maintaining a main business agreement for access to new releases, patch management, and security patches. Incidents or problems are rare, thanks to the system's stability and reliability. When issues do arise, we receive excellent support from IBM or our vendor and consultation support partner. Typically, we encounter such issues once every year or two, but they are resolved swiftly.

For deployment, one person is enough. A qualified and certified engineer has to do that because otherwise, we won't give the warranty. So, that person has to be a certified engineer.

We have customers who manage their own TSM servers, and we just come in to install it, or if there are any serious problems. We resell it as well as sell our managed services. They can back up to our servers. We have customers who have their own TSM servers, but we manage those for them. We manage the clients and servers. For some customers, we only manage servers, and they manage the clients.

We do A to Z for TSM basically. We are IBM's only business partner in our country. To our customers, we are basically IBM.

Deployment time can vary, it could take a day or a few days, contingent on the complexity. The process involves installing and configuring hardware, setting up the operating system, managing dependencies to Spectrum Protect, and then installing and configuring the Spectrum Protect service. The most challenging part is gathering all the necessary information for deployment, such as requirements from application teams and network details. Once you have all the needed information, the deployment becomes relatively straightforward. Around ten individuals are required for maintenance.

It was not a software deployment, but it went along with a strategic shift here. When we introduced Spectrum Protect, we introduced centralized backup service. So it was very little a matter of software deployment, but very much a matter of mentality and processes.

We used our own team to deploy, and have two staff to maintain the solution.

It is not very intuitive, and you can't do it all by yourself. You need someone for initial deployment. We have a seller who helps us out. This solution has been here with us for years, so our team is now comfortable implementing it, but it is still not that intuitive that you can do it all by yourself.

I did the deployment myself, but it would be very difficult to do it alone. I did it because I had enough time as a new employee 20 years ago; I took it on as a project.

However, in most organizations there won't be enough time to learn about IBM Spectrum Protect yourself. It would be better to do it with a deployment company that has more experience.

In my previous job, I handled the installation independently. However, we currently have support, as well as the central architecture and the manager sites. When it comes to the initial setup or an upgrade, we work in tandem with their support.

We definitely need certain people to maintain the solution. In respect of just storage, a backup engineering team can work with the IBM Spectrum Protect solution. The Windows team cannot make use of the solution, which poses a challenge for it.

Our clients tend to have an in-house team that at least do the daily check side of it, then back off the support to us. If they are having any problems, any errors coming up, or if the backups haven't run, etc., that is when they involve us. From a day-to-day point of view, we do not tend to be hands-on.

We usually had three people doing the deployment. The solution uses multiple integrators, for example, they integrated with Oracle, SAP HANA, Microsoft, and Bare Metal. You will normally need one senior deployer, and a senior analyst to deploy it. If the individual that is going to do the deployment is a high-level senior person, he can do it by himself depending on experience. If there is not a senior person, you are going to need more than one to assist.
