IBM Spectrum Protect Plus Initial Setup

Atif Najam - PeerSpot reviewer
Chief Information Officer and Program Lead at Gatron Industries Ltd

The initial setup was not easy, but it was not very difficult either. It took about 15 to 20 minutes to have it all up.

The initial setup is not as straightforward as that for other backup solutions, so I would rate it at five out of ten.

The product's initial setup phase was complex, but I am accustomed to it since I have ten years of experience with the product.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

The solution can be deployed in a couple of hours.

The initial setup was completed 15 years ago when I first started using the product and I found it to be complex. Now that I am skilled, I find setup much less complex.

I rate the solution's initial setup process a seven out of ten. It includes installing a variety of patches. Compared to VMware, it requires a lot of planning.

I sell the product, but we have client engagement with the customer during the project planning. This explains to the customer the scope of work and how much it will take. So, our implementation guy already creates this scope after discussing the customer requirements and understanding the customer infrastructure, or customer components, then they decide the scope of work. We have to execute the project plan to be ensure that the product is delivered and installed correctly.

If the customer is new, maybe the older version of Spectrum Protect was little bit complex because it did not have full gateway interface interaction. However, the newer version of Spectrum Protect is easier, and the customer is likely to see the gateway interface. It is much more user friendly.

We did not initially install and configure the Plus version. The initial setup was for IBM Spectrum Protect, and then we performed an upgrade to the Plus version.

The initial setup is complex, for a new installation, when somebody does it for the first time. It is not too hard when you have experience with it. Our deployment took approximately one day.

We downloaded the software from the vendor's website.

The initial setup was complex. Most of the work was done by an engineer from IBM. We really tried to follow the process so that we could understand it and troubleshoot if we encounter en error, but it was quite complex to follow. It is not a straightforward implementation.

The deployment took approximately two months, and there is a training period.

Initial setup of the solution requires expertise in configuration and installation, a person who has a connection to IBM or knows the product. This is not an out of the box solution. If it's not set up properly it's a nightmare to try and maintain down the line. Initial setup doesn't take a long time as long as the hardware specs are aligned but you have to know your environment and have a design. It requires planning.

The initial setup is straightforward if you follow the book. It only needs one person to deploy it and maintain it, with a maximum of two. Should one get sick, the other could take over.  We have a back-up team.

Our deployment was internally cloud-connected. At the moment, we are not using it as a public or private cloud. The deployment took less than a day because we had to wait on the VMware guys to build the OVA for us.

We started to deploy it more into existing VMware environments in our environment. We have deployed it in only two of our environments and we have another six to do.

The initial setup was quite straightforward and it was easy to actually set it up and start using it. The architecture is totally different from Spectrum Protect. I would like to see the commands and what's happening in the background, so it would nice to see a view of that.

The deployment was subject to the availability on the VMware side. We needed to go seek approvals and changes and things like that but the environment that I am currently using, I could deploy in a day.

Our experience with installations and deployment is that the installation is straightforward. It did not take more than an hour to install beside additional configurations and customizations required by the clients. The troubleshooting afterward may take more time, but usually, we can have everything in place in less than a day.
