Stable but not updated often enough and doesn't work with cloud infrastructure

Pros and Cons

  • "The initial setup can be pretty simple."
  • "Technical support is slow and sometimes they don't understand the issues at hand."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution as a central console a monitoring console for events - and not so much for the metrics collection and log collection.

What is most valuable?

The solution is very stable.

It's pretty easy to add devices.

The initial setup can be pretty simple.

What needs improvement?

The solution just isn't being updated enough.

IBM is not updating to make it possible to use cloud infrastructure.

The product is very late to the game and the new technology is hard. A simple example that you cannot do with Tivoli, is you cannot even delete a device. If, for example, we have a router or switch and the device is decommissioned, and we want to get rid of the device, you don't even have a button to delete the device by itself, meaning that you need to do it by stripping the database and so on. That's crazy. We don't have time to do that anymore. We need to go on and we need to have a faster solution.

Everybody knows that any device has got a life span, and we need to delete them from time to time. If we have 10,000 devices, someday those 10,000 devices will need to be deleted. We need the capabilities to delete devices as easily as we can add them.

The solution cannot scale well.

Technical support is slow and sometimes they don't understand the issues at hand.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've dealt with the solution for five or ten years at this point. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is great. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

With Tivoli, you cannot extend that much, meaning that you cannot add a server on HA, for example, however, perhaps we don't need it anymore as it's very stable. The thing is, if we want to patch it the way we need to patch a lot of time, it's not ideal. We need to reboot the server, meaning that when you reboot the server, you don't have access to anything. That's not so great. We just have one SNMP trap receiver. We tried to introduce more than one, however, that's not working so great. We need a mix of total solutions to make it work properly.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is crazy. It's not so good either. It is very, very slow. We are forced to start at the very junior engineers and after that, they take weeks and weeks and weeks before we get an engineer that understands what we said. We are very technical and they're not so much. The first and second level of the support is not so great. We're not quite satisfied with the level of support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are right now in the process of changing from Tivoli to Micro Focus. The reason why is that IBM is just not updating their Tivoli platform for our mid-year. They're very stable, however, they don't connect, for example, to new technology, like the Cloud -whether it's internal or external. They are very late on the technology. Even if they're stable, if we cannot connect the latest technology, we're doomed, and we cannot go further. That's why we're switching to Micro Focus - it's a little bit more modern. Even if the tool is old, they have the latest technology to connect to everything.

Micro Focus is more flexible, for sure. It's scalable also and we can add modules and we can put HA there. It's easier to make things work. It's faster. For sure, the learning curve is all the same, however, overall, we can do more with less work in Micro Focus.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is pretty simple if it's a couple of servers. On the performance side, it's okay. However, technology-wise, they are not there anymore. They presented their new product, however, the presentation was like a circus. It isn't a very serious approach with IBM, it's very strange that, nobody can explain anything about the new product and why they are so far off the mark.

For Tivoli, we have at least three to four people, however, the maintenance is low as the solution is quite stable. We just upgraded for a new security batch or stuff like that. We don't work so much on the device. For sure, we need to fix a lot of things around it as it's hard to delete devices. With the new tools, you can delete as you want. That's the new world.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I can't speak to the cost of the solution. I have no visibility on that.

What other advice do I have?

We are customers and end-users.

I'd rate the solution at a five out of ten. Sometimes it does the job, however, we're moving beyond it to more modern technology.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
