Informatica PowerCenter Initial Setup

YT
Developer, Architect at L'Oreal

The initial setup for Informatica PowerCenter is complex, especially if you don't have a lot of experience with the solution. The deployment could take one day to complete, but in more sophisticated environments, it could take a week, so it depends.

The solution is straightforward to install and configure. The duration of the deployment depends on the project. In some cases, it takes time to procure machines. Once we get the devices, developing the required environment takes another three to four days. In scenarios where we have to build the solution in labs, installation takes around six to seven hours. Also, it requires maintenance at a repository level.

We have found the initial setup to be very straightforward. I'd rate it eight out of ten in terms of ease of deployment.

The future migration to the cloud will be a long process, and we're expecting the migration from on-premises to the cloud to take about half a year.

The initial setup has a moderate level of difficulty.

If it is a simple first-time implementation, no one will face issues. However, when people keep upgrading from one version to another, there can be some compatibility issues. It all depends on how you write the code. For example, a few of the code migrations when we were upgrading did or did not work, and that's where we faced some challenges.

The product's initial setup phase is very easy.

I rate the initial setup phase a nine on a scale of one to ten, where one is a difficult setup process, and ten is a very easy setup phase.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

The product's deployment process in our company doesn't take much longer to be completed since it is an easy process to prepare the object to be deployed. The product can be deployed in a few hours.

The solution is easy to deploy and manage. I also usually help my customers to implement and configure the product. The time taken for the implementation process depends upon how big of an implementation process has to be carried out. So, for a single customer, it took around three days to deploy the solution. However, three months were required for the customization part. The solution gets deployed on-premises and on the private cloud.

I didn't handle the installation. I did practice installing on my workstation to practice, and it was easy. However, for the entire company, it was handled by a third party.

While it is on-premises right now, we have plans to move everything to the cloud in the short term. We are working on that right now.

It isn't complex. In the beginning, we have to test and try different parameters. Once that is complete, it is done for all the processes. If we have some trouble, we can call support, and most of the time, we can find people to help us in choosing the right parameters from different parameters.

The complete implementation—which includes doing the proof of concept, understanding how it works and what work has to be done, migrating all existing workflows—took over six months.

It's not a simple setup. It requires a bit of a learning curve, no doubt about it. For example, if you want an index, a three or four-year engineer would need to handle that. If you want to make them as a utility engineer, there is a learning curve involved.

It took us three to four months to deploy the solution.

We have 12 to 14 people working on the deployment and maintenance of the solution.

PowerCenter is very easy to install. I'm not sure about the cloud deployment, however.

The deployment and configuration might take about three hours.

If the environment is small, you only need one or two people for deployment and maintenance; however, if the environment is bigger, you likely will need more.

The solution is pretty straightforward to set up. It is not complex.

We got some training on the transformations and the ETL process itself; however, the implementation of the things was done by then. The strategy was to have teamwork on the building and accumulating data from the hospitals and then build a data warehouse around it.

The full deployment took two months for us. We had two engineers working on the implementation.

Our team handles the maintenance. One or two people are handling it. Other than running some interim tasks, everything is scheduled, and then some operational monitoring is required. Otherwise, there are no other maintenance jobs to worry about.

The setup was easy. However, the solution could have better documentation on basic steps or blocks that specify what to do. For example, a particular topic could be described at length in a video so people can understand it.

Installation is also relatively easy, but when we tried to include data warehousing, extraction or ETL functionality, we needed specific configurations and capacity. That is a pain point for users, developers and architects. However, it became easier after several periods.

It's easy for me to install Informatica. But for configuration and domain creation with multiple nodes, it will take time. If you have to do it multiple times, it'll take even more time.

For a simple installation, it's straightforward. Otherwise, it will take three to four hours for multiple nodes under multiple services. For example, if you're doing it for only an integration service, it's very simple. But for our data integration service and other services, it will take more time.
