Jira Stability

GH
Senior Principal Engineer at a consultancy with 1-10 employees

It is pretty stable. They've improved things over the years. Back in 2008, when we were starting to use it, different issues used to come up from time to time. It was still relatively stable. Now, I rarely run into a problem for which I can say that it is a problem with the tool, as opposed to user error.

The product is stable, and in terms of performance, it's really fast. The support team from Jira always informs users in advance, for example, if there is any scheduled maintenance or anything related to the performance tab. I believe Jira also creates maintenance schedules by considering the non-productive hours for each country. Hub fixes and new feature addition time are also planned by Jira for users.

That's mainly because a lot of people have standup meetings between 8 am to 9 am, and everybody is using Jira at that time. In almost two and a half years that I've worked here, Jira was down only a handful of times, and I don't think that was Atlassian's fault. Jira is pretty stable most of the time. However, we have an intranet on our side, and sometimes there are too many users. My company currently has four different departments at the top level. Each of the four departments has fewer than nine Jira users. My current department has approximately seven or eight users. So there are times when Jira goes down, and we find it difficult to log in. But we are trying to increase the capability of servers. Other than that, it's working fine.

Atlassian tools from the Atlassian suite are all linked together. We use GitLab. We wanted to integrate GitLab with Jira because whenever we create a branch in GitLab, for a repository, we create a branch to develop a feature or to fix a bug. Once the work is done, we have to merge that back into the master branch. When we do the merge, we name the merge and we enter a reference to a Jira issue.

It's easy after that. The person who's taking care of and viewing the merge requests can just click somewhere on a piece of information in the merge request, and it brings you to Jira, to the associated tasks. Usually, for each task, we end up creating a branch; it gets reviewed and merged back into the master. Once the review is done, it's ready to be tested.

That's our work procedure. Basically, the two tools — GitLab and Jira — need to be integrated with each other, but at the moment, there is a bug and It doesn't work. IT reported that problem to Jira or GitLab, but we have not heard back.

There is a problem when it comes to integrating Jira with other tools, or other tools with Jira, there seems to be a weakness there.

Sometimes, it seems that JIRA gets a little slow. But is is very hard to say if the network connection, the underlying system or JIRA itself is the one to blame.

Atlassian solutions for me are very good solutions. They are very interesting and very productive. As a user, it is necessary to have a unique portal to make traceability between sub-tasks related to code or programming. You can create and screen or implement a function or a class, related for example to the code that you are pushing in the repository or commit in the repository. If I open the sub-task, I will see the code related to the sub-task. It's very similar like Azure DevOps. Azure DevOps, however, has this functionality for traceability. This functionality will be amazing that Jira would implement something similar.

I prefer to use Azure DevOps instead of Jira for stability or the frequency of use. In my case, for example, I feel that more users, more companies don't think Azure DevOps makes a good choice due to the fact that the cost is higher than Jira.
