What do you think of SharePoint?

SharePoint has conquered the enterprise intranet. Although the conquest is never as bloody nor expensive as more invasive conquests, such as the Mongols under Genghis Khan, intranet citizens are not always thrilled by the new system and structure under Gates Khan. SharePoint is present in 80% of the Fortune 100; and plays a prominent intranet role in about 70% of knowledge worker intranets (either powering the main intranet portal, or delivering associated collaboration sites and/or document repositories). This in spite of its history. SharePoint 2007 was a dog; SharePoint 2010 was a dressed-up dog; but SharePoint 2013 represents a leap forward, and SharePoint 2016 and Office 365 represent considerable improvement into a a very usable, complex digital workplace solution. ...

What is most valuable?

Ease of use and the variety of plugins. Because it is such a well-known and popular product, there are a ton of development companies and users creating plugins and solutions for it, which makes it adaptable and easy for people who have fewer... more»

How has it helped my organization?

It allows us to manage our website internally, so we don't need to hire a costly web management service to do it for us. It also integrates with a ton of other services (analytics, forms, email lists, CRMs, etc.) that are key to getting the... more»

What needs improvement?

Because it's such a popular platform, it can have vulnerabilities that you want to be up to date on. Be sure to upgrade to the latest stable version, and make sure you have some security (e.g. iThemes) running on your site.

What is most valuable?

Its ability to style the article module is the most valuable feature. It gives the developer the flexibility to show the articles the way he/she wants.

How has it helped my organization?

When developing a site, it's important to have flexibility for displaying the contents the way you want. You do not have to depend on the default layouts that the theme provides. It improves the site's readability and sense of professionalism.

What needs improvement?

It has to improve the speed of the admin section. Sometimes you will get stuck while updating the configurations, especially because it uses AJAX in the interface.

What is most valuable?

This CMS is very easy to use and can be enhanced with various modifications (most of them are free).

How has it helped my organization?

I didn't use it for the companies I worked for, but installed it for many people I know. This CMS lets you create an own website within minutes, no matter if the user has knowledge in coding.

What needs improvement?

Joomla itself seems to be secure, but many add-ons are badly written and allow LFI, RFI, SQL injection and XSS attacks. You have to be very careful when it comes to choosing the right add-ons. I wrote an article once which described the... more»

What do you think of Sitecore Web Content Management System?

I feel a little bad giving Sitecore a 6/10, because I think the problems the organisation I worked for had with it were partially because of:  - shiny toy purchase - not fit for the org's purpose (more to do with the org) - UX and UI was poor meaning users didn't engage with it even after training However, some of the problems were because of Sitecore CMS - the upgrade paths were a horror. Yes, it was an old version but for us to get off of that old version we had to take three separate projects with each one incurring significant cost to the org. After toting it all up, including all of the support costs and licensing, it just wasn't worth it.  So, okay, we have some of the bad points but some of the good points are as follows:  - it's a CMS with the usual features...

What is most valuable?

* Constant bug fixes * Security patches * Flexibility to add plug-ins * Building plug-ins is easier than other CRMs such as Joomla * Can jump in quickly * Easy to use

How has it helped my organization?

I've been able to quickly build websites as needed.

What needs improvement?

Not really anything, but the plug-in interface into the system is not object-oriented. It's diffuse, and you feel like you're dropping bits into many places. They're called plug-ins, but you don't feel like you're plugging in your code, but... more»
