OpenText LoadRunner Professional Valuable Features

HelenSague - PeerSpot reviewer

LoadRunner is a very sophisticated tool, and I can use many languages. For example, I can use Java. I can use C++. I can test the Internet of Things, FTP, mail, and Active Directory. It is very useful.

I have a very good impression of LoadRunner. It is absolutely perfect. It is the best tool for not only performance testing but also for other things. Over the last 18 years, I do not remember any situation when I was not able to do something to solve my problem using LoadRunner. It is absolutely perfect and sophisticated.

We don't find any features lacking. One of the most beneficial points we have from LoadRunner is we start sizing our infrastructure accordingly. So what we do is when we deploy a new workload, we do performance testing.

We then do exercises to resize our infrastructure. So when architects, developers, and design engineers work together, they make a rough guesstimate of what infrastructure looks like for this scenario.

With LoadRunner, we can size it, so it also provides a cost benefit for us because when we do a theoretical analysis, we might oversize. We might have bigger instances of servers and RAM and CPU.

When we run it, we can do a two-sizing of our end; that helps save some cost. If it's undersized, we can increase the infrastructure aspect based on the load testing results.

In LoadRunner, the web protocol stands out as the strongest feature. It facilitates API testing and web load generation, and parameterization works exceptionally well.

We did not use TruClient for the load generation part. TruClient is a very heavy protocol, so it consumes a lot of memory and resources. Load generation cannot happen with TruClient protocols.

We would inject a few TruClient users with the load just to assess when the load is happening and what a TruClient is. Our use case was very different because we just wanted to know the user browser rendering time.

For us, it's not about how the users would use it for us, the use cases came from the UX designers. They would give us the requirement that if a page renders and you get a confirmation number, that is the last element to be loaded on the page.

The product offers good site performance under peak loads. We were launching these websites for the healthcare industry. Our response time from some of the pages was seven seconds, and these pages are very intense with all the medical equipment on the page. It came down to seven seconds, and then we were aiming to get to three seconds. So every time we would run the test, we would find issues. Sometimes, the page renders with a thousand rows of data, but you can paginate it so that the first page loads. The rest of it actually happens in the background, so it has drastically improved the performance of the pages.

There are not many products out in the market that support multi-protocol.

The scripting or programming that you do to run within either the on-premises or cloud environments are the same. They take the same types of programs that allow you to run the performance modeling operations you need to run.

There are various languages that they allow those programs to be written in, whether you want to use Java or something else.

Scaling is definitely one of the best features of this solution. There are no issues scaling to 10,000 or 20,000 concurrent users.

This tool gives you a lot of options. It gives you hyper correlation, etc., requiring much lower programming scans. It's very user-friendly.

Micro Focus LoadRunner Professional supports other tools and protocols, such as SAP, Citrix, web services, etc.

Analyses are more in-depth and more detailed, and slicing and dicing is very easy. You can pinpoint load APIs at any point in time. You can know what was happening at a specific minute with regard to your requests, headers, response time, exceptions, etc. It has great reporting capabilities.

The most valuable feature depends on what we're doing at the time. In the past, the greatest feature was the ability to record and play back to produce a script. Another great feature is that we can monitor the system. They also support many protocols for performing load testing.

I appreciate its ability to handle various internal calls and its user-friendly interface.

Compared to other tools I've used, it saves about 20-30% of time due to its flexibility.

I also use the TrueClient feature for browser-based testing. I found the TrueClient feature to be a bit difficult to use and not very user-friendly for automating scripts. So there's room for improvement in that area.

LoadRunner is one of the most versatile performance testing tools. One thing I really like about LoadRunner is its breadth of coverage. The number of protocols that it supports, and especially, for example, when it talks about SAP GUI-based performance testing. I could not think about any other tool other than LoadRunner. I've also seen LoadRunner evolve over a period of time, in the sense that it addresses new technologies. I would say it's still a very strong product and there's a lot of new products out there.

When you speak about its integration capabilities, especially when we talk about the latest version and not the older version that we had integrated with Dynatrace. So, we are integrating the current version with a tensor database and Grafana dashboards. So we can directly communicate it. The current version also integrates with DataDot, where whatever execution is there, we can collate results in DataDot itself and analyze the server-side metrics with that time duration so that everything is in one single place.

The kind of protocols that the current version supports is good since it's improved when compared to Version 12.55. I am very much happy with the tool and its process. The cost and the support lakhs a lot.

There are actually some cool features in LoadRunner where we can have multiple users at the same time. Some of the help features in the communities, what HP has are pretty good. We have quick turnaround time for the support as well, sometimes. It is helping our application to performance test and load test. I didn't use much of the tools, and have been using these tools since eight, nine years now, so I'm more into that. I see HP is constantly improving the features of the tool.

The breadth of protocol support means that you can get LoadRunner (and its sister product Performance Center) to test almost any application with useful built-in functions. The programmable scripts allow for the creation of sophisticated reliable and robust frameworks and scripts. The API potentially allows you to extend the tool to support applications that it cannot support, but how to do this is not well documented or supported.

The analysis capability is simply best of breed as it allows you to take data from any source and correlate it with your results. In other tools, analysis is more problematic and therefore a bit of a black art.
