MariaDB Previous Solutions
I have also used MySQL. When Oracle purchased MySQL, it was split into two options: the official version and the open source version. We started having a divergence in the updates, and then the open source version got left behind. We thought it was too caught up in a big enterprise and it wouldn't get the same attention. It was probably stifled because it was going to create competition for Oracle. We thought that maybe MariaDB was catching up fast, getting more features, and improving much faster than MySQL.

I worked with Oracle DB before. Currently, I am not working with Oracle DB. Oracle is much more secure, but it is also costlier.
With MariaDB, you have to be proactive. The security team and the design team need to be vigilant to ensure sufficient security measures. On the other hand, Oracle comes with security features included in the package, which is a major advantage.

We previously use Oracle and we switched to MariaDB because the licensing cost for Oracle was too much.
View full review »There was another solution in our company before MariaDB was introduced. My company moved to MariaDB as it was imposed or forced on us by the vendor named Appian since they prefer MariaDB for databases.
Though I still work with MariaDB, I have moved to Firebase and MySQL.
I have experience with some other tools in the past. The interface areas offered by other tools in the market are much better than the ones offered by MariaDB. The interface offered by MySQL databases is better than MariaDB's GUI.

We have used several databases like MySQL, Oracle, and NoSQL MongoDB. We have tried a number of solutions, so we have that experience.
We switched due to its features. It is a lightweight application, making it the best choice for our lightweight applications.
We did not previously use a different solution. We started with this product from scratch. We're still organizing our approaches to be more competitive.

We also use SQL Server Express, MySQL Fork, and SQLite.

When I compare MariaDB to Oracle, an industry leader, the big difference we found is performance in the PL/SQL mode. With Oracle, regular queries get executed at the same level with no issues. For ease of use and the setup, they're pretty similar. We also looked at IBM DB2 but there were compatibility issues and it was significantly slower.

I won't say we switched because we still have another system running PostgreSQL. We started using MariaDB because we were using some tools for identity federation, and these tools come with MariaDB by default. We did not choose MariaDB as a standalone product. If we stop using any of these tools tomorrow, we may no longer use MariaDB.

View full review »I had been using MySQL since version 3.x. of MariaDB. This made sense because it was a drop-in replacement. Concerning ColumnStore, we have been using a Column-oriented database for many years, especially Vertica and InfiniDB. We are a HPE Partner, but InfiniDB/ColumnStore is a valid replacement when customers cannot, or do not want, to pay the heavy license cost.

Oracle bought MySQL, and at the time they forked it, a whole bunch of people were like, "no, this is not nice." We read that saw what's in there ourselves, and that was our reason for switching to MariaDB from MySQL. It wasn't about who had better features because there's not much difference when you compare those two. But it's just a nicer energy and a nicer product.
