OpenText LoadRunner Professional Other Solutions Considered

I know that we are trying to use JMeter, but it is very limited. It is a Java-based tool. JMeter cannot handle a lot of cases the way LoadRunner can. For example, we are still using a lot of mainframes. We have very old Visual Basic applications written in the previous century. JMeter is modern and limited. It is Java-based and web-based.

I know that in Kansas City, they did an evaluation of Tricentis Neoload. They use Tricentis qTest for test cases, and Tricentis proposed to check out Tricentis Neoload.

LoadRunner was the chosen one among the products available in the market. We chose LoadRunner because it was the best at that time.

I have used other tools if our customer doesn't have the budget, including Jmeter, Silk Test, and many more. Sometimes we write programming to perform load tests ourselves. In terms of protocol support, LoadRunner is not much different than the other tools.

Once there was situation before StormRunner was out, where we did venture into a tool call. Here I was working for a retailer. We ventured in tool call with SOASTA. We were looking for a cloud-based performance testing solution, and at that time, HPE was not there. Every time I wanted to make a decision, LoadRunner was our default choice and we had nothing else running in contention.

Nowadays, most of the features supported by LoadRunner can be obtained in JMeter. Many development-driven tools like Locust are coming up in the market, which are easy to integrate with CI/CD tools. Dockerizing, containerization, and running the performance test through the CI/CD pipeline are pretty much easier with development-driven tools like Locust and Gatling.

LoadRunner and WebLOAD support a lot of protocols that other open-source tools are not able to support. However, most features supported by these tools are available in the latest tools. Correlation can be done within five to ten minutes in LoadRunner. Whereas, in JMeter, it would take half an hour. JMeter’s UI is simple compared to LoadRunner’s.

I have primarily used JMeter, which is open-source and free to use.

I have also used Silk Performer, although that was a long way back.

The suitability of one solution over another is very dependant on the use case. When it comes to performance testing, it is very specific to the use case. It depends on your goal and what you want to do.

We would evaluate all the tools on the market for a customer before making a recommendation. We do an evaluation based on the customers dynamics/culture, budget, and delivery methodology, and then offer our client a choice.

Other tools though don’t provide the breadth of support for different protocols and so this tool is limited to the applications it compatible with. It also has more basic reporting and analysis features. But then other tools are also generally cheaper.

At the time we started with Loadrunner, it was the leader in the market. Now, of course, we have options. However, back then we did not have any competitors to look at or compare to.

We evaluated JMeter and LoadRunner together to form the selection process. For some scenarios we can use LoadRunner for specification road testing, while for other types of testing we prefer JMeter.

There is Neotys NeoLoad and SOASTA CloudTest, but LoadRunner is the best.

At that time it was Silk Performer vs. LoadRunner, and Silk Performer was not optimal enough in terms of its features. We were having a lot of issues trying to create our scripts using Silk Performer and latched upon LoadRunner. We found out that LoadRunner has got a lot more features than Silk Performer and was able to cover the tasks.

There are various things we haven't been able to test so we're continuously looking at other vendors to complement it. NeoLoad being one, recently. That's it really.

Yes, because our clients wanted us to consider other solutions, and that's fair enough. You cannot be biased just on one tool, so yes, we did propose some open source tools as well some licensed tools as well, along with LoadRunner.

Other solutions considered:

  • Cecilia, which is primarily a research installation tool, but it also has performance ability.
  • JMeter, on the open source front
  • LoadUI, from SmartBear
  • IBM Green Hat
  • Parasoft
