OpenText LoadRunner Enterprise Scalability

Its scalability is fantastic. We have no issues. We can increase the number of load generators, and we can increase the number of tests that we are doing on a day-to-day basis, so everything is good.

It's 100% scalable without any problems.

In terms of usability and volume, everything is satisfactory. However, the licensing cost becomes an issue beyond a certain number of users, as licenses become expensive.

Pay-per-user licensing limits the tool's use, although scalability and volume handling are otherwise excellent.

The products do scale. We have some very big customers. Where we begin to struggle with scalability is generally not within the OpenText purview. The bottlenecks we see when we do large bits of work are in the database or in the network because we are just trying to throw some new requests. It does scale, but we just have to scale sensibly rather than just throw more infrastructure at it. Sometimes, you are not solving the right problem. For example, if a customer wants to create three million business workspaces in six months, I ask them how many they need on day one, or which ones would they work with on day one. We load that set first. We then ask them which is their last set, and they say that they have records for people who are no longer account holders, so they want them available, but their account execs and phone guys are not going to be looking at those on day one, day ten, or day twenty. We then move them last, so we break the problem down, and then we look at the tooling that is there. The good thing and also the bad thing is that there is always more than one way to solve a problem. There are tools. There are REST APIs, and there are prebuilt solutions. We need to work out exactly which is the right approach and the right tool to do it. This is where people at OpenText and other customers come in because you can just ask the question about what you want to do. If someone has done it before, they can give you some input to try this or that or look out for this because they bumped into this. You get that kind of community help and support. You certainly get help from OpenText support as well.

The solution can scale. We've been using it for most users and have been increasing our servers - and they have LoadRunner installed on them. We are expanding usage. However, the cost may be a deciding factor.

We have six people using it in our company.

We struggle a lot with the tool's scalability. When we start using hundreds of load generators and generating tons of data, we find a lot of difficulty in managing the systems. We are wondering what we can do to deal with scaling out the infrastructure as it continues to grow within Costco. The product's scalability must be improved. For our use case, the tool's scalability is a five out of ten.

It takes time to build skills around Micro Focus LoadRunner Enterprise. Also, a person who knows LoadRunner can work on any other tool since that person will know the basic concept of performance testing. There are a lot of users in my company who are using the solution, and if I were to give a count of the users, then it would be in the thousands. Presently, there is an increase in the usage of the solution and the number of users using the solution. Also, I don't have an idea of how the solution is being used by other teams which operate in other countries.

Scalability-wise, it has to improve in certain protocols. If you take Ajax TruClient, the memory consumption was very huge in the terms of the particular protocol. That needs to be somewhere where we can minimize the memory consumption to have more virtual users run on the system.

People need to buy too many load generators to run their tests. Even for file users, we need a lot of load generators to run that.

We have seven to eight team members using the solution right now.

We have been using it for the past 10 years with the same client. We have all the version upgrades happening from LoadRunner ALM products onwards. We went into the ALM Enterprise. And we were the people who raised hundreds of bugs in the Ajax TruClient protocol.

The current licensing model is something that offers us flexibility, compared to what we had earlier. That's something which is really beneficial.

Any plans to increase our usage of LoadRunner depend on the business demand. Our company depends on a number of IT applications for which implementation is planned and are in scope for performance testing. We will carve out a plan for introducing performance testing of them.

Penetration and performance testing have increased over time and we are growing well. For applications that are already in the maintenance phase, depending on the volume of change that is introduced into them and how critical they are, we introduce performance testing. However, the number of custom applications is quite limited within our company.

Scalability-wise, I have not had any problems. It's gone as high as I needed it to go. There are issues when supporting two to three thousand users. I don't ever go any higher than that.

A typical test is between roughly 150 and 250 users, and the most I've ever gotten is 3000. The scalability has been there for what I needed it to do. I really can't speak outside of that realm.

This product is easy to scale and as a user, we have not encountered any such issues. Over time, if I have to add more machines to monitor, or if I have to add more machines to use during a load test, it's pretty straightforward.

If I compare it with other tools, I would say that it does not scale as well. However, as a user, it is okay and I've never faced any issues with adding more machines.

For OpenText LoadRunner, it's just my team, so about five people in our organization.

I'd rate the scalability a six out of ten. The main reason is that it's a very expensive application. Other companies might not be able to afford it.

For example, if we need to test an application with 10,000 concurrent users, the license can cost a lot of money. That's where OpenText tools shoot themselves in the foot compared to other tools. Because of the price, many companies, like one I used to work for, decided not to renew their licenses and switched to open-source testing tools.

Even though they might not get the same value, it's a cost they're willing to bear. So, the challenge to scaling up is the price.

The scalability is good enough. Sometimes we get a message from the generators that they are at 80% or more capacity. That is an error we get quite commonly. We only have eight gigabytes on the generators and it is recommended to use 16 gigabytes. I guess that is likely the reason why we have this problem. This happens a lot more often when we are running TruClient. The 80% capacity error comes up very fast in that case. We can not run many users with TruClient at all.

The nature of Performance Center is scalable, so you have the application server and then, when you need to have more generators to generate more load, you spin those up pretty quickly. You can use cloud-based generators as well, so that's a huge plus.

Both the scalability and stability are strong points for LoadRunner. We have no complaints so far. Of course, there's always this concern around if we have sufficient use on the hardware to create the required scale for the number of users, but I think that's easy to workaround. This is what enterprise users do; we don't really have that much of a complaint there.

The solution is scalable, and it's based on the number of licenses you have. In comparison, with BlazeMeter, I ran thousands of users, because it's very cheap and we could scale up the number of users easily with very little overhead.

In my experience, I've used BlazeMeter to scale up to 5,000 users. With OpenText, there are not more than 2,000 users.

It's an enterprise type tool. It scales very well. Again, it's not the product that we have issue with scaling.

We have challenges with the number of VMs that we have. The issue with scaling up is we come up against our infrastructure team that wants to limit the number of VMs. They have to manage them. The whole VM-type design seems to be a lot more VMs, and when you need to scale up, it's even more VMs. I understand the cost savings with VMs but in terms of management, if you don't have that nailed down in terms of automation and all that monitoring, it's a challenge to scale up.

I think that's where our current Performance Center implementation is probably going to remain, but if we're going to scale up, we're really looking toward something with StormRunner, where we can scale up as we need and not have to worry about the whole managing of the infrastructure, cause that's a challenge.
