Provides great container data flow and status related paginated reports
Pros and Cons
  • "Provides good data flow related to the container and control flow."
  • "There are some connector-related issues in their MSBA solution."

What is our primary use case?

One of our primary use cases is to build an MSBA-based business intelligence solution for  collection agents, so that they can receive daily information relating to bills in the form of ledgers. I've built several packages to import the data from where it has been dumped. I then created the data mask for data analysis to showcase all the outputs and conclusions. As a result, there is a clear breakdown of total collections, the different parameters, customer-based information, and other essential information. We are partners of Microsoft BI and I'm a solutions architect.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has helped increase the client's total sales revenue for their collection agent. It's basically MSBA, plus an AIML kind of solution and it helps the client to increase the overall efficiency of their collection agents, increasing total revenue for the company.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the data flow related to the container and the control flow. Microsoft has recently introduced paginated reports in the status part. These are web-based and also mobile-based, depending upon the layout of the report. It can be easily printed in Word format as well as in layout format, regardless of size.

What needs improvement?

There are some connector-related issues in their MSBA solution and there are certain features that Microsoft should include in the MSBA solution. One is the connective level problem that we currently face from the different data sources. It provides about 80% connectivity to all the data sources, but there is the remaining 20%. They could provide some kind of additional functionality which would make it a great solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for about 18 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is pretty stable in its current form, and we are working on the same platform to optimize and incorporate everything.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is fully configurable and totally scalable. We are currently expanding the solution to include the area collections managers, the territory collection managers, and the regional collection managers. There are currently close to 3,000 users who are field collection agents. There is a maintenance cost but it's pretty low because it's an on-premise solution, so there is no cost attached to the server-based maintenance. Our support team is responsible for maintenance.

The solution is currently used throughout the company although there are geographical restrictions. They plan to extend usage to a pan-country level. It will take some time to implement but we are at the end stages of deployment on the pan-country level. Once completed, we expect there will be around 15,000 users.

How are customer service and support?

We provide technical support as required by our clients. Urgent issues can be resolved within two or three hours.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Microsoft BI is similar to Talent and Pentaho BI but Microsoft is more competitive and flexible over the other BI solutions. We can cover up or build our end-to-end solution from scratch and that includes reporting and we don't need to go to any kind of a visualization tool for that.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was complex because the data vault was not totally structured and we needed to create some kind of a data lake, dump the data, then analyze it and create the data mask. We require certain validations and checks before importing or exporting the data as well as the application of the cubes to SSRS before reporting services. Deployment time can be dependent on the server and we have designed the system to optimize the process. We have a deployment team which can include two to three developers. Deployment takes about 10 minutes. The client decides on the deployment plan because they have applications that hang on the production server and don't want deployment to hamper other applications.

What was our ROI?

Microsoft BI is provided as a BI solution to incorporate or implement all data in a single platform. It enables you to build a data mart for your company and analyze it on a single platform. Even data analysis techniques can be carried out on this platform, and output of data can be visualized from the SSRS reporting tool. In this solution, the ROI is quite high because collection has increased up to 25% in one month compared to the same month last year.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have used a client-based service in the pricing. As yet, there are no additional costs.

What other advice do I have?

For anyone interested in building a BI solution from scratch, it's important to be aware that the data is not taken at a single platform. I believe that Microsoft BI is the best platform for this because it gives the flexibility to store the data into an SQL Server from different sources, and the ability to first dump your data into those servers. The analysis and reporting is in the same platform. Power BI has a much greater range than SSRS. Microsoft BI is a tool that gives it to you on a single platform, and you can build an end-to-end BI solution. This is not possible in Power BI.

This solution gives me the total flexibility to use my skill set, in the technical forms and in the analysis form, in one go. I can do several things on a single platform regarding the data science, as well as the data analysis, pulling information, analyzing data, transforming data, creating data lakes, data warehouse, and data masks, all in a single platform.

I rate this solution a nine out of 10.

Good reports, dashboards, and visualizations, but needs more report outputs and better documentation
Pros and Cons
  • "Reports, dashboards, and visualizations are most valuable."
  • "It should have more report outputs. They should expand the report outputs. Its documentation should also be better."

What is our primary use case?

It is used for data visualization and analytics. We have its latest version.

How has it helped my organization?

It has provided better and deeper analytics for our data. It has also been helpful for custom visualizations as per client requirements.

What is most valuable?

Reports, dashboards, and visualizations are most valuable.

What needs improvement?

It should have more report outputs. They should expand the report outputs.

Its documentation should also be better.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is fairly stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable based on licensing. You would need premium and additional organizational licenses. Mostly everyone in the organization uses this feature. We have around 4,000 users of this solution in our organization, which includes a lot of project management people.

We don't have any plans to increase the usage in the future. We are currently content with its usage.

How are customer service and technical support?

They exceed expectations and provide good quality support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had other solutions, but they were some form of ad hoc databases and spreadsheets. We switched to this solution for integrating various data sets from different data sources and for richer analytics.

How was the initial setup?

It was straightforward. It took two weeks.

What about the implementation team?

It was an in-house job. For its maintenance, we probably have a staff of about 20 people.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Microsoft BI a seven out of ten. It is a really well-developed product, but it has some room for improvement.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Extremely responsive and helpful support, easy report modeling, and supports connections with multiple data sources
Pros and Cons
  • "It is good for us for onboarding the data. We can connect to multiple data sources, do transformations to make the data usable, and then model it within the transformation. Someone who has come from a Microsoft Excel environment will easily be able to use this solution. Power query and report modeling are easy to understand in this solution. Their technical support is very good. They are extremely responsive, helpful, and hands-on."
  • "The visual outlet or the visualization aspect can be improved because the settings piece is quite problematic. It requires a lot of time to set the visuals and check. It is quite fiddly to change all the settings and font sizes. It just needs better ability in terms of using templates or visualization templates to get the vision. Our users always benchmark based on the product, and they don't appreciate everything under the bonnet. The only rating is based on the actual reports in the settings for the dashboard. They should make it look a bit funky and a bit more aesthetically pleasing on the eye. It is quite a fiddly tool, but other than that, it is pretty slick. Because it is community-driven, the marketplace tends to be changing forever. You get the standard visualizations, and you've also got all other marketplace visualizations that require you to spend a bit more money and purchase things in the marketplace. With certain visualizations, there is no longevity. I had used certain visualizations, but they discontinued them, and I had to rebuild my reports, which is obviously very frustrating. There should be some sort of stabilization around how the marketplace visuals impact the users when they expire."

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for about two and a half years. We use Power BI Premium, and we have its latest version.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable once you've got your ducks in a row. We live in a world of fast-paced data. The business I am working in is dealing with a lot of unstructured data, so it has to go through the data onboarding transformation piece. It is more scalable if it connects to a data warehouse, but connecting to an Excel spreadsheet or unstructured data requires enormous amounts of investment. I have seen some other tools that are more data wrangling tools, so you don't want to blur your line. You need to stick to what you're good at. Is it data visualization and modeling, or is it data transformation? They're trying to diversify and make the tool all-encompassing, but we're now having to use a different tool for data transformation or data wrangling. We then just connect it to a data warehouse, and it becomes a really slick and scalable tool.

How are customer service and technical support?

They are very good. They are extremely responsive and helpful. They arrange a call quite quickly, and they actually get on the call and help you and do troubleshooting with you. They are not sending you to the Q&A page. They are quite hands-on in terms of support. So, I am really happy with their support.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to just make sure that whatever you're going to deploy can be scaled out. You should get your data modeling in place first.

I would recommend this solution. They have so many releases every month, which is quite cool. They are keeping on top of it, and it is not like you have to wait six months for a release. I'm still trying to keep up with the releases of the last four or five months.

I would rate Power BI a nine out of ten.

Good user interface, good technical support, and has the ability to scale
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's initial setup isn't too complicated."
  • "The integration with other solutions could be improved for reporting aspects."

What is our primary use case?

We have a few projects. We're using the solution primarily to develop a modern sitemap.

What is most valuable?

The product has a very defined, well-prescribed format to it. It's easy for everyone to use for the most part.

The training is pretty good. It's well-described so that users can navigate the solution easily and follow the correct steps to initiate tasks effectively.

The user interface is pretty good.

The technical support on offer is excellent.

We've found the scalability to be quite good.

The solution's initial setup isn't too complicated.

What needs improvement?

I need more time with the solution. Right now, I can't think of any features that are missing from the product.

The integration with other solutions could be improved for reporting aspects. There are some reporting features in Tableau that we need access to and it would be ideal if there was a function between the two for data integration and data manipulation, with the final representation of the report available on Tableau.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for a year or more at this point. It hasn't been too long.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

So far, the solution has been largely stable. However, I'm still exploring the solution and testing it against my requirements. The stability hasn't quite been proven fully just yet.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is pretty scalable. It meets all of my client's requirements. I'm able to make changes and expand if I need to. It's pretty simple to scale it out as necessary.

We deal, for the most part, with medium-sized companies. We don't really deal with smaller organizations or bigger enterprises.

How are customer service and technical support?

I'm extremely satisfied with technical support. It's been excellent so far. They are responsive and knowledgeable and I always get my questions answered in a timely manner. I have no complaints about their level of service.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've also worked with Tableau and SAP products. We use them all currently.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex in any way. It's quite straightforward. It was installed quite easily onto our system. We didn't run into any issues in that sense.

What other advice do I have?

I'm using the calculator version of the solution.

We use both the cloud and on-premises deployment models.

We are Microsoft partners. We're not just users.

Overall, I would recommend the solution. We do have other plans to use other BI solutions, however, we haven't really focused on that just yet. So far, this product has met our needs pretty well.

On a scale from one to ten, I'd rate the solution at a nine. We've largely been happy with the product and its offering.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Good visualization, automatic charts, and drill-down capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "The drill-down capabilities and automatic charts are the best ones. The visualization is also very good. In terms of visualization, no competing product, such as IBM Cognos or any other product, has the same capabilities."
  • "Microsoft BI comes under pressure when there is a lot of data to be crunched. It gets slower and slower, and the functionality becomes a bit of a problem. The performance goes down with data being fed into the system. The infrastructure requirement also increases if you have to increase the performance. This is the area that can be improved in my opinion. Initially, the product is good, but over the years, when data gets accumulated, it becomes a problem unless the old data is kind of archived and is no longer shown on the visualization. It has a feature by using which a user can query for a report through simple questions to a bot. So, if I want to look for the customer share of revenue by geography, I just simply state that in the chatbot. If I wanted it in a pie chart, then you say, "Please show it to me in a pie chart." It comes out well for basic charts. This feature should be improvised more so that people can very quickly get customized reports on the go."

What is our primary use case?

I take care of business transformations in the company, which includes solution transformation, and so on. We have a range of products that are legacy products. They are fairly old. We are substituting them with new age products, and one of them is Power BI. We are using its latest version currently.

What is most valuable?

The drill-down capabilities and automatic charts are the best ones. The visualization is also very good. In terms of visualization, no competing product, such as IBM Cognos or any other product, has the same capabilities.

What needs improvement?

Microsoft BI comes under pressure when there is a lot of data to be crunched.

This feature should be improvised more so that people can very quickly get customized reports on the go.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for a couple of years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is good. The only issue is the performance that degrades when more data comes in, but when it comes to scalability within a particular level of data, it is really good.

How are customer service and technical support?

I don't know. I am not technically so much involved in the day-to-day side of this.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is a process by itself, so we have to take external help in terms of implementation. In terms of various reports and other things, I don't have an idea about the complexity of the implementation because we took expert advice, and an external consultant implemented it for us. I would guess that it is a bit extensive and needs a lot of work to be usable.

What other advice do I have?

I would definitely recommend Power BI for those entities that are not complex. Unless and until there is a very high volume to be handled, I believe Microsoft Power BI is the best solution to go for, particularly when somebody buys a stack of Microsoft products, which includes Office, SharePoint, and so on. The whole Microsoft Office Suite is a brilliant product in its entirety, and there is good and easy integration with SharePoint, etc. This is a nice feature that other products don't have. There is a stack of IBM as well, but it is not as good as Microsoft.

I would rate Microsoft BI an eight out of ten. I am pretty happy with this solution, and the two points are down because of the performance issue and probably the cost.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

Works very well for updating indicator boards, and for quick visualizations in demos
Pros and Cons
  • "The uploading of information is very easy, as you just use an Excel sheet to start work right away and obtain the benefits of Power BI."
  • "I would like to see the product offer more graphics to impact different audiences."

What is our primary use case?

We use this for data analysis and the creation of indicators. It is one of the most powerful tools for BI in my experience. It works very fast, is intuitive, and useful. You just drag and drop, as soon as you download it.

How has it helped my organization?

This solution works very well for updating indicator boards, and for quick visualizations in demos. You can present results in many ways to improve the presentation.

I have used it on a variety of applications where it is important to show analysis and present information in a graphical perspective, and also to modify and present information to developers and executives.

What is most valuable?

One of the features I really like is that there are a lot of different graphics that are very nicely presented. The uploading of information is very easy, as you just use an Excel sheet to start work right away and obtain the benefits of Power BI.

When you start, right from the beginning it can help you. Once you upload the data you can start to play with the different options you have from the graphics available, and also from the different mathematical and logical conversions that it offers.

I also work with other data processors and the facilities that Power BI offer can help to better understand the traditional database tools such as SQL, or others.

Another advantage is that you don't have to have a lot of knowledge about databases. This is because you use Power BI knowing your goal and what you want to achieve with respect to the data that you are processing.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see the product offer more graphics to impact different audiences. Also, I would like more ease in connecting with the different database drives.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

This is different from other solutions in that Power BI offers ease of use. It is different from any SQL tool because you can use it right away.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you are looking for free tools to process data in different ways for an easy to medium analysis then you have the free version available. However, if you want a complex analysis from multiple sources of data then you should look for the charge and support version.

In my opinion, both options are good.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I evaluated some other tools but I think they had very different objectives. Power BI looked more generic and has an easy and quick way to present the information in different forms.

What other advice do I have?

It is important to say that the information cannot be confidential or secret. This is because the platform processes all data from the Microsoft cloud and you have to be certain of the security issues that someone could face if a security breach happens.

I very much recommend the free trial mode.

Despite vague error messages, some functions were cut down from 90 seconds to about less than one second

What is most valuable?

  • SQL Server Integration Services
  • SQL Server Management Studio

How has it helped my organization?

There have been occasions when a certain application would work very slowly on other DB platforms and once we migrated to SQL Server the response times improved dramatically. For example, I recently migrated an application from TeraData to SQL Server and the response times for some functions were cut down from 90 seconds to about less than 1 second! This obviously speeds up the work that gets done within a day.

What needs improvement?

The SQL Server Reporting Services can certainly use some more help. Within SSIS, I see room for more connectors and easier debug messages that would speed up the process of development. The biggest hurdle that any developer comes across is vague error messages.

For how long have I used the solution?

About eight to nine years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No. The installation and deployment process has always been smooth and simple.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No. Product is very robust and reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Adding extra machines to the cluster environment is not difficult but certainly needs experienced developers/implementers to do that.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Excellent. They usually turn around within good time and you can also request new features directly from the group that is responsible for the product.

Technical Support:

9/10

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

A different solution was not used previously.

How was the initial setup?

I have been to many projects and usually the setup is pretty straight forward. But even when it comes to complicated setups such as multiple clusters, the product still seems easy once understood.

What about the implementation team?

In-house implementation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It varies from place to place. But a typical license would cost anywhere from a few thousand bucks to the upper $20k-$30k range.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

  • MicroStrategy
  • TeraData
  • Informatica.

What other advice do I have?

Look at the amount of data that you have and the amount you anticipate in the future. If you have multiple sources of data and multiple applications consuming it, sticking to a single solution might not be the best idea.

We have been using Microsoft Power BI for about a year and a half.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable. It works perfectly, and we haven’t encountered any issues working with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable product. We have around 100 Microsoft Power BI users in our organization. We are expecting growth in the number of users.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have worked with SAP BusinessObjects. Power BI is better because it has more flexibility and functionalities.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Microsoft Power BI a nine out of ten. I recommend it to users who want to pursue a career in data engineering. It will be very helpful and provides a lot of guides on the Internet, especially on YouTube. They can gain knowledge about its advantages and disadvantages.
