Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Room for Improvement

The configuration packages can be somewhat tiresome at times, and they can be slow when loading data. However, I have discovered a way to increase their speed by reducing the number of columns included in the imported data. Perhaps Microsoft could enhance its configuration packages in this regard.

Sometimes, we may require customizations to address specific cases, such as the absence of budget control in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. Not having a point-of-sale application or a retail interface within Business Central can be a significant limitation, especially for companies dealing with retail operations. In such instances, it becomes necessary to seek alternative solutions or integrations.

I think that the solution should be made to have more than just training or documentation on how to use the system. It should be made easier for a user to learn about the platform or ERP.

I hope to take training on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. I am searching to learn about ERP. Actually, I am searching for this information on the internet, and it is very complicated to find any information. There is a book for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central explaining how to use it. But it is not easy to use, and it is not easy to learn.

One aspect that could be improved in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is the visibility and accessibility of communication-related features, such as email integration. Currently, users may need help displaying email transaction trails within the platform, which could hinder their ability to manage communication data efficiently. While APIs are available for such integration, the lack of a seamless and visible display within Business Central presents a limitation.

There is a lot of improvement needed in the top model, such as better integration with logistics, quality management, and data modeling for all revenue types. The revenue resources could be improved by having one common table with revenues. Furthermore, I have found when it comes to customization of the solution, I have had to do some modifications in areas to cover our requirements this has been the case with my colleagues and other companies as well.

In the future, there could be a better connection to Microsoft CRM and the field service area within this solution needs improvement. Microsoft Dataverse is a program where you can exchange data between the two solutions and there needs to be better integrated.

I think Microsoft should improve on the process of how the user decides on a business workflow. For example, there may be some kind of drag-and-drop interface that lets us decide for ourselves how to develop the business workflows that fit our purpose.

But it's not just about the interface. We often deal with multilevel workflows, depending on the department or the person in charge, and there isn't enough flexibility in the way we need to make certain adjustments. Our workaround has been to perform some custom development alongside Dynamics NAV to enable us to refine the workflows.

Partly because of the pricing structure of Dynamics NAV, we have a plan to migrate to Dynamics 365 Business Central, essentially moving it into the cloud version. If we compare Dynamics 365 Business Central to other competitors like SAP or NetSuite, the price is not too high and not too low. However, for our own brand I think Dynamics NAV is good enough for us right now.

Project Consultant ( Scale Up) at a tech vendor with 501-1,000 employees

One of the main areas my clients had concerns with was the reporting function of Microsoft Dynamics NAV, and it probably depends on what level of licensing clients have. These are not complex users, and I'm not talking about millions of cases or tickets. This is a very limited number of users who felt that reporting is one of the areas for improvement in the solution.

Each department has gone and bought tools independently, and there's no interdepartmental communication, so another pain point is integrating Microsoft Dynamics NAV with other tools. There are so many systems running, so it's not entirely the fault of Microsoft Dynamics NAV why some customers are moving. It could be because prior business decisions were different from what they are now.

Another pain point or area for improvement was that any request that had come from the website had to go through an e-form which was then plugged into Microsoft Dynamics NAV. There was no direct data capture. That was the pain point, where clients had to build e-forms, and that caused delays in transactions and getting information. I'm unsure if the design was incorrect, so I'm unable to comment on it, but that is one of the pain points or areas for improvement in Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV could be improved in terms of exporting income statements and balance sheets. Currently, there is a feature, but you can only have the last three years. I spent some time trying to improve the KPI portion that exports the data, that already calculates the sub forms or subtotals, but they weren't able to break that up into different dimensions. They've now managed to crowd the separate table and you can export that, but it's only for the last three years. So, they could improve this solution by getting the chart of accounts or the account schedules to be exported, where you can go further than just three years with it.

Some people might be disappointed to find that NAV isn't a turnkey solution. It's just a framework for you to build on. It has been challenging to get some of our more peculiar business practices to work in the system.

And if Microsoft made some of the security setups a little easier to work with, that would be a significant improvement. The warehouse management features could also use some work. We had to buy third-party software to make NAV's warehouse management and security more usable and functional.

We're actively looking at migrating to Business Central by the end of the year. This is due to the fact that support for the solution would have ended. MS Business Central is Microsoft's replacement to MS NAV which would reached it's end of life this year.

It would be nice if the integration process was much easier.

I don't see any reason why Microsoft can't use a standard Microsoft development environment  to develop it. It makes it hard for my development team to create additional module using another development language C/side

The solution is not best suited for larger-scale businesses. The features are lacking, there could be more add ons available. There are some other areas that are lacking but there are separate solutions for those other areas not covered in this solution. For example, field services and CRM are in Dynamic 365 and there is no BI feature but there a separate application for that called Power BI.

I would like to see some project related feature in upcoming releases of the application. Some companies are professional service companies and they can also be project-based. Having some projects features would be helpful. If they are not including manufacturing, then at least they can add features for project-based companies.

Because the platform is open, the ERP is open. Sometimes we have to do a few customizations for improving our internal processes which we do that as we go along, we've got all the GDPR things in there. It covers a lot of the aspects that we need to manage. An improvement would be the customizations that we do tend to limit by adapting our processes to the software. I'd say we'd be adapting around 60-70% and customizations would be around 30%. We don't want to diverge a lot from the standard version.

We have to deal with a lot of audit issues coming from various places which is a time-consuming process. Auditors like to see who has got permissions for this and that. That's a bit of a hassle to get it out, but we do it. It's not the functional side that's an issue.

I'd like to see the ability to address certain queries simplified. Not operational queries, but business issue queries, from the perspective of somebody who's managing the software.

Dynamics AX and Dynamics NAV Projects at a tech vendor with 1,001-5,000 employees
  • Inter-company functionality: Relatively shallow and mostly manual
  • Alerts: Many customers are required to define system generated alerts. These are based on data changes and due dates by the user as personalization. This function does not exist.
  • One has to send the inter-company document to the outbox, process the outbox at the receiving company, process the inbox, and then create the document. This process is somewhat long and requires several steps.
  • The system does not support the synchronizing of modifications and bi-directional updates.
  • The most significant issue is the lack of the inter-company logistic functionality. It is not possible to send/receive shipping documents, serial numbers, and lot numbers.
  • Users require the ability to define alert rules that will trigger the receipt of alerts from the system if the alert condition is met. For example, if a customer's balance exceeds USD10,000, then send me a notification. The "big brother" Dynamics AX, does have this functionality, and it is very useful.

Customization and costs could be improved. Customization is a little complex, so we don't do that. We just use the basic features provided there. We also don't have a theme to customize it as it costs a lot.

In terms of what I see from the IT department, it would help if we could create an application within Dynamics NAV itself, like a dashboard, which we could customize ourselves.

It'll also help if they had documentation to help with API programming. I have a hard time finding the documentation about it. We need to drill down through the output and input of the structures they gave us, and I can't find a detailed explanation of the objects and properties.

MCT-NAV Freelancer at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees

Setup security needs to be simpler. It needs to be more user friendly for consultants or users to set up. Currently, performing this task requires deep knowledge about tables, forms, pages, and reporting. It is a hard task for consultants to determine the security (roles for user, which module / table can be access by user).

In version 2016, the workflow for approval systems such as the workflow for credit limit approval and purchase order approval still has bugs.

Currently beside basic setup, as user need to define each table, form, pages, etc, and it will takes lot of time and required deep knowledge to perform that action.

It will be great if NAV can provide a common role setup group for instance : Approval Role (purchase and sales), accessing specific master data ( item, COA, Vendor,Customer). another solution is : nav provide a tools to record when user access specific form, page including table behind

“In the standard NAV application is it a very time-consuming and challenging task to assign the right roles to the right users due to the many different roles available “

So my comment , the product should provide the tool to make easier.

In the standard NAV application is it a very time-consuming and challenging task to assign the right roles to the right users due to the many different roles available. NAV Easy Security simplifies this process by allowing you to create groups of roles and companies and assign these to users.

The security and user levels fields can be improved further so that it is not too tedious for end-user to map and set up.

The permission and roles settings of each individual user is there, but still very tedious. The fact that the application is extremely flexible also means that if security is not properly set up, a user can accidentally be given access to something that he should not have access to. For example, he might be given access to financial figures on the general ledger through another function because the navigational feature is so great.
