MikroTik Routers and Switches Initial Setup

Akram Zaki Hussein - PeerSpot reviewer

The initial setup was somewhat complex. The interface is not user-friendly; navigating through it is challenging due to the complexity of various settings and options. I would rate it four out of ten.

The initial setup was straightforward.

WinBooks, the customized model application, has already been successfully deployed and is considered effective.

Deploying it from your machine was straightforward because you simply connected to the network, had all the necessary network parameters, and then proceeded with the deployment.

The setup process is simple because MikroTik routers have two setup facilities: console mode and graphical mode. It can be set up very easily using graphical mode. It also provides real-time data on how much data is passing through each port, and it offers redundancy if we have multiple internet connections.

Our team is quite familiar with MikroTik with this many years of experience, so there is no such issue in terms of setup. But I would strongly recommend that MikroTik improves the quality of your power sources because there are a lot of cases which I have seen malfunctioning MikroTik in case of power fluctuations. Also, I think MikroTik needs to focus on some local support partners.

We are an ISP. So when we provide the connectivity to any MSME client, maybe a 20 MBPS or whatever. So we select an appropriate model to be deployed, which is pretty fine. Based on the availability, we put that model on their premises, and we connect it to our network. We also configure everything for them, and if they have another service provider, we also help them to configure that as well. There are cases where we have even had a customer configure their BGP as well. For those who have their own AS number, we have helped them to configure their BGP. Also, we have to integrate it all together.

Regarding the staff members to do the deployment and configuration, we have a kind of centralized thing. So if any help is required, we have some experts sitting at our place, and they can help since we already have around more than ten centers spread across the country. We are operating in four different states of this country. So anybody can call a NOC engineer and get it configured.

Regarding the time taken for deployment, it is almost a PnP technology, so it takes hardly ten minutes to configure. The best part, as I said, is the GUI of MikroTik.

Regarding the maintenance part, sometimes it gives some erratic behavior. That's the very key function. So we are unable to deploy it as our core router. I can give you an example where we have an augmentation point in Equinix in Mumbai. All our thirteen centers are connecting to Mumbai first. And from there, we have a couple of upstreams. So, we have three IX connectivities and a few PNIs. We have direct PNI with Google, Facebook, and a few others. However, in the aforementioned areas, we are still skeptical. Our entire team is skeptical about deploying the MikroTik as our core router because we need something more robust and more predictable. MikroTik has not been able to give that kind of confidence to our team even though we have been using it for the last fifteen years.

The initial setup is straightforward. The deployment process depends on multiple factors. For example, if I need to choose a backup location outside or inside the town, or a different location altogether, and I want to have a protected link such as IPSec or any of these solutions, then we can configure the MikroTik Router according to that specific goal.

I found MikroTik Routers and Switches very easy to set up; plus, you'll find many resources on how to do it on the internet.

After purchase, deploying MikroTik Routers and Switches only took one day.

My company went through the tender process for purchasing MikroTik Routers and Switches and had a contract with the ISP vendor who took the fiber optic line to the office. It was the same day that the company received and set up the Mikrotik devices.

The setup is quite user-friendly, easy to configure, and easy to troubleshoot.

The deployment process is very easy since you just need to buy the box from the market and deploy the solution in your network. Also, the user interface is very friendly. The solution's configuration, troubleshooting, and establishment of services are all easy. Though I can do the deployment of the solution myself, it is better to consult a senior team member.

For the deployment and maintenance of the solution at the company where I am working, there are four people on the technical team. Our senior manager is a person handling four teams.

The solution is very easy to implement. It's not overly complex.

I'd rate the setup five out of five in terms of ease of setup.

The maintenance isn't too difficult. If we get new customers, we may need to do some reconfiguration. Maintenance depends on incoming projects or requests from clients.

The initial setup is complex and you need to have a deep understanding in order to deploy it. The time it takes to deploy will depend on what you're configuring, in terms of what technologies. Typically, if it's just for connectivity, in usually 20 to 30 minutes you should be able to get MikroTik up and running. But, if it's compliance and other things then it may take a while longer.

The initial setup is not easy. It took one hour to set up. You cannot set up the product remotely. You have to go to the location. Some ports might be closed. You have to set up the product at the location first and then make some rules to get the connection. After that, you must set up the security, which takes time.

We need two or three technical staff members to deploy and maintain the product. Sometimes more. One administrator, one engineer, and one or two developers.

You need to learn how to use the software and run MikroTik Router OS or Switch OS. You have to be familiar with all these. If you're a network person, it's very easy for you to set it up. It is pretty much similar to setting up HPE, Juniper, Cisco, or NETGEAR. It's not for novice users. There's a learning curve.

Our team has to get trained and certified in MikroTik.

The initial setup is more complex than Ubiquiti since it's more full-featured. It's up to you how you want to do things. You have to face a slight learning curve. You have to have a background in networking or routing.

Currently, if I have to do a deployment for a simple office, it would be less than a day to have everything up and running.

For our organization, when I started using it, it took maybe a month or two to get used to the features before I migrated fully to the device.

I'm the one who is responsible for the network and therefore I handle any maintenance as well.

The product's setup is straightforward. You have to setup the network diagrams first, then define the links, VLAN, and the ports where VLAN is setup. The final stage is deployment. Deployment does not take more than 15 minutes. However, there will be deployment issues if you don't use firewalls or define an interface. You just need an engineer to do the deployment.

I am currently only using it as an access point. It takes two to three minutes to arrange it, which isn't much.

If you read the manual and the documentation carefully, and also research the Wiki support sites, the setup can be quite straightforward.

The length of time for deployment depends on the type of scenario and what you want to do.

To have a working solution it can take weeks. You have to test all of the limits because if you don't know your limits then you don't know your product area. For example, can a device be placed when serving a 1G internet? Knowing the limits and testing the limits is a time-consuming activity. It can take one to two weeks depending on what you are testing.
