A good tool for learning about networked databases

Pros and Cons

  • "This product is a good teaching tool for students who want to learn about networked databases."
  • "The documentation is pretty weak and should be improved."

What is our primary use case?

I use MySQL to teach students about databases. They implement projects using this product.

How has it helped my organization?

MySQL is lacking some of the features that you find in a commercial product, but it is sufficient for basic functions.

What is most valuable?

This product is a good teaching tool for students who want to learn about networked databases.

What needs improvement?

The documentation is pretty weak and should be improved.

The GUI for PHP MySQL Admin can be improved because it is not very flexible and sometimes difficult to use.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using MySQL for more than five years.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with other full-scale databases, such as PostgreSQL. For use cases where I need full functionality, I would use another product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I am using the Community Edition, which is available free of charge.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Small application for easy deployment but has Java compatibility issues

What is our primary use case?

What needs improvement?

There are some issues with compatibility with Java environments that need to be improved. When Oracle bought this solution there were some driver changes that caused some issues with operations.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for approximately eight years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are approximately 300 users using the solution in my organization.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is a small application and is very easy to deploy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is a license for this solution. A lot of the time the solution gets…

Easy to use, scalable, and quick installation

What is our primary use case?

I started an Azure account and this is when I tried testing different databases, non-relational databases, and relational databases, using this solution.

What is most valuable?

The solution is easy to use.

What needs improvement?

There should be more tools to manage the on-premises version and more automation features.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is able to be scaled but it depends on your Microsoft configuration. I would recommend this solution for small businesses.

How was the initial setup?

The installation was fast, it took approximately five minutes.

What about the implementation team?

I did the deployment of the solution myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Supports JSON, but some of the queries are slow in the upgraded version

What is our primary use case?

We are basically using it for our applications.

What is most valuable?

I like the JSON stuff.

What needs improvement?

Since we upgraded from 8.0.12 to 8.0.22, it has had some slowness-related issues. Some of the queries that were fast previously are quite slow now. I did some research, and I found many people complaining about it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with this for two and a half years, and they have been using it for 10 to 15 years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We are using a cluster now, but I don't administrate that. There are thousands of users.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate it a seven out of 10.
