Nakivo Overview

Nakivo is the #6 ranked solution in our list of top Disaster Recovery Software. It is most often compared to Veeam Backup & Replication: Nakivo vs Veeam Backup & Replication

What is Nakivo?

NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides image-based, application-aware, and forever-incremental backup for VMware, Hyper-V, and AWS EC2 VMs. This means that NAKIVO Backup & Replication can capture all VM data, ensure the  consistency of applications and databases (such as Exchange, Active Directory, MS SQL, SharePoint) running in VMs, and transfer only changes to the backup repository. NAKIVO Backup & Replication uses native change tracking technologies (VMware CBT/Hyper-V RCT) to instantly identify changed data. For each VM backup, you can save up to 1,000 recovery points and rotate them on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.

The quick and easy setup of the ready-made virtual appliance made it simple to deploy

What is our primary use case?

I have a small environment with two hosts since most of our services are running in the cloud. We are a cautious group and we keep a copy of our files on-premise, as well as in the cloud. We are using NAKIVO for backing up our file storage and virtual machines.

Pros and Cons

  • "Perfect for someone who doesn't want to waste time."
  • "It is missing the file and folder backup; however, this product is meant for virtual machine backup and recovery, so that is really outside of the scope of the software."

What other advice do I have?

The product is a time saver and makes complex tasks easy to handle. A must-have for beginners and one-person teams.

Has dropped down backup storage capacity on our systems

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for the backup of several virtual machines. We have deployed it for several customers, as it's a fantastic and cheap backup solution.

Pros and Cons

  • "We spend less time to get data recovered."
  • "An improvement would be to include a general data backup solution that is not only for virtual machines."

What other advice do I have?

This is a great solution. They are doing it well.

Pros and Cons

  • "Creating a backup task in NAKIVO is fast and easy."
  • "I think it is important to work not only in replicating the virtual machines in Amazon AWS, but in other cloud systems."

What other advice do I have?

My only advice is to try it.

Easy to configure and the policy-based replication suits our environment well

What is our primary use case?

We have a VMware environment that needed backup and replication. We run NAKIVO on a Synology NAS and replicate to another VMware Server.

Pros and Cons

  • "This solution was surprisingly easy to configure."
  • "An improvement would be to give us more control over the email alerts, with different emails going to different addresses based on a set of rules."

We use this product for host servers that need to back up offsite to Amazon AWS. We use it with Hyper-V servers.

Instantly recovers entire VMs, individual files, or application objects, but integrations should be added

What is our primary use case?

My company wants to evaluate Nakivo to offer a primary backup solution to our customers because it looks easy to implement and to use.

Its ability to work with various data store repositories is nice

What is our primary use case?

Nakivo does the job it advertises that it does. Its ability to work with various data store repositories is nice.

How has it helped my organization?

We are able to take backups on a regular interval and restore data/VMs as we choose making the process work as advertised.

What is most valuable?

The ability to restore in a catastrophic event is priceless, since every company must use a backup solution of some sort.

What needs improvement?

UI could use some upgrades. The UI is basic, but functional. The upgrade process is a bit dated and could use some changes.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

How is customer service and technical support?

The support is good.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

There…

We have been able to set up a failover site that has replicas of our critical VMs

What is our primary use case?

We are testing and using Nakivo as a backup and replication solution for our VMware environment.

Pros and Cons

  • "The ability to create a replica of all virtual machines is a great feature."
  • "We have been able to set up a failover site that has replicas of our critical VMs."
  • "You can have it setup and running within a few minutes."
  • "It would be great if the product could be expanded to support other virtual technologies."

Four times the reduction in cost of our vSphere backups, though lacks direct integration with common backup storage arrays

What other advice do I have?

If hardware or software specific integrations are important for your business, this is probably not the best fit. The software is likely the best fit for small to medium business which does not need all the advanced features of competitors' software.
