NetApp SnapMirror Initial Setup

The initial setup is easy and can be done by reading the manual. If it is not possible by in-house employees, NetApp's technical support is available and it is quite easy to follow.

It is deployed on-premises and takes almost a few hours. Once you deploy it, it depends on the network speed. Once the data is transferred, only then the process can be rated as a success. The maintenance requires only one administrator. I rate the initial setup an eight out of ten.

Deployment was very smooth and took around two weeks. Following that, we carried out our data migration which took time. We previously used a Windows file independent server with its own local disk and Windows OS. It's not compatible with NetApp so data had to be physically migrated. We also took extra time integrating with our antivirus software and configuring external tape libraries with NetApp. We had one staff member involved in the deployment and an engineer from our partners. We have close to 900 users. The solution requires routine tasks as opposed to maintenance. We have three or four people with access to this storage.

The deployment is straightforward because SnapMirror is embedded in the software of the NetApp storage arrays. SnapMirror specifically takes a couple of minutes to install. It takes a little more time to deploy and configure the entire storage array, including the SnapMirror functionality.

The initial setup was not complex. The configuration itself takes about one or two hours. But if there are ports that need to be opened on the customer's end, that can add some time.

The initial setup is very easy from a technical perspective. There's no deployment. It's a feature of NetApp. You just need to add the license key.

No maintenance is needed.

The initial setup of racking, wiring, assigning shelves, IP addressing, and even array and aggregate creation is fairly simple. As you integrate systems and data onto the storage solution it can get a bit complex I think. I am so used to it now it is like second nature but I can see it being complicated for some who are not used to a particular solution or vendor. Examples of complexity could be implementing high availability, fiber channel, iSCSI, NFS, LUNs, flash cache, snap schedules, permissions, Qtrees, Quotas, NDMP, CIFS, etc. all on the same production filers.

The initial setup was quite straightforward. One has to implement one hardware system on two sites and then implement the functionality to mirror between the two sites. It doesn't take very long. So one has to implement and get the one site up and running first, and then implement the second site and get that up and running too. Then one can do the metering between them.

The initial setup is a little difficult. The installation was straightforward using a system integrator. If a customer is not buying the installation on top of the services, it means that they already know what they're going to do, what needs to be done and have read the documentation. In this case, if the person installing it has read at least one document about configuring SnapMirror, it's just straightforward.  The best preparation is to download the virtual NetApp, install it on Notebook or somewhere else and follow the steps.

Previous earlier versions of the solution had quite complex setups. Now, you can perform the cluster peer SQL replication or from the GUI so it's become quite easy and quite quick. Once you have stated the replication volume, etc., and the clusters are aligned, it takes a minute to implement. Of course, that's once your network requirements are specified.
